I think Michael Matson was the best choice for sonny black. However it's more believable that Chazz Palminteri would be Al Pacino's capo more so than Michael Matson

You really feel for Lefty despite his obviously disgusting proffesion and I believe that was all down to Pacino. Scarecrow is another Pacino’s performance that doesn’t get enough credit.

Chazz is an icon but Madsen was pitch perfect as Sonny Black. Scary,imposing, cool and even a little human,one of his three best roles.

Chazz would've absolutely knocked it out the park as Sonny Black, but Michael Madsen was still great. It's also one of the most underrated performances of Pacino's career. We usually see him in affluent type roles; we hardly ever see him as a downtrodden man like we do in Donnie Brasco.

Chazz would have made a great Sonny Black. No disrespect to Madsen who did well in the role.

Madsen is perfect as Sonny Black because he is physically imposing just like the real Sonny Black was. Chazz would have been a great Traficante, Sonny Red or the FBI guy

People always say Goodfellas or Casino but really the two greatest Mob movies are Donnie Brasco and Gotti (1996).

I liked Al more in Donnie brasco than the godfather. The godfather films were overall better but Pacino’s acting in Donnie brasco was incredible. The kitchen scene, the scene in the car is so good.

This the first time I hear of an actor, that coulda played a role I already liked but still wouldn’t have minded to see the alternative…normally once you enjoy the actor casted anyone else just seems weird but this woulda actually been pretty dope

Of course, in real life though Lefty wasn't a broken-down wise guy. He was pretty formidable and deadly. You didn't want to cross him.
