The bit with the swimming T-Rex actually aged quite well since we now know that the animal was an able bodied swimmer. It probably didn’t hunt in the water though

My top five books in the series 1- Rakkety Tam. 2- Redwall ( the original book). 3- Pearls of Lutra. 4- Salamandastron. 5- Martin the Warrior. Reasons 1- Gulo is a unique villain since unlike most of the previous ones , he’s more or less a monsters who only wants power in the gruesome way possible 2- while not the most consistent book , it’s a good start to the series and has a memorable cast ( the only forgettable ones are minor characters) 3- a good book with a great redemption arc for a fun character 4- possibly the best book to feature multiple storylines that tie together nicely 5- Great book with a strong arc for a legendary figure in the series

Interesting ranking! I agree with pretty much all your assessments of the books. I'm partial to the Redwall books leaning into the more monstrous villains. Thanks for sharing!

"Doomwhyte" & "Loamhedhge" are two of my least-favorite books, and it really comes down to 1 factor in each. For "Doomwhyte," it's the Gonffellins. I liked the Gentleman Thief Gonff in "Mossflower," but trying to build a whole society out of his archetype is not only awkward, it's just bad. They style themselves as thieves, and are proud of it, yet they're offended when someone accuses them of stealing? As for "Loamhedge," the repetition of the journey taken in "Mattimeo" already made me less invested, but I hated the reveal of "you could've walked the whole time if you just tried!" On a more positive note, I love "The Long Patrol." I enjoyed the dynamic of the curmudgeon Russa being a guardian for naive and starry-eyed Tammo, and for Tammo's journey to becoming a seasoned hare of the titular group. I also appreciate the books emphasis on the weight of sacrifice. The Patrol they encounter is full of fun & interesting characters as well. I'm happy to see "Pearls of Lutra" & "Marlfox" get some recognition! I personally feel "Pearls" has the best riddles in the series. I'll need to reread "High Rhulain," "Triss," & "Rakkety Tam" at some point. I only read through them once. And that's the wonderful thing about this series. While we may not necessarily like the same books, each of them is likely at least somebody's favorite. Sometimes we miss things, while other times certain stories just have to be allowed to grow on you. "The Bellmaker," for instance, will always hold a special place in my heart just for the character of Blaggut.

Thanks for taking the time to comment! I really appreciate getting comments like this. :) I actually agree with you that the Gonfellins completely miss the point of Gonff, but that’s part of why I find them interesting. The idea of a group getting so wrapped up in a singular figure that they completely miss the very foundations of what that figure stood for is fascinating. I might be misremembering this, but I think they changed by the end, which felt like their thieving ways were actually being shown as wrong. But, I totally get being frustrated by them. 😅 That’s a complaint about “Loamhedge” that I have been torn over each time I read it. On the one hand, it does make the whole journey feel pointless, but on the other, it would have been weird to have an actual secret cure lost at Loamhedge. I have so many mixed feelings on “Loamhedge”. I don’t know why “The Long Patrol” never clicked for me. I still love it though, since I love most of the Redwall books. “Pearls of Lutra” was actually the last Redwall book I read, so it had the whole series to live up to. And it fully delivered! I’m glad to hear someone else appreciates it and “Marlfox.” 😄 It’s always interesting to hear how someone else ranks Redwall books, because like you said, there are so many and people can have completely different opinions on them. There’s so much to love about this series, and there’s no one ‘correct’ ranking. Again, thanks for watching and commenting!

A note on the content in the series: As I recorded this, one of the most mature pieces of content in the series completely slipped my mind. A character introduced in book 2 has intense trauma that is hinted at repeatedly, especially in book 3. She is very young, a teenager younger than Tanwen, and the books imply she was raped and sexually abused. It is not explicit in the least, but Franklin includes just enough that you know what sort of trauma the character has. I will also re-emphsize that the male character I mentioned being creepy leers at women quite frequently. Though this never leads to any explicit scenes, it can be uncomfortable. All of this behavior is shown as very negative and evil. Sorry for not including this in the review! I hope this clarification is helpful.

Yeah, I know Outcast is usually a book people either love or hate. 😅 I can see why lots of people would like the book, it just wasn't what I was expecting. I love almost all the Redwall books, so I still think Lord Brocktree is a very good book. Dotti is probably one of my favorite characters in the whole series! I know my ranking is probably different from a lot of people's. Thanks for sharing your own take on it!

I forgot to mention, "The Wingfeather Saga" is also a Christian fantasy series, though I would say any reader could still enjoy it, as the Christian aspects are not heavy handed. This mostly means that when characters are in a dangerous situation, the narration will note that they pray to "the Maker" (the name for God in this world). If you are looking for a Christian series, this would be a great pick, but if you don't typically read Christian fiction, this series is still fantastic and does not rely on Christian elements for good storytelling.
