Make your pot sip even more sufficient by drilling holes into your cone posts that will fill up with even more water as this is the primary mission.

Most plants will grow certain types of roots down into that water. And it's good for them. They like it. Also you could put rocks in the bottom.

Your video on the topic is the best. You’re also the only one that introduces the air layer above the water line to separate roots/soil from the bottom water reservoir. As a MS Office power user over the decades, I appreciate your diagram so much! Tell, then show, is always the teaching method that works the best. Thank you!

Great vid dude. Gonna do some like that. I have a few with nested 5 gallon buckets and they work GREAT! On your fill pipe, try a couple 45s and a reducer at the top to act as a "funnel". Then cap it. The offset and reducer make them much easier to fill once they start bushing out.

Great video, thanks much for sharing. Question: Can this method be used for houseplants as well? Despite following directions, is there still a possibility of a plant getting too much water?

Have you used this longer term? I did a similar wicking planter for indoors-out of a liter bottle and the cotton "wicks" rot and break off at the water line. I did not try using something else like nylon... (?).

Comments for this “gold standard”video made me chuckle. Who really needs CAD presentation to understand a bucket with lid, a piece of PVC and a t-shirt? Also, if I see someone use a drill to make a hole and a saw to cut things I can pretty well figure out that I will need a drill and a saw without the exhaustive list of every tool I will need before then showing use of the tools. For those clicking on “how to make a self watering planter” because they just want to know how to make it, skip the first 10 minutes. Oh, and you may use regular plants, not necessarily “organic,” because you will never detect any difference. I am baffled at people thinking a great video is one taking about 14 minutes to show what should’ve been demonstrated in four minutes or less. To be fair, the relatively few minutes actually showing the build are fine.
