Simple, clear guitar lessons, for beginners and beyond.
My mission is to empower you to play guitar and have fun - especially beginners.
I have always found most music lessons too complicated and not focused on practical playing. I have become the teacher I wish I had when I was starting out: simple, clear, PRACTICAL and effective.
This is a nurturing environment for new beginners. If you have a comment, please make sure it contributes to the learning of new beginners. This is your opportunity to give others a hand up. I will answer all enquiries. Trolls, however, will experience the biggest billy goat gruff.
There are two courses "How to Retire your Capo" and "Learn to Improvise Lead Guitar: The Chop Shop", plus several playlists of guitar lessons here.
Try the "For Beginners" playlist.
"Intro to Fingerstyle" is my own, approach to teaching fingerstyle in a very simple way.
Have fun!

This guy is Canadian music Royalty - or he should be! It's a beautiful song, and it's not super complicated, but the alternating chords take a little bit of practice. The song is very playable. Thank you boner guitar very helpful😊
You are very welcome! Keep on playing!
Thanks Bonar. Great lesson as usual. Much appreciated 👍🏽
You're welcome!
Something my cousin teached me way back, is that if i played the fift fret on e the E string and the A string vibrated, they were in tune to each other... But I never learned what E was supposed to sound like
It's very helpful to train your ears to learn the sound of every string. It's doable. It's really helpful. Try this lesson as a starting point. And thanks for visiting! ua-cam.com/users/shortsm6RMqLJOWBc?feature=shared
Jesus loves you all and wants a real and intimate relationship with you. Give him your heart and go all in for God. I can tell you from experience it’ll be the best decision you’ll ever make. God Bless!❤️🙏🏼✝️
I had no idea that was the case. Thanks Bonar!
You're welcome! Stay tuned! I am trying to release every day, if possible!
Guitars can't be " perfectly" tuned..!!
Well, in fact guitars can't be perfectly tuned for a variety of reasons. But this is a channel trying to help beginner guitarists. So I avoid discussing the specific limitations of the instrument because it is not helpful to a beginner.
I started with a tuning fork 55 yrs ago
I think it's a great way to tune, but it takes practice and it's hard to do in a noisy space.
Why the note A why not E or C
It is hard to be 100% sure, but the generally accepted idea is that A was chosen because all the stringed instruments had an "A" string, which made it possible for viola and violin and cello etc to all be tuned to the same standard. Important to remember that the whole issue of tuning standard emerged from the time when people began playing together - starting in early Renaissance and becoming very common around 1600.
Aren't the A in the B & E string in a different octave?
Yes they are!
Do you do requests? if so can you do a lesson for beginner it's a Johnny Cash version of 4 strong winds I cannot finger pick would love to see it with simple notes for intro Solo and outro and if possible, done in the D chord Thank you, Gary,
Yep, I take requests! I will do lesson for you asap. Within next couple weeks.
Thank You
I realize it may be more advanced than just using a tuner, but if possible, will you show how you can use natural harmonics to tune your guitar?! Thank you!!!
Yes! I have two short lessons already shot! I will edit and release both lessons in the next few days. Stay tuned! And thanks for visiting!
Can I help you grow your UA-cam channel?
No thanks
@bonarsmusic01 I will make you work for free for a week. If it pleases you then what you say will happen
Good advice, I’ve noticed that the pegs hold better when you tune down and then up that way to get in pitch.
Just grab the string itself and pull it.
Thanks
That DOES work too, but you can only say so much in one minute! Pull the string will go in "episode 2". Thanks!
Sorry, but snark has given me and a bunch of my colleagues too many problems to call it reliable. We prefer the d'addario clip on tuners. They're fantastic in every way! And they can be hidden pretty easily
Sorry to hear that. I am not endorsing Snark - I have had pretty good results with the Snark, although the plastic case desiccates and becomes brittle after a few years. I have not tried the D'Addario, but I will take your word for it. Maybe I should do a comparison of low-end clip on tuners. Any other ones I should look at?
I used a tyre valve cap to push the pin up from inside
Great idea!
Tap tap
Not sure I understand your comment.
The tuning fork was the first instrument I learned to play !
I have fond memories of it myself. And still enjoy it!
What guitar do you use and what strings, it sound really good.well done
The guitar is a Larrivee 03 series. They are very good, for an inexpensive guitar. I usually play Daddario ej116 phosphor bronze strings.
Can I get one at 432?

I play fingerstyle guitar.

@@benikepe yes. This is called "fingerstyle" guitar. I usually use my thumb plus two or three fingers on my right hand.

Ur vids always help me
That's why I do this!
I was horribly tone deaf as a kid but i never gave up music was my life and gradually my pitch is improving, i may not be the most talented but as long as i can sing how i want im happy
It's not a competition. As long as you are learning and enjoying making music, then you are doing it right! I am glad you haven't given up! And I am sure you have noticed, the more you work at it, the better it gets! Good for you!
ive always been able to identify pitch for as long as i can remember
That's awesome!
For me? Identify what note some of your favorite songs begin with. Play those songs on your instrument. If you can hear your favorite song starting when you hear a note, you know which note it is.
Great tip!
As a person with perfect pitch, you aren't born with perfect pitch, you develop it at a very young age when you play an instrument. In my case, I play the piano since I was 4 and when I hear a note, it seems like the note is speaking it's name.
Same, and I was able to learn 6 other instruments very easily with perfect pitch
Same here, with perfect pitch, learning instruments is easier
Absolute perfect pitch happens in development, relative perfect pitch can be trained
Yep
i think i have relative pitch
Very likely!
My problem is. when you pick a guitar string its change its pitch all the time: doiiinnnnggc. I t never sound straight tuned.
It's true: the intonation of the guitar and the changing timbre of the note as it decays makes it tricky. We do get better at it over time, but it takes work and persistence. Hang in there!
I was not born with perfect pitch, but I have been able to develop it over a few years. Thanks for sharing this video :)
I mean, everyone I know that has perfect pitch, developed perfect pitch. I haven't met anyone who's told me they had it since birth! It's clear that it is much easier to develop as a child, while your brain is more adaptable. It's waaay easier to learn a sense of short-term pitch memory and a strong knowledge of intervals. Like, you can learn in a year or 2, and be gig-ready in a matter of 5 years
I have actually met and worked with people who have had perfect pitch from infancy. It is a real thing, although rare. But as you point out, ear training is also real and very do-able, and very helpful! Thanks for the visit!
@@bonarsmusic01 The way it was described to me was that people with innate perfect pitch percieve and can identify a note's pitch in a similar way to how we see and identify colour - it's not something that requires thought. You just need to learn what notes are referred to as in Western equal temperement (the names of colours in this analogy). Where this diverges is the aural acuity in people with perfect pitch recognising sharp or flat notes; the colour analogy is less suitable in this respect.
@@ch4ndemic sounds like a good description.
Your all videos are very good. Keep uploading

@@bonarsmusic01 you make me wanna buy a guitar and practice!
@@rjbenson9621 Go fot it. Tons of great, cheap guitars out there. It's a great practice, it's calming and fun, and it helps reverse aging in the brain. You don't have to play Carnegie Hall. You can just have fun in your own basement. 🤘
Here are just two play your guitar every day second tip i got from eric Clapton put alcohol on your finger tip three times a day.- no charge
Thanks for the tips!
Me: tunes every string to A
It really works though it isn't physics, more like psychology and neuroscience. When you teach a subject it takes all of the pressure off of learning the subject and the brain stimulates different areas to make the teaching/learning process accessible. Much like when you raise your hand in class to answer a question, takes pressure away from the person who didn't get picked. I did a paper on this some 45 years ago for a PhD in psych, I mentioned this technique in my last comment on your site.
Well, in truth I only called it Physics because it is The Feynman Technique and Feynman IS one of the most celebrated Physicsts of our epoch. So, close enough. Thanks for visiting! Keep on rocking your guitar!
My dad taught me how to tune a guitar with this method since I was 10-11, im 34 now, and still doing it today!!!
It's a great way to practice listening carefully!
Fantastic advice!
Thanks! I use this myself! Really works!

I don't like it a lot but it's not bad
The issue for beginners is that it's so important to train your ears to recognize pitch. For beginners, I suggest working in 440 for a long while - until you really start to hear pitch with some accuracy. It's very hard to develop a great ear if you are switching back and forth from 440 to 432. This was a real problem in the 1700s and 1800s.
I'm so cooked, i didn't notice this while teaching myself how to play guitar, thank you kind Sir❤
Glad to help. There are lots of little tips here on the channel. Hope you find more useful nuggets. Thanks for visiting!
