    New at guitar here. I'm wondering... If you have a guitar tab that shows the melody but doesn't show what the chord is, how do you know which chord? For example, that first C in the song is just an open high E, so if there wasn't a C above it, how would you know it's a C? I have a couple melodies but there's no chords listed. And since I'm new, I would think that since that's an open E, that it's an E chord, but I'd be wrong, so I'm obviously missing something.

      @GodfreyGuitar 4 дні тому

      The melody note won’t always be same as the name of the chord. Most chords are made up of three notes, and some have more. The C chord you mentioned includes a C, E, and G. The E melody note is part of that C major chord. This song is in the key of G major. You can use other chords in the key of G major, but the standard chords in this key are G, Amin, Bmin, C, D, Emin, and F#dim. Except for one or two spots, most of the chords in this example are taken from that collection of chords. If you are looking at guitar music that only shows the melody but no chords, a lot of times you can find the chords for the melody with a Google search. The chords you find will often be in just a lyric/chord format (no notes), so it will take a little bit of trial and error to figure out how the chords line up with the melody. That’s a lot to think about if you’re just getting started! This will start to make more sense once you get to the point where you can start learning some theory. If you’re new at guitar, I don’t recommend trying to dive into theory right away. Just have fun playing. But if you do eventually want to get into the theory side of things, I recommend first learning to read standard notation, and then learn your major scales (not just patterns, but being able to name the notes as you play them).

    This is the best lesson I've seen, among thousands of lesson videos, magazines etc in my 41 years of playing. Expert knowledge presented in logically organized, practical, immediately applicable sequence with ideal visual aid and no "clutter talk". Any aspiring neoclassical shredder needs this lesson. I'm going to apply this empowering method to arpeggiate other scales' chords using groups of various 3 strings including string skipping. Thank you.

    Shell voices will also use the 2nd omitting the 3rd hence, SUS. Is that not correct ?

    • @GodfreyGuitar
      @GodfreyGuitar 12 днів тому

      More commonly, you'll see the 3rd raised to a 4th for a sus4 chord (which can be labeled either "sus" or "sus4").

    Hi, Why don't we position fingers R-3rd-7th when the root is on the 6th string ? Like when on 5th ?

    • @GodfreyGuitar
      @GodfreyGuitar 26 днів тому

      I prefer to keep the 3rds and 7ths on the 3rd and 4th strings as shown in this lesson for smoother voice leading. The bass notes jump around as you would hear in most bass lines, and the 3rds and 7ths resolve properly. This also helps to avoid chords sounding muddy (with too many low strings), but you can definitely play the 6th string root shell voicings as you described. The shapes will be the same, so they’re all easier to learn, but you sacrifice good voice leading.

      That’s a great video idea! It’ll be a few weeks before I can record a lesson for this. I’ll describe it here and add another comment when the lesson is ready so you can watch some examples. If you want to play 0-2-0, you would play the open string (0), hammer-on to 2, and then do a pull-off with the finger you hammered with to play “0” again. Here’s a lesson on hammer-ons if you need to learn about that. ua-cam.com/video/Ga4U2Jncvcc/v-deo.html I’ll do a video showing how to combine hammer-ons and pull-offs.
