TGA: Crown of Emara - Board Game Review
Thanks for the thorough overview and review! I own this but haven't played it yet.
I can not find setup rules for it. Do you replace old influence and gangster cards with expansion ones or just mix together?
A great review. Subscribed! P.S. Where did you disappear? Please come back..
I noticed that weirdly it says you have to beat the armour with your amount of successes in New Ways to Hunt. Might be a mistake seen as it isn't pointed out as a change. Decided to stay with meet or beat because it just feels wrong when rolling the printed number is a fail
Say when making a move (like your example of 1 making a move on 4) and is successful, does the gangster who got demoted still get their action phase? E.g orange has influence over thag ganster, a move is made on them they go back down to 1, do they get their action phase then?
No, the gangster demoted will not get to act that round.
What is your favorite color mat? The graphic design ones are pretty but distracts from the game.
For me, the gray one pictured in the video is my favorite. It works perfectly with my room and provides that premium look and function without being distracting.
I have come to dislike output randomness. It's more interesting when your decisions happen 100% of the time.
Hi Heikai, and thanks for commenting! I tend to agree with your sentiments on output randomness. I love dice as much as the next guy, but without a robust mitigation system it can be very frustrating to see the best laid plans go to waste. Most of my favorite games with combat have a strong deterministic element like default unit strength that is supplemented by card or dice play for a sprinkling of randomness.
It’s essentially unrealistic in battle to have complete control, or even much control. It’s more interesting to develop ways to work around limitations than to have no limitations. Dice outcomes are predictable in terms of percentage of success and playing is managing risk. All of that sense of simulation, creative problem solving and prioritizing choices is what makes it fun.
Dude! Do you know how hard it is to find a video about this game that actually states what’s wrong with it? It overstays its welcome, some poor choices of theme, art and component (board and the stars). I feel like the game designers did a great job but the publisher did not!! Great video and review!
Thank you so much for this. I’m playing 18Lilliput this weekend, as I start exploring 18XX games and your explanation has really helped me understand the rules and the game.
Thank you for review if you get new version and you have time please make review comparisons since your sort of not bias lol take care thanks gain!
I like the way you've organized your video and broke it down by sections. Makes for easy reference.
Good job.
Good explanation on how to play. Will use your video as an introduction for new players. Thanks.
I just saw this. Thanks kindly for the video! Great job. Wish you well on the Chanel
Hey have you seen the updated rules 2.0? It looks like a great update. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it after you have played it in video form. You can print out the rules and new cards on their website
I didn’t know there were 2.0 rules available but I’m very interested in checking them out. Can you provide a link to them? I couldn’t find them on the website but I may have just missed it. Thanks!
Always looking for good dexterity games. So far I have pitch car, meeple circus, and klask. I'll look into this one.
Love this game! Win or lose it's just fun if you play with the right people.
Hellos Riyahs dad
My biggest problem with Chinatown is the enormous amount of randomness/luck in the locations you get. Bad locations limit the agency you have as a player. The last couple of rounds also felt very calculable, but that’s not necessarily a big issue. I really have no desire to play this game again and can’t give it a higher rating than a 4/10.
Roel, definitely agree on the luck factor and calculable feel. If the group isn’t willing to trade and you get stuck with businesses/lots you cannot use it is not nearly as fun. Also last rounds are a bit tighter but unless everyone is budgeting perfectly there is still the potential for mistakes to be made. That’s where I think the most prolific deal makers can profit and capitalize which keeps me coming back. Very valid points though and thanks for sharing! Keep the comments coming!
Thanks for the tutorial by watching it I found out I made a few small errors. I only played the base game so far.
This is a really fun game, definitely on my top ten.
Looks more complicated than it is; I remember being a little intimidated when I first saw it. I wish the tracking board was more compartmentalized like the one in Dice Forge where everything is tracked individually. It's a small annoyance no big deal overall I really like this game.
When you encountered the red bear (9:10 mark) I understand why damage couldn't be applied and why your wagon couldn't be moved back but you did have resources so wouldn't you automatically have to pay a resource to get past the bear? The second question (12:35 mark) your regular meeple is in the cabin why would your other meeple collect two wood if that resource is on the brown track, doesn't this meeple only play on the green track? Or can the meeples play on any track when the other is in the cabin?
1) Can choose not to pay resources and take dame 2) Unfortunately, I momentarily had wrong worker on the track. Each worker can only ever go on their own track, even while other is in cabin. However, there is a cabin that allows one of the workers to leave their track but they weren’t in example. Good 👁
Will you do horror themed on the month of October? New to board gaming, AND my fave genre is horror. No pressure ofc. Currently watching the video!
Thanks for commenting William! A horror themed list is a great idea and I will definitely put something together come October, stay tuned!
Well done. La Cosa Nostra isn’t as lighthearted but is fun as well.
Thanks Jim, I’ll have to check that one out!
I think the train rush in the "Variant for professional gamers" (top of page 14) is somewhat more pronounced. I can recommend playing with it, if you haven't done so.
Roel, I’ll definitely have to try that next time, thanks for sharing!
My favourite description of this game for people who don't know the show is "it's basically wizard dodgeball" and that sums up the gameplay really well. It's combat-oriented but it's like... non-combat combat.
This looks cool. Why haven't we played this yet?
A few of these I haven't heard of and will have to look deeper into. My family and I thank you!
Really thorough and talked about some aspects I hadn't seen covered elsewhere. Appreciate it as I try to figure out what I'm buying from them!
Instead of cubes tiny birdhouses would've been cool.
I just want to say: great videos, and a very nice Bob Ross-like chillness in your voice. Also, I love that you don't have the obligatory ikea board-game shelves behind you. :) I do feel you can spice up your youtube-thumbnails a bit. Also, I was wondering: why is your channel called 'The Game Adjuster'? I had an idea once for a boardgame design channel where I'd go take old, dusty boring games and try to come up with ways to spice them up and take them into the current age of boardgame mechanics. When I read this channel title, I thought it would be something like that at first.
Thanks for the feedback Ru Nacken! Thumbnails, logo creation and overall presentation improvements are definitely high on my priority list. I’ve been researching editing programs and hoping to graduate from my current preference of iMovie soon. With regards to the channel name origins, my day job is in the insurance world as a “claims adjuster”. Adjusting claims requires one to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the claim to arrive at a final evaluation. A board game review is similar in many ways and I thought “The Games Adjuster” would be both a fun and clever nod to my trade. Great question!
Wingspan is definitely #1!
LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS GAME!
Great stuff! Thanks for the review. We look forward to seeing more videos.
Thanks for the response and keep up the great work in producing awesome games!
I have been buying a lot of board games lately and I always come across Wingspan. I just can't seem to commit. The colors and art style are amazing! I guess the theme and gameplay have kept me from buying it over the other games I bought. I like that you said it is a great family game. I have three young kids that I want to build a collection for when they are older. Hey, that's a good video idea; family games that a gamer parent would enjoy. Another great review. It's obvious you play a game a lot before you review. This game is on my shortlist.
Thanks for the comment Richmond! I completely understand your apprehension in purchasing this game. Like you, for months I was seeing how great the game was but just couldn’t bring myself to buy it. Eventually I caved and can happily say that Wingspan deserves all of the praise. I wouldn’t say it is in my top 40 games at this point but Wingspan does a great job of appealing to both families and more experienced gamers. Also, great idea on the Gamer Parent list and you’ve convinced me to record that soon, stay tuned……
@@thegamesadjuster2517 awesome! Looking forward to it.
One of my top 20 games for sure.
That was 🙋🏻♀️ I won! Great game and i'm not just saying that because I won. 😎
Nice video! Does this game play well at any player count?
Thanks for the comment Bruno! I have not tried the solo mode but the two, three and four player games all seem to work well. I would say three is probably best because there is enough competition for advisors/nobility cards but not so much that your plans gets ruined.
@@thegamesadjuster2517 ah, I see. It seems like a solid design. I am thinking about getting it to play with my partner. Thank you for replying!
Thanks for reviewing my game. This game has been out of print for a long time now, but people might be interested in a re-vamped version called Mob: Big Apple, published by TGG Games. This new game is not as dependent on the rolls and there are definitely more things happening, but it's core comes from Capo dei Capi. Here's a link to the Kickstarter for those interested (it funded a few months ago): www.kickstarter.com/projects/1244279178/mob-big-apple
Hey Dr. Finn! Thanks for the comment and recommendation. I’ll be sure to give Mob: Big Apple a look and keep up the great work!
I just bought 7wonders duel and clank! after your videos and others. Happy to expand my new hobby. What so you think of clank?
Great purchases Richmond! I like Clank but not in my personal collection because my brother actually has a copy. Base game of Clank was fun but does have the potential of a somewhat anticlimactic ending if someone dashes in and out very quickly. Fortunately, there are tons of new maps/cards with the expansions that add to variety so definitely a great starting point if you are looking to get into Deck-building. I’ve been thisclose to getting Clank! In Space! many times…
Devan did not win! ....just saying
Love this game! Great reviews too, keep them coming 😁
Based on your other games, I was not expecting to see stuff like 1830 and FCM on here, nice surprises. You reminded me I need to consider buying CW again lol.
Thanks Christian! I definitely consider myself an “omnigamer” and will try most any genre in search of a great game. Cthulhu Wars is awesome for sure!
Made my top ten games “we need to play” list. We reallllllly need to try this, been knocking that list out pretty fast but this one I haven’t got yet.
This game is currently my #1 favorite game!
Thanks for covering our game. We appreciate it. Glad to hear Oceans is well loved. :-)
It was 🙋🏻♀️, I won by ONE point! 😁
Looks like you’ve been on a roll lately pumping out content! Noticed a few pop up recently. I was starting to watch your top games list over lunch but was interrupted during it. This video popped up and reminded me I need to get back and watch. We’ve done several top tens on our channel but always hesitate at doing our top ten/top 50/top 100 overall games. Anyway, subscribed! Keep on keeping on.
Thank you so much for the subscription! Yeah, I figured doing a Top 40 would be a quick way of introducing my taste in gaming so folks know what to expect from the channel. Love you guys in the Favorite Game Friday’s from The Dice Tower with all the puns lol I’ll be sure to check out your channel too!
@@thegamesadjuster2517 thank you! And speaking of Favorite Game Friday, your number 1 was my pick for favorite combat game/mechanic on DT’s FGF. Good stuff!
Wow I was surprised CoH was even on your list, let alone so high! I am loving this game too! My wife played and even likes it!
Yes sir! Like I said, my list is more of a snapshot in time and recency bias certainly played a factor but I just love it! I’m still exploring the Elite Commanders and any war game my wife is willing to play with me automatically gets a boost lol
@@thegamesadjuster2517 I only played games like Catan and the games you buy at big box but because I played the video game so much it opened me up to the Kickstarter world of so many cool looking games. I would love a video on any future Kickstarters that you know will be a hit. Keep up the great work I can see your time and passion you put into it.
