How to Be a Better Decoy Part 3
In this video, I’m teaming up with Carlos to dive deeper into the art of decoy work for French Ring. It’s an incredibly technical and demanding role that requires not just physical skill, but a deep understanding of dog behavior and timing. Throughout this session, I learned a ton of new techniques and received great feedback on areas I need to improve. While I’m aware that I still have a long way to go before mastering the craft, I’m more motivated than ever to continue developing as a decoy.
Decoy work is essential in French Ring, as it helps the dogs train to their highest potential by simulating real-life scenarios with precision and intensity. I’m excited to share my journey as I grow and refine these skills, and I’m looking forward to seeing how far I can push myself in this discipline.
If you’re interested in learning more about French Ring, decoy work, or just love to see the training process unfold, be sure to stick around. I’ll be sharing more videos documenting my progress and lessons learned along the way. Your support and feedback mean the world to me as I take on this exciting challenge!

Dog Training 101: Left & Right Turnabouts Made Easy!
Its actually a crime in various contrys to walk a big dog of leash and to have a big dog without a fence. US is crazy for not having laws like this.
See how far the dog is outside on Carlos? Still to low, he didn't have you holding the leash making it harder
Ok, thanks. I'll work on it. I really appreciate your input!
First thing, get him up below your knee. He is going low because of the pressure YOU are putting on with this stick and pulling because of this same pressure. Be more rhythmic in your movements. Stop promoting working your own dog. Most decoys here in the US barely have worked any dogs so it's bad enough we are stuck with baby decoys so much. Not their fault. This was a really good example of a dog who doesn't care to bite Dad, but will because he is asked. You reward conflict this way. Keep up the videos and training
Thanks! I'll definitely try to work on this.
Keep moving as the dog comes in. Don't rotate like you did, cause you see what the handler had to do there. Your baton work could be more rhythmic cause he's your dog as well as you need to move faster and tell him he's a good boy.
I see what you're saying, thanks!
Very useful video! Helping a lot in training my shy foster dog!
I'm happy it was helpful!
I have been wondering this for years. Can you get a dog to re-engage after the arm sleeve comes off? I heard a story of a police officer with K9 and a suspect engaging, but once the man's coat came off, the dog did its happy dance and wouldn't engage again. The cop was severely beaten, and the suspect got away.
That requires civil training, lots of sport dogs are equipment oriented. There are ways to get a dog not to focus on the equipment.
Can you train my dog
Yes, call me 361-360-6131!
Still signaling this dog? Come on now
It's a handler habit, next couple of videos I won't use hand signals.
Do you use a different heel command for the focused heel? Or do you expect your dog to be in the focused heel whenever you give the "au pied" command? My next goal with my dog is to work on the focused heel but I'm confused as to whether it's a separate command entirely or not. I don't want her to always be in a focused heel but I want her to be able to do it when asked. What do you suggest?
It's my opinion that it should be separate commands. I'll do a video on formal and informal commands.
@@SergioEsquivelK9 thank you! Looking forward to it
Nice, the old training field. Nothing like trying to enquire in the sand.
Thanks!
I wouldn't mess with them...
Teddy is a sweet boy… he’s just a teddy bear 🧸 honestly.
Thank you. I have this problem with one of my dogs for years and I could not figure out why. 😊
Happy to help! 😊
1000% right! I always talking this exactly to people who's dogs don't wanna do proper recall.
Thanks!
Wait, was Mistake misspelled because it was a MISTAKE‽
It's me trying to be funny.

Where is your jacket?
My pup Rambo gets tired of his treats. Some days he's fast, and some days, he's just slow and no desire to train. But his half sister has so much drive that shes always quick and motivated and ready to go.
What are your goals with your pups?
@SergioEsquivelK9 the female pup is now entered into CGC classes and the male is in his 0 to 6 months classes. We plan to start them around a year old in Schutzhund. For sure the female. My male is more laid back. They're both related from czech lines.
@@allsmiles2938 be sure to check out French Ring, it's a great sport!! If you ever have any questions please feel free to ask.
@@SergioEsquivelK9 Thank you so much for your recommendation! I will definitely look into that! 🐺
💯
Thanks for the support!!
Oh boy lol
He learned a lot that session.
Where is your jacket sir?
I know...I almost didn't post this because I didn't have my jacket on. The video that's coming out next week where we show his progress I have my jacket with me.
@SergioEsquivelK9 the stupid heat calls to people to not wear the jacket, but it's sloppy training. The dog needs to be able to go up.
If necessary
@@JeffOehlsen it is sloppy and unprofessional of me not to have my gear on. I have some bad habits I'm trying to work on. Thanks for watching and keeping me focused.
@SergioEsquivelK9 I started ring in a club that only had pants. So many times the dog had a bite on the upper body, but had learned to bite only the pants. Keep on keeping on
Brevet
Yes, brevet.
This is awesome!
Thanks!
Loved your video. My border collie and I are competitive in obedience and rally. I really would love to nail down the focused heel.
You can do it!! What's your border collie's name? How long have you been doing obedience and rally.
@@SergioEsquivelK9Her name is Skye. We started competing last year. We have been moving up rather quickly in both rally and obedience. She’s extremely smart sometimes too smart lol.
@@brehoutby3693 that's great! Congratulations on the success! What's next for you all?
@@SergioEsquivelK9 I will keep moving up in rally and obedience. I have her jumping in the pool, so possibly dock diving. We have dabbled in scent work and enjoyed that. Unfortunately we don’t have many scent trials around here. I’m in Canada and would have to travel to the US, only a 10 minute drive for me. However, the government is putting new laws in staring August and it will be a lot harder to travel into the US with an animal. We also tried barn hunt which she loved. It did up prey drive for squirrels so we didn’t continue. It took a bunch of training to not react to squirrels lol
Love seeing a clever pup get started. What are your ambitions for Fozzie? Or will you let him work out what he's best at?
He will do French Ring sport for at least a Brevet. Maybe some dock diving and AKC OB.
I say my dog wouldn't fight to save his own life, but truth be told, I don't know. But I do know this, his recall is second to none. When I say leash time, even if another dog is coming at him,he come's to the leash. I have been in a position, where I've been out walking him,and come across some odd ball's. Weirdly enough,my dog seems to sense something in me. The tail stops wagging,he gets in close to me,and looks staunch, which seems to intimidate. Yet any other time he just goes along, tail wagging, not a care in the world who's around.
Thanks for sharing!
If you need some sort of protection you either are in the wrong business or live in the wrong country.
That's one way to look at it.
My dog wears a special vest that says 'I train.' Haven't had any problems so far 😂
That's great and all, but what a gorgeous dog!
She is gorgeous!!
that's why i love my German shepherd, she's solid black and absolutely looks aggressive AF. but she's a giant baby unless you go after one of my kids. then you might end up in small pieces, I'm not responsible for what happens to someone that goes for one of my kids in front of our dog. it's definitely not going to go well, that I'm sure of. she got sprayed by a skunk a few times, by the second spray straight to the face she wouldn't even go in the front yard at night, even just to go pee. until my nonverbal autistic son went out the front door while i was cooking and didn't notice until he was already out, and couldn't stop him. she ran out, knocked him back and took a third spray to the face, didn't even hesitate for a second. and based on how much that smell hurts my face at that smell concentration, i cannot even imagine what that feels like to a dog with a good snoot like shepherd. i can say that people no longer slow down while driving to watch us in the yard. better than any security system, now people ask to come in my fence and listen to my answer before they just wander over
Wow!! Great story, thanks for sharing! You definitely have a great dog!
I love it man! 🏆

More good information. Loving this series!
Glad to hear it! Be sure to reach out to Bethany and let her know!!
WT! playing with a dog to distract them!? the fact that you didn't touch on why! the kids would be making the dog nervous or anxious is DUMBING down dog training.
Thanks for your feedback! How would you handle this? 😊
@@SergioEsquivelK9 I charge a lot to teach trainers! In this you don't show what the puppy is doing at threshold? is the puppy fearful, nervous, anxious or insecure?
@@chrisr-m6568 i’d love to get more information on the services you provide. I’m always trying to learn more. overall I thought the video was pretty good considering the target audience. What could I have done better? What type of information would you like to see?
@@SergioEsquivelK9 I'm a dog behaviorist in LA, the problem is dog training doesn't resolve behavior issues. Just put out content that helps dog owners.
@@chrisr-m6568 what books would you recommend to read on puppy milestones and development?
Shouldn't have to work this hard with a dog. Send it back to the breeder
He'll grow out of all that other stuff without any help.
I don't send dogs back. It is a lot of work but, I can help this pup reach their potential.
A decent dog shouldn't be a lot of work
@@JeffOehlsen I think Fozzie is a great dog already showing significant improvement. I'll be posting a video of him in the next few weeks.
Your use of the word great is a bit misguided, he's obviously not great. He does look like a pup that if you just work him he will be ok
Awesome video! Loved the body language observations and explanations. I think a lot of people struggle with the body language stuff. Hope you make some more stuff with Bethany.
She's amazing!! contact her and let her know you loved her contribution. I'll try and do more videos with her.
Great content brother! My dog likes to pull on the leash. Been doing it since I found him. I’m gonna check to see if you covered that. Even if I keep him at my hip he tries to pull then if I give him any amount of leash he constantly pulls.
Thanks for the support! I'll do a video for you!!
Nice bro, keep it up! I was on headphones and noticed you came in my left ear and she came in the right. I’m not sure how to mix it, I don’t have a lot of experience with videos. Hope you’re good brother. Love your videos!

What type training treats do you recommend for 4mo puppies
I like using Happy Howie meat rolls. I cut them up and refrigerate them. Zukes also makes good treats.
