HEDS Episode #3 Knowing Lines
Knowing Lines demonstrates the fundamentals of the major lines designers use in hand engraving. It goes into an in depth presentation of the characteristics of straight lines, arcs, curves and the wonderful beauty line. This episode is the third, made especially for designers, in a very lengthy series, Hand Engraving Design Simplified. Designers are encouraged to study the episodes in numerical order, as each builds upon the previous. This series builds from the basis that interested learners know absolutely nothing about design and leads and encourages into complete design capabilities and confidence. Following episodes will be published, as they are completed. They are very extensive and require great attention to thorough content and accurate detail. Please watch for the new UA-cam publications.

Uncle, you are an amazing artist. Thank you for sharing your talent with the world and teaching others how to have patience with themselves. I ❤you. -Tonya
1: draw sketch large size 2: scan and reduce artwork to size in photoshop then invert image (make background black) 3: print onto silicone transfer paper using a LASER PRINTER ONLY!!!!! 4: iron on to clean steel (or workpiece) 5: after cooled, peel off. 6: etch for no more than 5 SECONDS in ferric chloride Image is permanantly on workpiece.
Why not use an inexpensive laser machine to put the pattern to the metal? Easier said than done, I guess.
Very interesting idea. Would work on a flat surface. Would require multi-axis control for curved surfaces. Thanks for the comment and the new area of thought. Good job. Worth researching.
A high end gun manufacturer who offers very high end engraving on their products is now offering engraving done by lasers. The laser option is way less expensive. Hand engravers need not worry because the difference between the two is very obvious. The laser work looks like it was done by a laser and not by hand.@@bbennett8772
Brother I do hope you keep making these videos. Sounds like you know what you're talking about, so you have yourself a student
thank you very much this is very helpful. Full video. I really like your video
Is there a link to purchase paper transfers?
I apologize for my delay in responding. Please note: This transfer paper works in ink jet printers, not laser printers. Link: www.amazon.com/Grafix-Adhesive-2-Inch-11-Inch-6-Pack/dp/B000S15KDS?th=1 Thank you. I'm pleased this is helping you. Best wishes for achieving your dream. Bill
Thank you Bill - This sounds like a monumental undertaking and I look forward to seeing what you come up with!
You're very welcome, and thanks back to you, too, Raphael. You should have the Introduction, Episode #1 available within a day or two. All the video aides and narratives are completed for the others, excepting a couple, which are almost done. I sure hope you will find them valuable. My best to you, always.
I'm a beginner and this is very helpful. I hope there is some sort of drawing various kinds of leaves and their folds, like kentunk step by step
Thank you very much. I am pleased it is helping you. Right now I am working on a new video to be out soon. It is Ron teaching the drawing of a fundamental leaf structure I believe you will like. Also, I am preparing a series "Hand Engraving Design Simplified". It can help you. too. Also, when first beginning, it is great study to get pictures of differing leaf styles that you are interested in from the internet or books. Enlarge the pictures, if you can, to make the leaf structures easy to see. Then, use tracing paper and pencil to trace over each of the lines. Pay good attention to the beauty of each line, and, especially how all the lines relate to each other. Do this until you can draw an exact copy without tracing. I always wish you great success in reaching your dreams, Bill
@@bbennett8772 this will be fun for beginners like me. I have activated all your Chanel notifications. I don't want to be left behind. the shape of the leaves and the variations in the folds are sometimes confusing. waiting for your video friend.
@@bbennett8772 I know hobbies cost a lot. I know there are actually scroll drawing books like Grifin's in pdf file form. But I already spent my money to buy an air graver and some of my tools you made yourself. I can't even afford to buy a fake mini vise from Alexpres. But I don't know, I'm so crazy about this art
@@mulanjamilah7849 Thank you, again, Mulan. You are exactly right. In the beginning it all can be confusing. That's why we need to start simply. Study simple lines first. Then, study how two lines harmonize together. Then, add more lines to the structure. Make each line harmonize with the overall structure. Sounds complicated, I know. But, just start simply. Then, grow. It will all come together. Just don't give up on your vision. :)
That's fantastic that you have an air graver. Power assist sure cuts down on the learning curve. You are on the right track. Also, it's great that you are "crazy" about this art form. "Crazy" means you are very passionate. Keep your passion, always. You are going to do super.
Amazing artistry
Thank you, Phil. You have made the start of my day super. I am working on a series "Design Simplified". I hope you will get to benefit from it. And thanks greatly for subscribing. My best to you, always, Bill
I was Army for 9 years before I left for Australia to teach. I grew up hunting on our 164 acre all wooded property, we had a lot of deer and deer hunting was a big family issue. I was an Army Sniper in Vietnam and after getting back state side I got into black powder guns and "Turkey" shoot competitions. One guy from Pontiac Michigan has this beautiful engraved flint lock so i asked him who did the work. Seems it was a local gun smith in Pontiac ... sadly that was in 1971, but back then as a father day's gift I got his lever action 30-30 Winchester rifle totally hand engraved .... his work was magic and it so made my father's day ... I actually got him to engrave the primary cover on my WWII military Indian Scout motorcycle, that I changed back to stock. I miss those days, as personally I used to pin stripe everything from boats, horse drawn carriages, hot rods, trucks and motorcycles. Even the odd reverse image gold leaf, with chip glass.... I have NEVER seen a guy work magic like this old fart.... a quick drawing, I said do what ever you think would work...
Thank you for sharing. You are having many good, memorable experiences. I wish you many more. Take care, Bill
awesome video thank you!!
You are very welcome. I am sure happy that you liked it. Have a great day, Bill
Thank you kindly for sharing. I enjoyed this and was delighted to see his perspective on the letter S for I have done my S the same and not the historical way for reasons he explained. Cheers to both of respectfully Paul
Hello Paul, Ron and I are very pleased that you appreciated this content. Yes, the S has a special peculiarity. Glad you reached the same conclusion. Wishing your dreams come true, Sincerely, Bill
I have used just the white Dykem and drawn my design directly on it. Works very well as a drawing surface. And have not experienced skid problems with any graver because of it.
That sure works well, I know. You are right. Nick Francolini showed me that, if you add some talcum powder to the Dykem White, it will add more "tooth" to the drawing surface. It holds the graphite better. I use it always, too. Thank you for your comment, Jac. Best wishes with all your engraving. Bill
Glad to see this. Thanks for posting.
Hello Charles, Thank you very much. We truly hope the information is valuable to you. If you haven't found Ron's other videos, yet, there currently 5 more. You may find them on my channel "bbennett8772". Best wishes, always, Bill
Thank you, very helpful, god bless 🙏
Hello Silvermani, You are very welcome. Ron and I are extremely pleased that these help you. I thank you for your blessing. I believe the Creator will continue guiding and protecting you and all your loved ones. Bill
Wonderful 😊thank you very much 🙏
Although some points of disagreement can be brought in, regarding few aspects of lettering instruction of Mr Smith, by far this is exceptionally beneficial presentation of high quality, bar none. It is particularly of most valuable as the lettering, monograms etc is presented by a master engraver with experience of actual applicability of this teaching, which is based upon his experience in cutting lettering. Much appreciated, regardless of the videos' vintage, for golden rules such as viewed are ageless. Thank you.
Thank you, Ali. I will relay this to Ron. We both surely always hoped these videos would be of value to other engravers. You comments are our ultimate reward, and make it all worthwhile. We wish you the greatest success in all your endeavors. Bill
Hello Ali, Thank you for all your positive energy. Ron is not on the internet, so, I am mailing him a copy of your compliment. We both are thankful that Ron's teachings can be helpful to others in the fulfillment of their dreams. It is wonderful that it is helping you. I send good energy back to you that all yours dreams do come true. Bill
I've bought all the same material and followed this tutorial to the T. I still can't seem to get the ink to transfer at all. I must be doing something wrong. How hard are you burnishing and for how long?
@BBennet oh also, I'm practicing on brass. Could that be the issue?
@@jeremywhite7976 Hi Jeremy, I understand that you could have problems. It took me several weeks (not full time) to get it to work. I placed the method onto THE ENGRAVER'S CAFE Forum. Here is the link: engraverscafe.com/threads/engraving-transfer-technique.27432/ In this forum page please see my comments on March 25, 2022. This has an ATTACHMENT in which I go to great length to describe each step. I think this could help you. From what you describe to me I would suspect that you are not getting enough moisture from you breath exhale onto the hair spray layer and/or not not closing the film with the ink quickly enough to trap the moisture before it can evaporate. Please let me know, if you can get it to work. If you still have problems, we may need to talk, personally. Feel free to let me know. Best wishes, Bill
@@bbennett8772 Thanks for the quick and informative reply! I'll check out the link!
Brass will be just fine. Make sure it is clean, though.
Please let me know, if you got the technique to work for you. Thanks, Bill
Thank you for sharing
You are very welcome. We hope the information will be valuable to you. Thanks, Bill
It’s nice seeing others way of transfers
Does this work on transferring to metals such as gold, platinum, and silver?
Hello Brian. This technique should work equally well on precious metals. I am using it on a sterling project right now. It is working great. Good luck.....
