I always thought the main beeping melody kind of sounded like something from a video game, but not really sure which one, like it could’ve been a track or melody from one of the Super Mario Lands on Game Boy. This accapella makes it so clear why yall confused thinking Kelly is on the second verse. 1) Beyoncé attacks the first verse in typical Beyonce fashion. Spitfire, ferocious, and riding the scales. However the second verse is much simpler melodically. Less play with time signature, and less varied melodically on the scale. It sounds more like Kelly’s style and it probably was originally her verse. 2) It’s obvious verse 1 and verse 2 were not recorded in the same session on the same mic and/or were mixed quite differently. The mix on the second verse brings up the mids and has more compression and ultimately sounds more muffled than the first verse. This makes Beyoncé tone sound more “rich”. That and she might even have had a cold or just laid this as a scratch vocal and rolled with it. This was not probably done by choice but a quick decision for Beyoncé to get in the studio and make both verses hers for the sake of placing a solo single to coincide with promotional obligations for the pink panther soundtrack.
