Exploring Taormina, a stunning hilltop town in Sicily! From the iconic Ancient Theatre of Taormina with breathtaking views of Mount Etna. We took a stroll along Corso Umberto for shopping and local vibes, relax in the Villa Comunale Gardens. The coast was stunning, with the crystal-clear waters of Mazzarò Beach. We love it. It’s ok to celebrate the wins! The final video in this series of 12, is about taking the time to celebrate. Oh my days, this work can be challenging! Some days, weeks and months, it can feel like that there is very little progress. However, when you ‘check’, there is almost always something to celebrate. Celebration is about acknowledging the progress that you and your peers are making, showing...

Could Opera be the most accessible art form? Video 11 of 12, is all about exploring Access and Opera. Specifically making the most of the Surtitle translations that almost always accompany any Opera. In July 2024, I shared our work on Tosca, with recorded audio description. This was possible, in part, because we could leverage the existing infrastructure and skills of the Surtitle team. As a re...

This video should have been called ‘Time for Awareness!’ (I must say the word ‘awareness’ 6 times in 10 seconds) Video 10 of 12, is focused on learning by engaging great training providers to keep awareness top of mind and skills up to date. Some of my favourite training this year has been with City Lit and Ramps on the Moon and Ben Glover Clear, insightful, actionable and led from great experi...

Are you organised? Do you fuel the change makers to do their work? Video 9 of 12 offers some thoughts on organising working groups, and motivating your allies and change makers. It’s a good point in this series to acknowledge the brilliant peers that make the work happen. Sometimes the work of an Access specialist is to listen, help open doors, stoke fires, resource people well and keep them mo...

Embedding Accessibility in all we do! Video 8, of 12, is all about the urgency to create systemic change in the way Accessibility is seen, understood, and actioned in an organisation. Working with Michele Taylor, MBE and a team of awesome people and associates at Ramps on the Moon, me and my peers are on a journey to discover and then challenge ableist structures and attitudes in order to break...

When you ask for feedback, are you confident you can action it? Video 7, in a series of 12 is about the time to consult. I have previously talked about the benefit of listening. This video talks specifically about gathering feedback in the form of a visitor consultation group. Talking to the customer, visitor or audience members will offer brilliant insights. It is extremely easy to only act fr...

“A goal without a plan is just a wish.” Video six in a series of 12 is a simple reminder to plan. In my experience, taking the time to carefully plan is consistently overlooked in many functions in the performing arts sector. Interestingly, the way in which the industry plans for a performance from a technical production perspective is (mostly) meticulous. However, a lot of functions around the...

“We just can’t do it!” When obstacles arrive, how can we do something a bit different to work around it, and use the situation as an opportunity to progress beyond what the standard is? Video 4 of 12, is titled ‘Time for Digital’. In this video I wanted to share about using a ‘problem to solve’ to your advantage to try something new. Working with an amazing team of creatives in Dec 2023, we cre...

Just missed you last year. I was there on opening day on Wednesday and went to top of the Frauenkirche. The stollen is the thing to tout in Dresden. I bought some whole stollen and stollen-bites for our German Christmas Eve service in Orange, California. They were a big hit. My first time back in Dresden since 1993. Thanks for the images.
