Break out your binomial distribution calculator or have a shmooze with ChatGPT and once you correct its various misunderstandings of postseason series you'll find the Mets are in that neighborhood after usually not winning the NL East and therefore usually having to play four postseason series, three of them typically against better teams including a much stronger Dodgers team. Imagine the Mets add 3 more wins and get all the way to a 93 win projection, and play 4 postseason series against teams that win 90, 93, 100 (guess who?), and 98 wins (the AL champ). Their odds in each case are 0.55×0.50×0.35×0.40 = ~3.85%. That contrasts with roughly a ~2.65% chance as a 90 win team. That's why you don't sign Bregman, even if you think he can add 3 wins (it's more like 1.5-2.0 wins) and saddle yourself with an old expensive player already in significant decline. You just can't build a juggernaut with the Dodgers' roughly 25% chance of winning the World Series in 2025 solely through FA, particularly when your nucleus ISN'T made of superstars (though with Lindor and Soto they're getting closer), and particularly when you're already an old team. You boost your chances by a couple of % for 2025 but kill yourself in future seasons. Another problem is that even if you win the division you often don't bypass the NLWC round as the division winner with the worst won-loss record.

Last year was a miraculous run that will not happen again, the Braves are 100 times better just by the fact they played without Riley , Acuna and strider didn't play last season due to injury and we were life and death last day of the season to beat them.
