Beniamino Gigli sang a song for his collection of Italian songs on side four of his Cavalleria Rusticana recording. The song was O Grande Somno Dio O Great Almighty God. It is the most moving Italian song I have ever heard. I want it played at my funeral.

Eine der besten Interpretationen der Partie, die die Faszination von Beniamino Gigli als Caruso-Nachfolger begreiflich macht. Zu dieser Überzeugung trägt der Umstand bei, dass Gigli auf larmoyante Schluchzer verzichtete, mit denen er sich später ins Abseits stellte. Großes darstellerisches Vermögen blieb im leider versagt. Aber seine Erinnerung als großer Sänger in seiner besten Form hat bleibenswerten Kunstgenuss. .

There are various recorded versions of this aria, but for me, this is by far the best I've heard. Gigli's combined lovely tenor, his enormous skills and passion all make for a formidable interpretation of Giordano's piece.
