Many of the films I make are focused on indigenous traditions around hunting, fishing and gathering for food, medicine or products. My ethnographic approach brings viewers into the lives of people sharing things they value most. I've made many films in the Iñupiaq language, working collaboratively with Elders who speak their language fluently and who want to be part of preserving endangered languages. I also help to bridge communication between scientists and remote community members so that every voice is heard and considered in research projects.

Thank you for documenting this important information!
Très intéressant, merci pour ce partage !
Great documentary Sarah. Looking forward to more in Northwest Alaska!
It's sad that you have to drill so far into youtube to find such high quality information.
Thank you for your comment. I believe this is the translation for anyone needing to read it in English: "In Alaska and Brazil, the reality of Climate Change with the destruction of natural ecosystems is already an increasingly dramatic reality. And, truth be told, big corporations and top global leaders don't care about ecology, nature, the environment and climate change." I agree, it sure seems this is true.
This is an awesome documentary, thank you for sharing!
Well done! It is apparent it is important to build and maintain a positive relationship with Indigenous communities, value ancestral and Elders' knowledge, and work with institutional scientists to gain a broad knowledge our of communities.
Great job to my Pops Bobby, brother Vince and Uncle Ross! Finally got to see what the heck you guys have been up to these past few years! 😂 Very informative, I hope this opens many eyes to the current state we are in regarding our beautiful home and planet.
What an awesome job explaining climate change! Love the video! I loved seeing my uncles Ross and Bob sharing their knowledge! Great job everyone!
Don’t let the skills disappear. The best way is always the native ways.
So nice!
Thank you! Cheers!
If you guys can stop talking and let us hear the fiddle dancing on the floor we would be happy
Hell how do I get into something like this?
I love the video! I was wondering where to get the supplies to make this?
After 13,000 views, it’s hard to believe I’m the first one to give you a thumbs up! Thank you for sharing this very informative video. Nice job editing, too!
Thanks for the video! That looks like a great workshop!
Amazing! It is such an honour to be able to watch you all transform something so primitive into such a beautiful work of art! 👏🏼🙌🏼🙏🏼 much respect and love from Southern Ontario. ❤️ Elders are such a gift to have ❤️
Very interesting to see and watch... mikelle newyork mom learning new skills during this chaotic challenging times ....
Sorry I missed the conrerence. but thank you grandma's so much for my experience and your loving patience teaching. Ron
Interesting that they’re using pop up buoys like that to submerge the buoys so marine traffic doesn’t run it over and so that people don’t find It and mess with the tripod. Sometimes with crab pots we’ll attach zincs that submerge the buoy so that people can’t steal the pots and the zincs will dissolve within a certain timeframe. We also mark the location of the buoy with GPS coordinates. Amazing the temperatures were so hot wildWhile they were working on the tripod. Climate change is hitting the Arctic hard.
Utterly fascinating! I understand their use of the pop up buoy, which probably is to hold the buoy below the surface so boat traffic doesn’t run over it and so no one can find the tripod and mess with it. We use zincs on crab pots that hold the buoy underwater for timed periods so people don’t steal the pots, and we mark them with gps coordinates. Interesting that the weather was so warm when they were working on the buoy. Climate change it hitting the arctic hard.
I don't think I've ever seen dance fans replaced as gloves.
Great video !
Wow! Priceless is the knowledge of the Elders!
Maybe three anchor points on that pole ?
Thank you and ill Rember how to make and have fun
Great 😊👍👍
Can you make me a pair please size 8 fringes alot on the side.
lovely video
Thank you
way better than my Nike boots :) well done.
Where I can find/buy original hand-made mukluks/dolgan shoes...? :)
Ana bassee.
Great job. Is the seal skin naturaly waterproof. I have a steer rawhide and wondered how that might work. No seals around here. Some moose but we can't hunt them yet. That's great that your keeping the heritage alive. I would be more socialable if there were things like that to do. Looked like great fun.
Yes seal skin is waterproof

Wow,is there more? Want to see one start to finish. As native from AZ, cold weather boots are pretty much used for 2 or 3 months a year.
Awesome!!!
I just love when native elders tell their stories back in the day 🥰
Hooray!! Beautiful! So glad some of the young ones are learning from the Grandmothers. Makes me happy to see. Thank you!
Very interesting and useful -- thank you! Fellow viewers: please *NEVER EVER* peel bark from a live tree. ONLY gather bark from the ground or from a fallen / dead tree. QUESTION - what kind of root did you use?
I wish I can learn from and with those elders, from start of making the makluks and to the ending or the finish makluks
This was a very enjoyable video to watch !! It was great to see that the young are still interested and want to learn from the elders !! I am glad to see that you will keep the old ways alive !!! They are important !!! Well done girl well done !!!
I wish I could learn some of these incredible traditional ways.
Thank you, this was very interesting. I wish you could show the whole procedure to make mukluk, including the waterproof stitches.
I heard REDWING, thank you always my fav.
Love this.
wow ,is this ever interesting ...it would be a crying shame to lose this knowledge...thanks for sharing...Doug (sask)
How beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing. God Bless
It's a shame, these techniques are being lost to time. Yes, labor intensive but isn't that the point of hand making something?
So nice to see some young people interested enough in their heritage to learn this ancient art form keeping it alive for another generation.
Do you have a video of how to do the upper part?
