Welcome to Edward Taylor Organist You Tube channel!
I am currently based in Carlisle UK as Organist at the Cathedral whilst enjoying a career as a concert organist and conductor.
The primary aim of my channel is to promote some of the lesser known repertoire, mainly from 20th century Britain and France, for example Alcock, Harwood, Jongen and Rowley, and encourage organists to explore these pieces for themselves. For those church organists in particular, there are many works on my channel suitable for various seasons of the churches year from composers such as Whitlock, Willan, Tambling and many more. Of course many of the favourites of the repertoire are here too!
Most of the videos here are recorded on the wonderful 4 manual Willis organ at Carlisle Cathedral, rebuilt and enlarged by Harrison and Harrison.
Do check it out and please do join those who have kindly already subscribed to the channel, to keep in touch and up to date with videos as soon as they are posted!
Thanks!

Edward Taylor plays 'Pro Defunctis' from 7 Improvisations by C. Saint-Saëns
This is the sixth Improvisation from the set of seven by Camille Saint-Saëns' Op. 150. ‘Pro defunctis’ quotes the gregorian chant theme from the Offertory of the Requiem, Domine Jesu Christe. It is one of three of the Improvisations that uses gregorian chant, something that Saint-Saëns had not done in his compositions since his Opus 4 Mass and Opus 8 duos.

Edward Taylor plays Rowley: Hymn prelude on 'St Hugh'
Переглядів 4029 місяців тому
This is the first of four hymn preludes on Lent hymn tunes by the British composer Alec Rowley. The melody of 'St Hugh' is usually sung to the words: Lord, teach us how to pray aright. The melody is presented very slowly in the pedals below some lush harmonies in the hands. Alec Rowley designed all of his music to present different challenges to his students. This piece has sudden changes of ke...

He was responsible for the anglican tradition establishment in St Thomas which remains to this day. Noble is mainly remembered for his church music, two well known cantic...
Edward Taylor Gade: Allegro from Three pieces on the organ of Newcastle Cathedral
Переглядів 591Рік тому
Neils Gade lived in the mid to late 19th century and was seen to be the most important Danish composer of his time. His three pieces for organ (Moderato - Allegretto - Allegro) stand among many compositions for many different genres of music but have a real place in amongst the repertoire of Europe. The final Allegro is lively and energetic throughout with quick semi quaver figurations often in...

Edward Taylor plays Leighton: Fanfare
Переглядів 821Рік тому
Kenneth Leighton started his musical career as a chorister at Wakefield cathedral during the 2nd World War. He went on to have a career as a composer and pianist via the University of Oxford and wrote much music for the church, both for solo organ and also for choir and organ. The Fanfare dates from 1966 and was a commission by Oxford University Press for the album, Easy Modern Organ Music: Six...
Edward Taylor plays: Willan - Prelude on 'Slane': At the end of the day
Переглядів 528Рік тому
Healey Willan sets the tune Slane in a peaceful and melodic chorale prelude which he subtitles 'At the end of the day'. This prelude is seen as suitable for the service of All Souls Day. The accompaniment is on the swell strings throughout. Stanzas 1 and 3 of the tune are at tenor pitch played on the strings of the solo organ with stanzas 2 and 4 being played on the choir flute. The tune only a...
Edward Taylor plays: Van Oortmerssen - 'For all the Saints'
Переглядів 407Рік тому
This short Chorale Prelude is the last of the Five chorale preludes published by Tactus in 1995. It is based on the hymn tune Sine Nomine by Ralph Vaughan Williams which is suitable for All Saints Day (November 1st) or All Saints Sunday. This hymn tune is upbeat and majestic, but Van Oortmerssen chooses to set it in a more subdued style. The tune is heard, in an augmented form, in the right han...
Edward Taylor plays Alcock :12 short introductory voluntaries No 1
Переглядів 308Рік тому
Sir Walter Galpin Alcock (1861- 1947) was an English organist and composer. He held a number of important posts as an organist, playing at the coronations of three monarchs. He was also professor of organ at the Royal College of Music, London. This piece is marked Andante and despite its title of 'introductory' this piece is definitely a multi-use work, suitable for almost any occasion. Startin...
Edward Taylor plays Spedding: Deo Gratias
Переглядів 261Рік тому
This little prelude is based on Francis Jackson’s creation hymn 'For the fruits of his creation’. Alan Spedding wrote it for Jackson's 90th birthday concert at York Minster which is now published in the volume 'Fanfare for Francis' which contains all the new works written for that concert. The piece has echoes of J. S. Bach in its style with a spritely accompaniment and continuo style bass much...
Edward Taylor plays Festival March on St George by P. E. Fletcher
Переглядів 711Рік тому
Percy Fletcher spent most of his musical career working in London West End theatres such as Drury Lane and his output for church or recital by way of organ music is quite small. His most well-known work for the organ is the Festival Toccata, found elsewhere on my channel, but this piece is rather fun too. St George’s Windsor is the tune sung to the harvest hymn words ‘Come, ye thankful people, ...
Edward Taylor plays Boëllmann: Suite Gothique - Toccata
Переглядів 854Рік тому
The Suite Gothique is the most well-known of Boëllmann’s works. It is made up of four movements, the last of which is 'Toccata'. Unlike most French toccatas, which start on the full organ in dramatic and joyful style, this one starts in a dark mood on the closed full swell. The first subject is stated in the pedals in the tonic key before the second subject appears this time in the manuals on a...
Edward Taylor plays Boëllmann: Suite Gothique - Prière à Notre-Dame
Переглядів 212Рік тому
The Suite Gothique is the most well-known of Boëllmann’s works. It is made up of four movements, the third of which is 'Prière à Notre-Dame'. This is a very peaceful movement, as the title may suggest, utilising the strings and flutes of the organ. Performed on the organ of Carlisle Cathedral.

Edward Taylor plays Grote :Postlude on Aberystwyth
Wonderfully played. This deserves far more recognition than it enjoys nowadays -- I think it superior to his other Elegy!
Yeah baby!!!! Leighton!!!!
Excellent performance, enjoyable Stainer!
Catherine Ennis played this when she came to Berkshire Organists at Reading Town Hall in November 1988; sadly no longer with us, but what a wonderful rendition; many thanks.
Sound recording quality is mediocre.
Very nice performance indeed!
Thanks, beautiful
I play all three quite regularly. Fred Wadeley was my examiner for ABRSM Grade 8 in 1964 !
Wonderful!
Thank you so very much indeed for posting this! Found it by chance and it brought back memories of being in my mid twenties practicing this piece in Swansea - on costs of the nerves of some church goers - being a visiting student from Germany and knowing the piece since I was 14 from a casette :) i bought in St. Pauls Cathedral ca. 1986. I always wanted to play it and it was impossible to buy the score in Germany in those days. I still have it after 30 years and ordered it in London while being in Wales - by phone - because it was pre internet. The great hommage to Bachs Passacaglia but still so clearly true English organ/cathedral music. Still we need more of those Tubas in Germany.
Absolutely superb.
I love this piece too and am learning at present - hoping to play it in November, so I have got some time. I think the seemless changes between the sections is going to be quite hard to achieve.
I have always preferred this to the other one. I wonder who notices that he brings in the same tune in the build up that Walford Davies uses in Jesu dulcis memoria, that concludes the collection.
I learnt this piece in the 1980s and had completely forgotten about it! Thank you for reminding me - and I have just added it to my next recital programme! Yours is a(nother!) tremendous performance!
❤ it!
Beautiful! We used this piece as our wedding recessional. :)
Wonderful. My teacher has given me this piece to learn. You have played it so beautifully. 😀
Beautiful lilting melody. Typical clever Whitlock key changes.
Bravo!
Beautiful ... thank you so much for sharing this beautiful piece of music
👌👌👌
Beautiful lyrical piece
👍👍👍Grandioses Stück und ausgezeichnete Interpretation👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏‼️‼️‼️☀️…
Glorious! That Willis Tuba! Wow!
@scottrowley79 many thanks indeed. The original Willis didn't have a Tuba. It's actually H and H 1907. We rather like it!
Very stately and exciting. Thanks!
Beautiful. I played this for a Grade 8 (UK) in 1964, and the examiner was one of Edwards Carlisle predecessors, Fred Wadely. I still play it 60 years later .
Bravo!
Splendid work!
Many thanks!
It was good to hear you playing this live, after Evensong this evening. An unexpected bonus! Loved the psalm accompaniment, too!
I've just added this piece to my forthcoming recital programme and have listened to this recording many times. There are several interpretations on UA-cam, but this is the one I keep coming back to. It really is excellent and I never tire of hearing it.
Thanks so much for your comment. Much appreciated. So glad you enjoy the performance and that it has influenced yours.
Great chorale brilliantly played, thank you Ed
Beautiful Welsh tune, registration and harmonies give a wash of sound with snatches of the tune coming through.
Well played and registered on a magnificent organ, but too slow here for me. The score shows Minuetto ♩=126 and a jaunty minuet tempo is just right for it, IMHO.
I really liked this performance and that organ sounds wonderful :-)
👏👏 Thanks ET. Nice job
👏👏
👏👏 Perfect - thank you
👏👏
Super - thanks ET 👏👏
Beautiful. Thankyou.
👍👍👍Sehr lebendig und mit grosser Bravour interpretiert👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏😘‼️‼️‼️….
A lovely performance that lets the music breathe. The subtleties can be heard.
Many thanks. Glad you enjoyed it
Great to hear the TT played at a reasonable speed.
ReFined dim. fermatas, 🥇
Absolutely spot-on tempo (not the silly speed adopted by some which makes it sound rushed, and doesn't allow detail to be heard). An exciting and polished performance.
The performance was superb, but why no 32 at the end?
Many thanks indeed. We don't have a 32' reed unfortunately!
Really very nice - sensitive performance as ever by ET. The Healey Willan hymn preludes really are a treasure, and technically within reach of most players
What fine playing! I could only wish the recording were in a louder volume; but your skill is evident.
Many thanks. Unfortunately my first few recordings were set at a lower volume, but have rectified that since. Hopefully you find the more recent recordings at a better volume
Lovely.....beautifully done!
