All Star factions are fun. I never got why they gave Geeks 2 cards in the deck, though. Not that there wouldn't have been a lot of stuff to choose from. Was it really just to have 1 minion and 1 action from each set and treating Geeks as a 1 deck set? World Champs were able to do this with far less factions, without overrepresenting a faction over others. For this reason, I swapped Non-Infinite Loop in my revised All Star deck with Swashbuckling. This gives the core set 1 more representation as it is the largest set and prevents overrepresentation of Geeks. As the cherry on the cake, I also gave them a titan: Big Funny Giant to give them 4 total cards from the core set. While both cards do not provide the biggest value for them, BFG helps with their theme of getting the best cards fast (and probably first), so the stall tactics from BFG could somewhat help. And Swashbuckling is a good utility action. Of course, it isn't the 1 minion and 1 action from split from each set but I think a titan is good enough. Of course, Geeks only have 1 card left now but I think as they are only 1 deck, it's fair. I focused more on set representation than the deck representation. I wanted to do a Munchkin All Stars deck but with only 8 factions this would leave me with 16 cards (2 from each). So I would be forced to use 4 factions thrice. Not ideal. Regarding your All Stars 2.0: I would give them neither minion from the Cthulhu set, both have more interesting actions that you could choose. Field Trip would be a great action to use in such a deck. New Acolytes is a good pick, though. If you want to stick to the 1:1 split, then you're screwed as just neither of the minions works without the proper context (I think the only option then would be to combine Recruitment and either Professor or Psychologist). I think the selection of 2s in this one is terrible, except Flock. But considering the choices you had, this was expected.

Super random question- great video by the way. I literally just jumped into smash up due to finding a copy of Marvel Smash Up with a great deal. After watching your video I am leaning toward the Culture Shock or just the Base Game - I don't need to own everyone maybe just one more expansion or addition, at the most having 3. What do you recommend, with variety, value and fun being my top priorities?

Just played this game with the fam in like 3 years and forgot how fun it is. My zombie dinosaur team destroyed.

Pretty interesting faction! I especially like how its actions advance its own game plan while still allowing to be played as a decent support for other factions. I don't think the Rude Awakening interaction is a problem at all, to be honest: the setup required to achieve it is quite specific and difficult (you need all five pieces of Exodia in hand, plus Rude Awakening itself) and because Exodia doesn't gain its talent back before your turn, it means you've just dropped 15 power on a base without breaking it (otherwise you're losing the combo obviously), which would leave it wide open for your opponent(s) to break it themselves and take away your combo. This is made even worse by the fact that the faction has no recursion, meaning getting all five pieces into your discard pile is pretty much a death sentence. Considering all of that, the interaction just seems like a cool alternate way to summon Exodia that really isn't that overpowered.

Any tier list that has zombies as the 6th best faction just doesn't understand the game

There's zombies and robots and then there's everybody else. All the other factions have their pros and cons (with some certainyl being better than others) but those two factions can just dominate often regardless of who they're paired with. One of the reasons I honestly can't play the game anymore just because it is just too unbalanced

A note on frozen. You don't have to go through the whole minion chain, it's just there. U can start with Anna and go right to Elsa. Later play Kristoff to get Anna back to get Elsa, or just recur Anna or Elsa directly etc.

I think that they should eventually stop making new factions cus we are running out of room in the bigger geekier box. I think they can still make money by doing reprints of factions that didn’t age well.

This factions gonna get even better with the granny Titan. 😂 Granny/time travelers + The granny Titan will be a broken combo.

Omg, seriously agree. 😢 I wish they provided a good way to keep track of the power on a base card but I don’t like the mats cus they don’t provide flexibility cus the bases have fixed spots on the mat. I like being able to move the bases around as needed. Also, the mats only have spaces for 5 bases but some game plays have more than 5 bases when using certain factions. The mats are just bulky and awful. Im a completionist that has bought everything smash up has to offer but those mats are so useless and bulky that I refuse to buy them. They need to add an expansion or something that provides these things. The reason why so many factions? $$$ although, I’m starting to run out of space in my bigger geekier box. And having another bigger box seems overkill.... it’s kinda already at a point where it’s hard to lug the thing around. If they do add a biggest geekiest box... it better stop there 🛑

You got it all spot on lol. Can’t say anything. Although, now that I think about it, I like 4 players best. I’ve done 5 sometimes but avoid anything more than that. 3-4 I think are the sweet points of the game. 2 is not enough, it makes a lot of game mechanics less useful and less fun imo, plus puts too much pressure on me when I just want to relax and have fun and talk with friends. And 5+ players causes too much waiting and causes too many variables until your turn pops up. I feel like I have no real control in a 5+ game and find that winning gets regulated to luck and chance. Anyway, ever tried a 2 vs 2 game? Or a 3 v 3 game? Or a 2v2v2 Game? It makes for an interesting game.

I agree with the munchkin. It’s not necessary. It over complicates the game with the extra treasure and monster cards. It’s also not good for beginners... it’s definitely only for ppl who are completionists. If I was to suggest a buying order, I’d suggest it to be the last one anyone buys. However, There are a few factions in it that don’t need the treasure and monster decks to work well. Treasure cards, monster cards, madness cards, Titan cards, and dueling over complicates this game. It’s the reason those particular factions usually fall in not necessary. Although, the two you put in wait for sale are definitely the better of the lot. Simplicity and smoothness of play is definitely more universally friendly. I very much agree with your list. Thanx for sharing. Although, I would change bigger geekier box to minimum requirements because anyone looking to buy minimum requirement expansions and up, plus have space for future smash up expansions, will find the bigger geekier box very useful to store all the factions. Even just buying only the good addition and essential, will find the box is still useful. Again, thank you for sharing, this will probably be very helpful for new players to decide what to buy first.

Very controversial. Both Disney and Marvel are both - at best - not necessary as an expansion. Might be good as standalone games, but not as expansions. My list would look like this (Europe based player): Essential: Core Set (hasn't aged well but the factions are so iconic that they are a must), AL9000 (somewhat outdated and thematically mismatched but still decent mechanics), World Tour I+II (the opposite end, very polished mechanics, good thematically connected set overall) Good addition: OYdia (overall solid factions. Vikings are a bit meh, though), Sci-Fi (carried by the Shapeshifters and the Cyborg Apes), 70s (easy to play and accessible factions) Minimum requirements: It's your fault (very swingy balance levels, not that great overall), Cease and Desist (that's mostly theme over substance), Pretty Pretty (swingy balance levels, Cats are the most swingy faction, Horses BL OP), WWWT (Grannies are a failure, Rockstars are too strong, Explorers are fine, Teddys nothing special), Monster Smash (got 3 Titans - any more questions?) Wait for Sale: Big in Japan, Cthulhu, Munchkin (all of them are very special, but at least they fit into the game; Munchkin is the weakest out of them) Not necessary: Marvel, Disney, BGB, Single Factions (BGB and the Singles mostly for the cost; Marvel and Disney as said) Special Case: Titan Pack. That's basically essential when you have a lot of the sets they add Titans to. It's a must when you have the Cthulhu and Monster Set, probably also when you have the Core set. Otherwise, you don't need it at all. Also, their power levels are really inconsistent. While some are overpowered, others are mostly pointless.

Thanks for sharing! It looks like a fun faction. I have been hesitant to utilize the box in my customs because of the potential to lock an opponent out of the game, but it looks like you have capitalized on putting your own cards in the box with just one card that can box an opponent card. It seems that you avoided the game-lock issue rather well. Kudos! Now the only stone unturned would be rifling through all the factions to see what can be done with a thin deck (time walk?). Nice job, and I'm glad the channel is still alive :)

These look great - the box is definitely an underused mechanic in Smash Up! Love the theming and you’ve done a great job with the card design/art choices. I’ve recently gotten into making custom factions as well, and I’m working on a Brewers faction that revolves around the box. The idea is that you “brew a perfect deck” by removing unneeded cards to thin your deck and then you have a few effects that shuffle your discard pile back into your deck. Different take on recursion. Cool to see you using that mechanic as well!

to me as it is now it doesnt seem like its important enough that its the box and it could easily be the discard pile or discard pile to deck. Id say just adding more payoff for when you put stuff into the box like Confederate does, and cards that get payoff based on stuff in the box like The Prestige. I could see something like "gain x power for each card you have in the box, up to Y" or "Play an extra minion with power equal to or less than a minion you have in the box" or other similar type stuff. Magician may remove the importance of it being the Box as well. Maybe if it On play let you retrieve a card from the box, then had a different talent.

I normally do not like costum factions that much, since I find them a little underdeveloped from time to time (there are exceptions of course) I especially do not like when new things are added to the game such as new rules/ new decks new mechanics that are not properly explained. This is definitely different! You take an underdeveloped concept of smash up and make it clear! I especially like the power 2 with its wording special/ongoing! This is so creative and good.... It's not even feels overpowered Well done 👍

One of the best combo I know is Grannies with Time Travelers. All you need to do is to get these cards as quick as possible: Time Walk, Nana, Family Reunion, and any one minion. Also if you prepare as more actions as possible that can replay card is better. Time Walk first, then play Family Reunion on a base, play any one minion there except Nana and Doctor When(for taking Time Walk back to the top of the deck), and then play a Nana there. Nana will play the top card of your deck which is Time Walk → Time Walk put itself on the bottom of the deck → Family Reunion make Time Walk back to the top of the deck from the bottom. Now, because of Time Walk, you can play an extra minion and an extra action, and it's time to replay it. 2 other Nana(play Time Walk and put it back to the top), Do Over!(to replay Nana), Doctor When(to replay Nana, but Doctor When needs to be played at another base), It’s Astounding(to replay Do Over!), Granny’s Purse(to play Time Walk, but need another minion to make Time walk back to the top) → These only cost a minion/action play to play Time Walk (then get 1 minion and 1 action play). There are totally 8 cards can do that. Into the Time Slip(to replay Nana), Attic Treasures(draw Time Walk to play it). → These cost 2 card play to play Time walk. There are totally 4 cards can do that. Fainally, Knitting Circle can draw card by destroying Don’t Mess With My Babies! or other players' actions , Repeater Perfect and Time Raider can recycle Do Over!...etc. Each time you play Time Walk, you also draw 2 cards, replay it 8~12 times, then you will draw at least 16~24 cards and get 8~12 extra minion and action plays which only use 3~5 minion play and 5~7 action play. In addition to, if you shuffle your deck because of drawing all your deck, you may replay them again and again. In my experience, I draw all of the cards except one action in the discard pile(used to play Time Walk or just Time Walk itself), and can play all my 20 minions to the bases. If you do well, the only thing can stop you is that you have no minion can play to score the bases. It's possible to win 3 bases at one time (with your totally 20 minion 60 power). Even if you don't win yet, Always Room at Granny’s and Chicken Soup can make you do the combo again fast.

I was expecting you to pair the Geeks with the Aliens for the cosplay invader combination.

First of all, yeah, this video has been out for a while and I'm finally commenting. I have enjoyed them so much that I have watched them more than once, so thank you for creating such engaging content. It kind of bothers me that you guys didn't take faction context into account for monarch and professor, but took the faction context into account when it came to invader. Invader in dinos, tricksters, wizards, ninjas, etc is not really that great (it's definitely good!). There are only a few factions that would get "best card in smash up" value with invader in it. However, my argument is not to put invader down because I think faction context should always be weighed. Rather, other cards should have been regarded in a similar way to how invader was gauged.

You need another category. Synergy and how they support other factions. Smashing up 2 factions is the name of the game and synergy should factor into each factions ratings. This would bring zombies and wizards up a couple tiers where they belong.

I'm a Smash Up completionist, but here is where I differ from your list. In my opinion, Science Fiction Double Feature is the absolute worst expansion, and contains the absolute worst faction in the entire game (Time Travelers). If I were to pass on any set, it would be that one. Cthulhu is absolutely necessary, and goes even better with the Titans kit. While I personally like World Tour 2 (Culture Shock) and had the pleasure of playtesting it, I would not put it in "Essential." It contains some of the more advanced factions in the entire game. If I were playing with someone who is brand new, I would not have them play with Russian Fairy Tales, as it should only be played by experienced players. As for the four single promo factions, I suggest lobbying AEG to make them available as a set. I got my Penguins, Goblins and Knights of the Round Table for free as a thank you for playtesting (the fact that I'm American plays a bit in availability as well). By the way, Goblins require a coin to play with, and Knights utilize actions as quests. Lastly, for me the Titans are mandatory.

This is a really interesting list. I would probably make a distinction with "first purchase" being a 8 faction set. All you can do with a four or even 5 faction expansion by itself is play a 1v1 game. For this reason alone, I would have either marvel or the core game in the essential category. Personally, I think the core needs a little more love. It's a classic and many of its factions are really good. It's also simple for beginners (if marvel were made first I would probably pick it since everything might be modifiers etc.). I'm surprised Big in Japan got demoted so far for its complexity when culture shock got away relatively unscathed. I feel the same about culture shock as you though. It is a little more complicated but has so many good factions (definitely one of the best releases). On another note, thanks for making another video. I was beginning to worry that you had wandered off to another interest or something.

I’d definitely put the core set in essential - I agree with Robert that wizards are actually pretty dang good still, and dinosaurs are so fun and thematic they’re still a good one to have, plus they’re great for teaching new players. Tricksters are the only one I really don’t like from the core set - and 1/8 is not bad. I definitely agree that a redesign would be awesome though, although I think they should just buff the bad factions and not nerf the good ones because if they nerf the good ones, people will probably just keep playing the old versions of those.

why do you think wizards havent held up? From what ive seen, almost every tier list including mine, puts them still atleast high tier all the way up to borderline OP. I know its not the topic of this vid but Just something I had to ask about.

I’ve been playing Ancient Incas a lot recently and they’ve quickly become one of my favorites too. It took me a sec to realize that you can actually use Child of the Sun’s ability multiple times a turn, and when you combine that with golden condor this faction’s 2+ base-breaking potential is incredible.

Hello! I really like this channel! I think that the Best cards I smash up series was a blast especially the WORST card special episode! I took a look back through that series and noticed that there were very few power 2 minions represented, and I think that makes sense when you look for the SINGLE best card! However if looking for the best card and considers the copy number, the power 2s are actually contributing more in terms of power! I would really like to see a best card in smash up episode with only power 2 minions (or maybe more precisely from the power 2 tier to include cub scout, moai, huffie)
