A podcast where each week we will be discussing the first televised episode of various sitcoms from over the years.
The S1E1 Podcast | Episode 192: Hardball
"Hardball" was a 1994 sitcom that aired on Fox. The show centered around the Pioneers, a fictional American League baseball team struggling to stay out of last place. Hardball was originally intended to be released along side of that year's World Series but a real life MLB strike prevented that from happening and instead become part of the first FOX NFL Sunday.
Despite coming off the heels of multiple successful baseball movies and the show's ensemble cast which featured Mike Starr, Bruce Greenwood, and a very young Joe Rogan (in his first acting credit). Hardball was canceled after only 7 episodes. Many contribute the timing of the strike to being a factor behind the show's low viewership. 30 years later will the S1E1 crew call this one a homerun or will it strike out? Listen as they deep dive the pilot episode.

Martin very iconic show. The first half of season 1 had monologue segments then they cut it.
The Wayans Bros sitcom gets better after the 2nd half of season 2. Once Anna Maria Harsford joined the cast it’s a whole better. Seasons 3-5 has the best and funniest episodes.
Casper Jackson makes me cry laugh whenever it comes up on the pod
I like onions on pizza
Heads up this is the How I Met Your Mother episode
The US version is also great. (And they can smell. It’s the only way they can enjoy food unless someone dies with food on them.)
Another little bit of trivia for you..... The reason why this episode was aired first was because the episode originally intended to be the first ("Lucy Thinks Ricky Is Trying To Murder Her") had some technical issues. The 3 camera technique that was pioneered for I Love Lucy by Desi and the team, actually started with 4 cameras for the first episode filmed. This complicated filming and editing among other things so they decided to simplify down to 3 cameras onwards. As a result of the issues, they delayed broadcast of that episode and aired the one you're reviewing first instead :)
No introductions, no tag lines, no names, no clue who these people are what they're talking about. Ever hear of hashtags? 😂
Hey! I think maybe you didn't listen far enough into the episode. All of our episodes start with a quick, goofy teaser that usually isn't longer than a minute or so. After the teaser we get into the introductions etc.. Thanks for listening!
Talking of anger and rage, it’s not quite the same, but in season 3 episode 8, Bobcat Goldthwait appears as Jealousy. Also, Yeardley Smith’s first name is pronounced “Yard-Lee”
I watched all of the episodes on YT
Yo man props to you posting consistently. Joe Rogan said “try and find Grace Under Fire somewhere” and if it were just a little different..
stil no DVD release, nor any streamers
Your points about the rent cost of monicas apartment make me think that she owns the apartment as opposed to renting it. Unless they specify rent going to a landlord i would presume the rent, if mentioned, would be from a lodger to the owner that they live with.
Having listened to 90% of this episode, I've come to the conclusion that you need a guest participant from the UK to help you with context.
'Tudor is English!' Never say that in Wales, you will die
You've mentioned Shakespeare in the bit I've listened to so far, upstart crow is a recent BBC comedy in the same format of blackadder, written by Ben Elton who wrote blackadder from season 2 onwards and his influence made it better
I'm British and the first series of Blackadder is the worst of the four. You could argue that each series is a standalone show in the same way that American horror story is a new story each season Although this is the first of these I've 'watched', I get your premise but maybe exceptions can be made for this scenario
Great show but this one was very quiet had to crank the volume
Sorry about that! Not sure what happened to cause the lower volume, but we do take the way we sound seriously, so thanks for the heads up. We'll make sure it doesn't happen again. Thanks for tuning in!
My God i miss you guys 😂
Update: I gave this the greenlight
I remember our teacher had us watch this in class to teach us how to understand comedy.
That’s really interesting. What class what that?
@@S1E1Pod It was actually my middle school reading class.
I love your podcast. I was wondering if you guys can cover the Threes Company pilot of one these times since Suzanne Somers recently passed away Thanks
Thank you so much for the kind words. Threes Company is definitely on the list.
In 2024 it will be 30 years since Friends first aired. Could it * be * any older?
let me guest
This is one of my favorite sitcoms of all time. It was so disappointing because I think if it was that funny during it's first two seasons, imagine if it'd been given more time!
1st
First time listener here! Loved this episode! I can't wait to listen to all the other episodes of the sitcoms I know😊 keep it up guys!

HAHA one year later and all you need to be verified on Twitter is $9.99 a month😂
But now we need that gold check mark tho 👀
I'm all about the "Friends for too long" podcast
Cool episode - thanks
You’re welcome, thanks for listening!
Good episode, both the show but also your podcast episode. also speaking of Katy Mixon, I´d like to hear you make a episode around the pilots of American Housewife and an episode about the pilot of The thing about Pam, personally I was very mixed on the tone of The thing about Pam.
We will definitely discuss this and add them to the list. Thank you for listening, and stay tuned...
@@S1E1Pod Oh thats cool, looking forward to that, also I will mention a few tidbits about The thing about Pam regarding tone and a few facts to keep in mind before watching...maybe. And some of my thoughts about American Housewife, tho don´t read that before watching, after is better not to get spoiled too much, also I do mention size a lot, but really the show is so much more than just Katies size focus. Regarding The thing about Pam, its got a dark humor thats also too morbid for some people given the realness and thats its based on real people, also side facts Renee Zellweger was wearing a bunch of prosthetics and a fat suit to portray Pam Hupp and Katy Mixon was in some scenes wearing facial prosthetics, sometimes a bald cap and sometimes a wig in her portrail of Betsy Faria. Regarding American Housewife, not really a spoiler but one of the main subjects is weight and self narration so to speak, there is a lot of focus on how fat Katie Otto is in the self narration, which in hingsight is maybe weird, because Katy Mixon who portrays the lead is on the thick side, but not as big as the self narration leads on, that could be because of the characters insecurities, should be noted that as the show goes on weight fills less and less as she gets less insecure about her size, in the last season its not even brought up, even tho Katy is a lot heavier by then. side note great to see Katy Mixon not being bothered with others (online and Media) focus on her weight, she rocks at every size so to speak.
Oh, that's really cool, thank you for that bit of information! I will definitely share that with the guys!
@@S1E1Pod thanks, also I just tealised The thing about Pam is not a sitcom, does that disqualify it from being an episode topic for your podcast?
The beard on these guys are amazing
The first dude couldn’t believe it💀
He was shook
He considered it
LOL this made my day
Glad we can be of service 👍
You guys should check out Abbott Elementary, it stars the kid from this show. He's still very much a great comedy actor.
I am going to write that down and suggest it to the guys. Stay Tuned...
I did enjoy the show, but it's nothing compared to Golden Girls. Something was lost in this one, and it's Bea Arthur.
100% She made Golden Girls, well... Golden Girls. Not that this show is bad, but it isn't the same.
One off my new favorite shows tanks to S1E1. I can't recommend this episode enough. 😊
Thank You!
This episode title is a giant fallacy, everyone loves Chris!!!
