Wow, thank you for expressing my thoughts exactly about this season! I discovered this show a couple of months ago when my life got a bit too rough, enjoyed it for what it was (it really saved my mental health), and was eagerly anticipating the same fun experience with Season 4… and then we got this mess of a season. It’s like I’ve watched a weird OBX spin-off about a character going dark, with soap-opera levels of implausibility🥴 I don’t remember ever being so frustrated and annoyed by the writing on a TV show-ever (and I'm a passionate reader and cinephile; tragic deaths are nothing new to me!). If I could surgically remove all memories of Part 2 from my brain, I absolutely would🙈 I keep ranting under every OBX review here😂I’m also the type of person who heavily invests in characters, and I related to JJ so much. For such a show, it’s actually a very realistic representation of an abused, traumatized working-class person. Their foreshadowing in episode 10 was so obvious that I realized this character was going to die even before the final scene. I actually googled it, saw the articles about Rudy leaving, and got very, very upset-not because of the scene itself, but because I took the fact that they killed off this particular character, after so much trauma had been heaped on him, personally. Since I’m a writer who apparently needs therapy after this, I decided to break everything down in detail to understand why it left such a bad taste in my mouth. I don't know what was going on behind the scenes, and I don't really care. But looking at the final product, I'd say that the writing completely ruined the show. For a while, OBX was amazing at what it did-it was a perfect, slightly ridiculous, fun teen adventure show with some truly great themes such as the exploration of class dynamics and power. It was also heavily character-centric-like Friends with treasure hunting and wild plot twists-and that’s what made it so addictive and rewatchable. But now, I actually have a theory that the writers never actually saw it that way and took it a little too seriously. For one, in Season 3, they seemed to be most proud of the final episode, which, in my opinion, was the weakest link and highlighted the worst aspects of their writing. They leaned into those elements so heavily in Season 4 that they completely lost sight of what the show was supposed to be about-namely, a bunch of social outcasts with golden hearts who refuse to fit in and triumph against all odds. In the process, they ruined the arcs of JJ and Kiara, who were basically the heart and soul of this show, both together and separately. That’s why so many of their interactions feel awkward and strange this season. More than that, I’m starting to think it was all intentional. I’m pretty sure at this point that Jiara was the very thing that prolonged JJ’s life on this show-otherwise, he would’ve been killed off much, much sooner. Unfortunately, there are hints throughout the show that the writers always saw this character more as a plot device, meant to constantly add drama and shock value. The relationship with Kie, which inevitably spurred further growth for him, added unexpected depth to his character. But what was unfolding organically as great foundations for further character development, healing, and growth (which a lot of fans picked up on) was probably seen by the writers as mere stepping stones in the grand architecture of the story they had in mind all along. So they squandered the potential because it didn’t fit their vision for the story (if it even exists, I’m not sure about this one at this point). I think this is one of those sad cases where fans saw so much more potential for these characters, but the writers just didn’t care and were more focused on ticking off items from their storytelling checklist. 🥴 So my point is that JJ wasn’t supposed to have normal character growth, which is why we barely recognize him from previous seasons, and there’s this huge disconnect between seasons 3 and 4. In seasons 1-3, despite all his antics, he often acted like a more emotionally intelligent and mature person than John B or even Pope. Up until this point, he had been learning to open up more emotionally (Season 1), realized he had a real family after all, even after being dealt a bad hand in life (Season 2), and finally, after some confusion, saw that he actually had a chance at growing into an adult, being in a stable relationship, and doing something with his life (Season 3). But in season 4, the writers threw away all of his character development in one fell swoop (I brushed over it on the first watch, but part 1 is also full of eyebrow-raising character moments that make no sense whatsoever). So we find out that, even in the time between seasons, being with Kiara and having his friends as a support system, JJ hasn’t learned a single thing. It’s slightly ridiculous from a writing standpoint, unless the main purpose was to stunt his growth so he makes the same mistakes again and again, ultimately leading to his death. That's why we get JJ as a ridiculously immature and self-destructive 'Joker' archetype and an uncharacteristically weak, diluted version of Kiara, who’s constantly forced to follow his antics on his path of self-destruction. Of course, this doesn't work as a normal, human couple at all. Another reason why so many fans are losing their minds is that, whatever the intent, there’s nothing beautiful, meaningful, or satisfying about the ending for this character. The writers put JJ through the wringer for nearly three seasons, using his family history and complex, unconventional personality as sources of endless struggle, give him a brief respite, ten minutes of happiness, then trap him with his past once again, torture him further, and finally kill him in the most random, meaningless way possible. It’s like watching a crime documentary where someone’s loved one is randomly killed by a psychopath. And then, it’s like the writers are gaslighting us, suggesting that this character “had it coming” because of who he was. His genes and upbringing sealed his fate forever, and we should be happy that he at least got to have great friends, some exciting adventures for a while, and die in his girlfriend’s arms. The whole approach feels revolting and hollow, as if it were written from the cynical perspective of Groff, who indeed might see the world that way. It’s just wrong. At this point, the show feels too far gone. The high stakes are getting some praise, but the final season feels way too predictable. Over-the-top action, revenge, drama, and sad reflections on JJ’s greatness when he was alive-none of that can mask the obvious. The Pogues will probably kill or capture Groff, John B and Sarah will name their baby JJ, and almost everyone will get a happy ending (depending on who survives). It’s all just… boring. But what about those miraculous, unexplained events-like that lady healing with a magical cloth?! After all the preposterous twists this show has thrown at us, is this really all we get? Honestly, if I were advising the writers, I’d tell them to embrace the absurdity and go full Riverdale. The show has always hinted at curses, miracles, signs, and bizarre coincidences. Even JJ’s death fits that vibe-he was cursed as Genrette, remember? Lean into it! Make the curse real and break it. JJ, a character who constantly sees himself as worthless and only valuable in self-sacrifice, deserves a truly epic, dramatic win. It would be ridiculous, sure-but it wouldn’t be boring.🙃 And all this talk about exploring Kiara and Rafe’s relationship is just… no. If they’re going there, I demand a storyline where JJ rises from the depths of the underworld to stop it from happening. That’s the only acceptable outcome. This show has always been a fairy tale-quirky and slightly ridiculous. It’s time they fully embraced that.🤪 I’m really curious about season 5 from a purely writing standpoint (I’m still racking my brain over this plot), but this series has officially ended for me with that scene in season 4 part 1 where they’re all together in Poguelandia 2.0., and JJ is dancing on the pier… I'm not a big fan of fanfiction as well, but I was so mad at the creators of this show that I ended up visualizing the whole alternative storyline with some additions of my own, creating a genuine season bible for Season 4 and a brief synopsis for Season 5, inspired by old classics (spoiler alert: JJ doesn't die, there’s no blue crown, and the whole conflict is actually centered around Outer Banks and its community/class dynamics, which should have stayed that way in the TV show, in my opinion 😉). I was trying so hard to make things actually make sense that I completely rewrote the story while keeping all the existing plot elements. 😆 It’s my official canon now (and I would love to share it btw, I'm interested in feedback🙂), and nobody can take it from me! I'm planning to develop and finish this story one day as a scriptwriting exercise💪 I was also wondering where you found the writers you mentioned, who also want to write an alternative version of the show. I'm really curious about the creative direction people are taking with this 🙂. P.S. One reason I solely blame the writing for this debacle is that I find it hard to believe the rumors about actor drama (especially regarding the use of stunt doubles), as someone with a Media Production degree. These kids aren't A-listers who can order people around or make ridiculous demands. They're just starting out in the industry. It’s not a good look. Plus, there's always someone on set responsible for managing such conflicts. Maybe I'm wrong, but I can't believe that such unprofessionalism of the production team on the whole is even possible.

GIRL, THANK YOU. I couldn't agree more with everything you said, all of your points. It's just so disheartening, what they’ve done to this show. How they ruined it. They messed it up _so badly_ it's unbelievable. You’re 100% right-JJ is to Outer Banks what Stiles was to Teen Wolf. You can’t, you just _can’t_ rob the group of its heart character and then keep the show going. It’s just not the same show after that. It’s not Outer Banks. Outer Banks is them together, the Pogues. _They’re the treasure._ You take one of them out, and that undermines everything else; it misses the entire point of the story. None of the other stuff matters anymore because it’s just not what the show’s about, it’s just not the show. It’s all lost now. Every single character suffered from extremely bad writing this season. It’s such a damn waste. No matter what happens next now, it will never end well. They _can’t_ have a happy ending now-it will always be tragic. I want to keep writing this comment, but I’m getting too emotional. I’ve been writing fanfiction for this show for YEARS, all of it JJ-centric. I’m so attached to his character and his story, I’ve been so invested. He’s endured so much, so much that I could relate to, and I needed him to see that there’s more to life than that hell. That there is a life beyond that, that there is respite and room for growth and a way out from all of the bullshit and cleaner air to breathe. And then they went and fucking did _that._ I can’t, I just can’t. This show had three seasons, ending with all of them alive and well, living in the home they built for themselves, processing everything that happened to them, and celebrating having each other in each other’s lives. They plan for their individual futures while never truly apart. They grow, they mature, they get to realize themselves more and more, and they get to remember their wild younger days and look back on those moments that shaped them with some smiles and some tears. And they are together. That is the only ending I accept for this show, period.

season 3 is worse imo, s4 part 1 was great.. e6-8 were solid.. the JJ thing was just a horrible ending for a character deserved so much more. (this is my opinion before watching the video)
