The Spear from Helldivers 2 has had quite the journey throughout the game's history, going from broken and busted (literally) to inadequate in recent patches. But is that all the Spear has to offer?
In this video, I aim to compile a somewhat comprehensive guide for Helldivers dabbling with Anti-tank Support Weapons. Passing on knowledge that should prove useful on both fronts.

Early HD2: "Wow the Spear can destroy fabs from a distance!" Buffdivers: "What's a Spear?"
IMO, to make Spear relevant again devs should: let it destroy heavily armored structures like jammers and detector towers AND letting it shoot it's rockets upward to manually guide it to a certain point(similar to how Javelin AT launcher works, which was a clear inspiration for the Spear). This will give it the utility to save strategems you'd otherwise need to clear troublesome objectives or use it as handheld artillery
As somebody suggested, a multi-target missile lock that can hit multiple targets with a single missile would be an awesome idea to add to Spear (it would be an alternative ammo choice, with less armor-piercing but the same dmg and possibly some blast radius). Also, it could allow lock on targets which have been binged by teammates so they can fire 'blindly' towards the target across the map.
Right now the AT rework kind of destroyed the spear's niche. It was supposed to be THE anti-tank; its *clearly* intended to be the definitive one shot one kill type of weapon. But it never was because it just didn't do enough raw damage and had *impact angle dependent penetration* on a weapon with *automatic* targeting, meaning it was and is a dice roll whether or not it does any damage, half damage, or no damage at all. But now that the AT rework happened and the recoilless is reliving its Helldivers 1 glory days of being the definitive 1-shot 1-kill AT rifle, there is no longer a need for something like the spear. Its fundamentally valueless, because a weapon that one shots any tank in the game already exists and it has more ammo, a better reload, and isn't liable to randomly decide that it doesn't do damage anymore or target the wrong thing. A weapon like the spear will NEVER be competitively viable as long as the enemy lacks enemies that the recoilless (or other forms of AT) cannot kill in one hit, and even if such enemies do exist, the spear in its current form still isn't better than the recoilless because it just plain doesn't do more damage than it- Not in one shot, not per second, and not total across its entire ammo reserve.
"Erhm but the spear does 4k damage!" Yes, but the Recoilless can score headshots. Reliably. Every time. Which dramatically raises the actual damage it deals, and more importantly is dealing that damage to a specific bodypart (the HEAD- or vent, or squishbutt, whatever the weakpoint is on that heavy) with dramatically less health and thus always results in a one shot kill. If your spear hits the head of anything, you got extremely lucky- it is not artificially reproducible with 100% consistency, just because it depends so heavily on whether or not your rocket goes left or right or flies high or low or the target is near or far or even what the target is. For many targets it is fundamentally impossible for the spear to hit a weakpoint.
What? But the Bots are easier. To me. Like, I HATE the bugs, they're annoying, swarming bastards. But the Bots, you can clean them up easy.

I have to disagree with your assessment of the Spear. To put it bluntly, if you can aim you should be using the Recoilless Rifle. I’ve been using the RR since game launch so I will admit I am better with it than the average diver to the point I can consistently 1 hit tanks, striders and titans from 300-400 meters away. Everything is a potential ohk for the RR, the spear can bit from a bad angle for Factory striders and bile titans. I do believe it needs a buff and the ones i hear and promote are: -First give it an extra missile, I dont think that would break it. -Second give it an alt fire and here are the more interesting ones A) A MIRV/Cluster missile that breaks apart and launch more smaller missiles at multiple targets. This makes the Spear more versatile taking scout striders/brood commanders. B) Give it a drill mode. After the missile hits, it drills into the target for 2 seconds and then explodes (making it more consistent at ohk titans and factory striders) 3) Make it Laser guided (think like the commando) 4) Make it a TV missile. Think Black Ops Valkyrie or TV missile from Battlefield4 where your POV turns to the missiles and you steer it to the target
Wait for the illuminate they have all kinds. Boys are the upgrade from bugs. And they prepare you for the illuminate. Then the next if we get one will be harder.
The bugs give the fantasy of making the players a force of pure carnage against a limitless number of enemies, the bots give the players the fantasy of an elite team of commandos dropped behind enemy lines.
I don't need to know the Spear. I AM THE SPEAR!!

Honestly, they should just allow team reload on a person holding the weapon, I don’t understand why you’d have to ask others to give up the backpack slot just for that mechanic

Another issue with the spear is that it has a limited range of 300m. The RR just goes forever. Want to get a spore or shrieker tree from farther, might as well have the RR. I used to be the tree support guy with my spear but now my buddies all bring the RR and they take care of those now. I still use the Spear because I tend to run off solo now and will flank snipe when they get breached on
It would be cool if it was changed to fire more like the IRL Javelin, changing it from just a lower-ammo having recoilless to potentially something that could be used for steathily destroying nests and fabricators?
Quasar cannon with a jetpack is my goat especially on cold planets where the cooldown's shorter
i use the spear very often, a support gun with a single objective, to take out heavy units, fast, from far or up close (30 m). To have the ability to wield a gun like that, with such power, is simply incredible. And yes it has limitations like ammo, or the lock on but you can save a stratagem, like orbital laser. can t recommend enough
The one job for the spear is to take out command bunkers from a far in 2 hits
Spear needs a ground attack lock on like the IRL Javelin has. My biggest issue with it vs the RR is that I can aim freely and don't have to wait for a lock. The RR is an AT shell on demand.

I love using the spear on clear maps. Taking out towers from across the map is so satisfying
I believe Spear should have more ammo, which can be easily don from arranging the rockets on the backpack going from 4 total to 6, and instead of adding, actaully restricting the ammount of targets it may target, no walkers at all, or even brood commanders, but increase the ammount of structures it can attack, therefore, maybe even putting a different tipe of ammunition that hold bunker bustink capabilities for example. It is not a wepon designed to figth frontline, but on a tactical & estrategic level, you can´t take hundreds of terminids at once, but 2 Helldivers with primary weapons can, yet they will struggle to do so as 2 Bile titans and shrikers harass them, therefore, the spear user will take the Bile titans and shrikers nest, taking the biggest enemies and the capacity for shrikers to respawn, only 2 enemies and a spawner don´t sound like much, but for only 1 player to do so would allow others to devastate smaller enemies without issues, the problem ain´t the spear, but the lack of unit cohesion amongst groups. 1 spear, 1 recoiless rifle and 1-2 commando/disposable user provide a lever of team flexibility not many can understand until they experience it, instead of 4 guys with recoiless having to join fire over the same targets to quickly dispatch it, being vulnerable to other threats as they do. Spear = Strategic team advantage wepon to turn the tide eliminating especific targets Other AT´s = Quick tactical response to inmminent threats that spawn in larger numbers.

The coolest idea for the spear I’ve heard was an idea for an alternative fire mode, that shoots a missile comparable to the Jericho from IronMan. For example: you switch to this mode and it lets you lock on to 3 targets in that vicinity, like 3 gunships in the area of your scope and the missile parts on its way (maybe with another button press and takes out these targets). This missile is weaker but this way you have a use case for the smaller enemies you can lock on also like striders. This mode + a few more shots maybe like 5 or rather 6 in total would make the spear nearly perfect and very fun to use.
It's not always the weapons that need to change. Adding enemies that the Spears strength outshines other weapons would be good too. For example a Heavy gunship. I loved the Spear against the gunships before their armor were lowered and I think it could have a very valid place as a AA support weapon against a flying enemy that would use speed and distance to make the RR very difficult to use against it. Similar to the Factory Strider I think this enemy should have destructible weaponry and or destructible thrusters for AP 4 so an autocannon could make it slower by destroying a thrusters allowing RR to hit easier but the Spear could just solo kill it. No weakpoint necessary.

Funnily enough I think I'm the odd one out when I think bots tend to be both easier and more fun than the bugs. I have friends who fight against the bots just like they do the bugs, and bot drops are significantly easier to stop or deal with, while bug breaches have always been a pain and give you 20+ more enemies to deal with. I think less enemies that are more challenging and bulkier is easier to deal with than more enemies that are less challenging and faster. Plus, the bots don't have stalkers, so that's already a lot better.
Its like the video said in the beginning= versatility. The autocannon and recoilless rifle got each an ammo type that bumped their utility. The autocannon is a fantastic long range chaff slayer and anti-aircraft weapon while the recoilless rifle can now turn a small group of enemies into a pulp. In pure anti-tank shot per shot scenarios, the spear is still the best. But thats the problem= its limited to those scenarios. My suggestion for this weapon is= 1. Give it an alternative firing mode. a SACLOS system (aka the commando). You point and aim where the missile flies. Why? because of 2= Give it a secondary type of missile. And i advise an proximity HE explosion. This wont nerf the other main AT options while making the spear more viable.
Fighting the bots is a test Butchering the bugs is a race It's like halo: fighting the covenant vs fighting the flood That said, i do hope the rumored third faction is like the promethians in halo 4: small enemies that have unique roles, and large enemies that are a brutish threat made worse by their small allies, like how the drones can revive the knights back to full operation if given time and not enough gunfire
I'd like a firing option that locks onto a location rather than a specific enemy. Location locked ammo would be programmed to have a larger blast radius and shrapnel rather than penetration. This would give it more versatility, as you could shoot it anywhere you like, and you could then use it to eliminate large clusters of small/medium enemies
Even if it was faster, had more ammo than recoilless, I'd still have to pick the recoilless if I'm on anti-heavy duty. The Spear's just not reliable or efficient for what it tries to be.

The spear is nice for bots but mid for bugs imo
Spear is bad recoiless. Less ammo, reload time, cant shoot close range. It can aim at commander which destroys the good part, aka taking out only heavy enemies. And last thing is that commando and eat are basicly better than both of these. 2 hits every minute + can kill charger with drop in and instead take other weapon for adclear. Now that is taken out, if spear had more ammo, it could be same as recoiless.

I love the spear I main that strat don’t get a lot of kills but most my kills are Heavy’s
Spear (Javelin): Shoot and Forget. Recoil(Real) : Snipe but also risk missing. But also a way to One Shot ANYTHING (AT-AT's included)(EXTREMELY PRECIOUS ON Bot missions) Quasar(Notreal) : Weak but It'll get the Hulks for ya. Commando (M202): In Reality its a Missiles with Napalm but in this one still a "Good" weapon but cant replace others Anti Tank (LAW) : It gets the job done. Thats it... Outside of that Its just that.
2 rockets more, and maybe if its get some sort of aoe stetting like the recoilles some time ago, i would it combine with a change in the targeting system. if it is in its default setting as it is now it should only target big targets Ammc Class 4 and above Chargers, Hulks and so on, BUT no striders or commanders anymore pls, waste of ammo and annoying if they get marked instead their big buddy near them... but there come the setting for more aoe, this should be the opposite no big targeting but small ammo class 3 and less, maybe some kind of cluster bombs idk
Right before the current recoilless meta I was having fun using the spear, sneaky armor, 3 sentey turrets, and hogging resupplies on the hardest bot difficulties. Pretty much i would drop the resupply at the beginning before teammates need it, and lock on to half the maps structures and big enemies. Worked great honestly lol
Why do people even use the commando? It's probably the worst stratagem in the game. For me, the spear is just a means to take down dropships and maybe a hulk or a charger/titan if it gets too close. You need to use it as a team.
Give the Spear 5 rockets on back, and an option to switch to target: any, and target: heavy and more AOE. then people will use it.
For Terminits I prefer the autocannon, and for Bots the quesar. I would take it against bots maybe if had no backpack and was more like the Commander.
