The 9th Jhāna
In this teaching, Vince Fakhoury Horn explores the idea of a 9th jhāna, which is distinct from the first 8 jhānas described in early Buddhism. Unlike the earlier jhānas, the 9th jhāna focuses on resting in the 'isness' or 'suchness' of experience, without seeking to modify or alter it. Here, Vince offers a couple of instructions from different teachers on how to recognize the 9th jhāna, encouraging practitioners to stop seeking specific states and instead embrace the entirety of their experience.

A Tantric Approach to Working with Doubt
Переглядів 614 місяці тому
In this video, Vince Fakhoury Horn delves into a tantric approach to doubt, contrasting it with early Buddhist methods. While traditional Buddhist practices may advocate for countering doubt through precise investigation or simply saying “no” to it, Vince introduces a tantric method that embraces doubt. By expanding doubt to its fullest, we can transform it into a tool for awakening. Drawing on...
A Better Metric for Jhāna Practice
Переглядів 1579 місяців тому
In this talk Vince Fakhoury Horn outlines a more helpful metric for tracking the success of one's jhāna practice than how long one has meditated. Instead, we multiply the quality of one's practice (how well did it go?) by the quantity of practice (how long was it?). The result is a measure of our practice engagement. If you'd like to learn more about The Jhāna Community, where this video was ...

Thank you--this resonates. It's a refreshingly different take from nirodha samapatti as being a lights-out "state" championed by some (mainly Theravada) practitioners. As you say, cessation of feeling and perception--the fading away of the craving for experience to be different from what it is--is always available. It just needs to be recognized.

Wow, that is so ( provisionally 😊) validating and clarifying. Ive been groping to articulate that when sharing with fellow practitioners, wisdom and warmth of the sangha, who caution that samatha and vipassana are supposed to be kept distinct. Maybe they see something i don't yet understand, but in my current experience that would be an arbitrary imposition on how my mind works. Is this part of a longer talk? Thank you!
