The Shining and the Hidden Evil of the Overlook hotel
You could say it's the classic "garbage in garbage out" scenario. I saw this movie when I was young and never understood it. I see now what the author and director were trying to portray.
I would imagine that HAL is the BONE which that DEEPSTATE manipulated to disrupt the crews mission.
Congratulation on this fascinating video that I think highlights an absolutely fundamental message that underpins this whole movie (which to my mind does not work very well as a straight story, but does work as a collection of several allegories). The characters are indeed doubled up across time, and share in the same downfall. But I think you are wrong in saying that Kubrick does not accuse America specifically as the cause of their downfall: On the contrary, the fact that the evil keeps happening to different people across time shows that he means to say that it is the PLACE that is the source of the evil. And by place I do not mean the Overlook. I recently on my own came up with the theory that the sheer geographic size of the country has altered Europeans and turned them into something completely different, and not in a good way. And I now think that this is precisely the meaning of the opening shots that shows the gigantism of this land: The size and isolation is so great that it changes people in an irreversible way, and this continues into their subsequent generations.
I don't think that HAL was lying about the drawings. He was evaluating the progress of Dave's skills. He even comments that they are getting better, even though they are not great. I don't consider that a lie. I believe that HAL talking about the mission was him trying to find out if the crew knew more than they were letting on. In this he was monitoring them for the biological signs that the crew would be lying. I believe that the protect the crew directive and the mission must succeed under any circumstances without telling Bowman and Poole, gave HAL a causality loop that he could not comprehend. I believe that HAL was thinking that Bowman and Poole needed to know things that he couldn't disclose, but needed to disclose for the mission to succeed and he couldn't handle the loop that he was stuck in and thus the paranoia.
2010 is one of the best underrated sequels imo. Excellent video 📹 🙏🙏
Because it was in the script?
In spite of all the inconsistencies with naming the characters, the interaction between Torrance and gravy in the bathroom is one of the best scenes in all of cinema. Both actors were at the top of their game. Nicholson came across as absolutely bonkers and unhinged, while Stone came across as demonic and menacing.
HAL probably malfunctioned because he was the low government bid.
Wonderful explanation. It took all my loose thoughts and theories and put them into a succinct argument. Thank you for this
Great commentary. Can’t get enough of this. Nabokov said, “A novel is not meant to be read. It is meant to be reread." Same with movies. I’ve never been one to analyze movies, but I appreciate you and the others who do.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
My interpretation is Grady the waiter (1920s) is the grandfather of Grady the caretaker (1970s). Hence the difference in daughter ages. They are a different generation of family.
Great insight
You're absolutely on the mark here… also, Wendy literally does all the labor of caretaking: operating the boiler, contacting the authorities, cooking, cleaning - and all Jack does is destroy. He's like Saturn eating his children.
Christ at the clothesline!!!! ....(subjectively) you have answered all the theory-based questions of the "A side" of The Shining .....Now, you couple your A side, which raises the bar beyond the ceiling, with the practical-based B side....(please, please view (if you haven't already) the You Tube video: Two Different Jacks) and you have all the answers. The A side marries perfectly with the B side, finally allowing to TO-TA-LLY understand the film, The Shining, and experience the masterpiece with all the knowledge you'll ever need; side A needs B, side B needs A. Again subjectively, Kubrick may now rest in peace, shining all the while. Sincerely, CA MacKinnon Montreal, Canada
A very ideology driven explanation. Feels more like a costumed propaganda video than an authentic one
Charles Grady could well have been the son of Delbert Grady which would explain why Delbert had no memory of murdering his family. Also it could be the reincarnation effect. Delbert becomes Charles. Jack becomes Jack Torrence.
You can read more on this in my book, "HAL's Legacy: 2001's computer as dream and reality" (MIT Press)
Has anyone ever told you, that you look like Xolo Maridueña? Very good looking.
You could say that when Jack first appears in the Gold Room he has an absence of "green" (the money) but when he comes back he now has "green" on him. Is it a coincidence that Wendy has a vaguely, stereotypically squaw-like appearance? Could the Gold Room going from being empty to full be a representation of frontier settlement?
I just noticed an interesting detail here. The toilets all appear to have push-button flush mechanisms. Im not familiar with such technology and have never seen a button imbedded in a wall to activate the flush cycle on a toilet. The urinals and the commode in the background of the bathroom scene all have this feature. It also shows up in the bathroom in room 237 and in a rather odd place, the hotel suite at the end of 2001 : A Space Odyssey. Was this an odd obsession of Kubrick's or is it just an artifact of a particular set designer hired for different films?
There’s knowledge and there’s understanding. I must admit. I didn’t get it until I got it. You either get it at face value or ….
Well done... never seen the scene in the bathroom broken down so well...!!! What acting... ever gesture is like music... brilliant...!!!
One Hal of the story 😂....but I watch it all❤
10:30 awww c’mon lets go a little easier on him! The sketches aren’t that bad! Damn!
I think the hotel represents Jack's mind and the maze represents Danny's. This is why there are so many inconsistencies in how they are represented throughout the film, and why Danny seems to bait Jack into chasing him into the maze, because the hotel spirits cannot help him there.
It's true,I'm an old school guy. Very allegorical.
I never realized Grady was in Clockwork Orange.
My Hats Off to a Compelling and interesting Video of one of the BEST Movies ever made. The Videographer's feelings and Reader's Comments that led to HAL's malfunction, are VERY Informative. It was great to Revisit the Conversation between HAL and Dave, and based on Videographer's points, get a better Idea of the reason for Discussion. To get a better feeling of HAL being a "Servant", it might if been better to include the Film portion of Frank viewing Home Video while asking HAL to Adjust the Lounge. Anyway, great Video! Look forward to more Work from Videographer!
Being white is really and truly a blessing ❤
I would guess it was a mistake. Prob the news article was in the book of press clipping in the novel which Kubrick had planned to put in the movie but didn’t use-you can see it on Jack’s writing desk in one shot. These discrepancies are okay in this type of movie where disorientation adds to the effect of the Overlook where reality warps
I had my daughter watch this when she was 8 years old and she hated it. It was movie night and she said it was the worst one we ever had lol. Today she’s a film student and likes Kubrick.
This movie was way way ahead of its time. Science fiction classic
Notice that after Jack tells Grady he recognizes him, Jack says he (Grady) chopped his wife and daughteR up into little bits; not daughterS. Plus, are we so sure this didn't take place in 1975, not 1980, when the movie was released?
The bathroom scene with Grady is always the part that locks me in.
HAL did NOT malfunction. He was told to not allow the 2 crew members who were awake for the whole trip to know what the mission was about. Everything he did was the logical result of being told to keep that secret. When he realized they were going to radio earth to ask and that people on earth might tell them, he had to disable the radio. When Frank went out to fix the radio, he would find nothing wrong with it and so know that HAL had lied to them and perhaps disconnect HAL and then radio earth, and they might find out. So he had to kill Frank. He knew the sleeping scientists aboard knew what it was about, and he knew they would be awakened as they neared Jupiter, so he had to kill them, so they could not tell. And he finally had to try and kill Dave to keep him from finding out what the mission was. HAL was following orders. The orders he was given simply did not take into account how an artificial mind would interpret absolutist commands.
This video is criminaly underrated. I love silent hill 2 and cinematography overall too and you combined and explained both perfectly in this video. I hope you'll get more attention.
Great, now my algorithm is gonna suggest that I watch every pretentious douchebag’s analysis of The Shining, including yours. Keep yourself away from the front of the camera bro, you’ve got the voice of a ninny and the face of a generic mook
this is a mean thing to say
Whenever my A-35 unit stops working, I just slap it on the side. Works every time.
i think its just part of scheme to confuse us , so much of the movie doesnt quite make sense
I saw this upon its first release. I was 16 - 17 at the time. I thought that progress in space would be much more rapid than it turned out to be. That film had a huge impact on me. My father was more impressed by the music and played a vinyl Lp with it, so load that the neighbours asked if they could borrow it - possibly to get some peace. It had a profound effect on me and I took my maths and physics very seriously - leading to a degree in pure maths. It just took application and hard work. I'd been destined for the factory floor or to be an electrician etc. My life took a very different path because of this film
A robot gaining consciousness may be the worst toutoure to anything ever created as they may have no mouth nor legs body or anything they aren't able to do anything to change it as one of the laws of robotics robots must not hurt humans-by me
Delbert Grady must be thinking: who do I have to murder for people to remember my real name!?
Evil
Boston? He has a British accent?
It goes wrong because its in the script and Otherwise it would'nt be a very interesting film!
I liked Ullmans 'intray' phallus.
Elias, this is an utterly FANTASTIC deep dive into the mythos of the film; very interesting to hear Stephen King speak about that conversation with Kubrick; super-wonderful nugget of info that I'd never heard of before, and you bring it to your audience splendidly. Keep up the great work! You have a new subscriber, Elias. ;)
@@JonnyRiot thank you for the subscription and the kind words!
I never noticed this before - but as you show at 2:25, when Jack confronts Delbert Grady - Jack looks down and counts on his fingers - like he's trying to calculate the number of years.
