"Canta's Warning" - Piano
My first named melody :) I made it for a scene in an imaginary world my sister and I came up with about 7 years ago. We have been playing it ever since and it has evolved as we got older.
I'll think about adding the scene details, but I feel like it might make no sense if I write it here :D

White Chinese geese mating
Переглядів 429 тис.3 роки тому
These geese are coming up on 4 months old. That's an incredibly early time for geese to mate, but perhaps it's because it's high summer (July) and these were from an early hatch (March). Can't wait to see eggs, but that probably won't happen till Fall at least!

Air bubble in developing egg?

    Hi, I am hatching chicken eggs and I noticed an air bubble in the eggs before incubation, it is day 4 now and I cannot see any veins yet (not sure if its to early) but the air bubble is in 5 out of 6 eggs and they seem quite liquidy to (yolk moves quite quick when turning slowly) . should i replace the eggs or should i wait a few more days to see if anything devolopes? thanks

    My Rhode Island Red has started doing the head shaking. I have a flock of 9, (6 are Barred Rocks, 1 a Mutt Rooster and 1 a Mutt Hen;). I love them to life. They are all about 7 months old. My Rhode Island Red laid a large egg yesterday. I noticed after that, she completely stopped eating and drinking. She would just go to the corner of the run and look out. I stayed with them all day yesterday. I could pick her up anytime I wanted to, very unusual. Late yesterday, I put the top of a large rabbit cage in the run and put her inside. I gave her some plain Greek yogurt and she ate like she was starving, about 5 bites and then stopped. I took some chicken food and mixed it with water and made a paste, she ate about 10 bites. I put more water in the food and made soup, she ate a lot. I took her out of the cage and let her roost with the others. I was so scared to open the coop this morning, but, she’s fine, I think. She laid an egg this morning, back to the normal size. The only thing is now the head shake and a little open mouth breathing. I have checked everything that could be checked if it’s on utube and I would have to skin her to check anything else. She has had a good utube check up. The head shaking is different than just the (I hear something). It’s more like the video. I am thankful for finding this site and all the conversations between everyone. I feel much better now. I spent all day yesterday on utube and this is the first time that I’ve looked today. I can’t believe that I found something that I didn’t find yesterday. Thank you everyone. I think we should turn this into a book. 😊

      I tried hatching a few with the air bubbles but they didn't make it (died around day ~12 if I recall correctly). Possibly because the shell was too porous and allowed bacteria in, or maybe because there was no internal membrane which would have interfered with blood vessel development.

    So glad I found your video. Here's my story- 3 weeks ago, I bought 2 bantam roosters. I've had them in the house the entire time (weather, and taming them down.) When I first saw them, and was talking to the gentleman I bought them from, they did the head flicking/shaking, just like yours are doing in the video. He'd never seen them do that. In the past few weeks I noticed them doing it periodically, but figured it was some kind of nervous response. Today, the one was doing it constantly. After reading the comment about responding to your voice, I realized that I had a television program on, with heavy narration by a British woman. I paused it. Guess what. The flicking/shaking stopped; program on, flicking started; off, stopped. Then, I would talk to them. Flicking started. I thought maybe it was the pitch of my voice, but when I tried a low voice, they still flicked. I've concluded that it is "voice activated" and nothing to be concerned about. I've also learned, after 12 years of raising chickens, that chickens do occasionally yawn, and it doesn't mean they have gapeworm. ;) Thanks for the video and the update. My boys are now nodding off, in welcomed silence. LOLOL!!!

    Is air bubble harmful for the baby ?

    • @mariebethell7517
      @mariebethell7517 2 роки тому

      I think they are, because none of the eggs with these bubbles ever hatched. The shell was also very porous, probably allowing bacteria to kill the embryo easily.

    This reply is a few months late, but based on what I’m seeing, the chickens look like they are responding to your voice. Interestingly, I’ve noticed this phenomenon with any tame birds, and first saw it in a pet parakeet. Then I began to see it in other birds I’ve had over the years. Each time I’d speak to them, they’d shake their head. Shaking of course, could be caused by other things, but your hens look exactly like birds I’ve had. Unless you’ve already discovered the cause, test out the idea by speaking to the them. That should instantly elicit a head shake. It’s really interesting and I’ve never figured out why they do this.

    Hello. I am glad i found this video because my birds are doing the exact same thing. I have dealt with mites before so i knew how to treat them for that. Ive been treating them with DE and woodash for a couple weeks. I was never able to ever see any lice or mites on them at all. There feathers are in perfect condition and they were not pulling or scratching themselves. Just every once and awhile they would shake their heads. The next thing i thought was that they are growing their fall feathers. I would think that would be a bit annoying to them, perhaps causing them to shake their head. I butchered 4 of my roosters and wasnt able to find any mites, lice, no signs of feather pulling. They had nice clean feathers. Once thing i noticed was skin cells like they had some bird dandruff going on. My birds are doing what the birds in the video are doing. I think perhaps its normal but i would hate to think im not doing enough for them.

      Is head shaking the only symptom? Check down his throat for gapeworm, white patches or other abnormalities. There is a forum called backyardchickens.com, I highly recommend creating an account there immediately and posting a thread about your chicken in the "Emergencies / Injuires / Diseases and Cures" section. Here is a link: www.backyardchickens.com/forums/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures.10/ There are people far more experienced and helpful than I who will help you there. Be sure to include as much information as you can -- a video would be especially helpful.

    My 1 year old Barred Rocks just started this and the occasionally gaping. I’ve treated for gapeworm, and the gaping has reduced. Second dose tomorrow, but they’re still shaking their head a good bit. So stressful.

    • @mariebethell7517
      @mariebethell7517 3 роки тому

      Hey Kyle! Did you look down their throats for gapeworm? I'm sure you already know this, but gapeworm looks like a Y and will be visible at the back of the throats. You can also send a sample to your state lab or a willing veterinarian to run a fecal test for confirmation. Occasional yawning (not continuous gaping) is normal, as is shaking of the head.

    • @Kyle-it9zj
      @Kyle-it9zj 3 роки тому

      @@mariebethell7517 I have. There’s nothing visible. I decided to do the deworming for good measure, but I also started my girls on Denagard and I’m noticing improvements. The head shaking has reduced 60-70%, comb color is more consistent, poop is no longer runny, and I haven’t seen the outstretched neck gaping nearly as much. I lost a hen back in March and I had my suspicions it was CRD. However, it was my first time encountering it and not all the symptoms were present. Three more days of Denagard and I’m hoping we’re past this. I’ll just end up doing a preventive dose monthly.

    • @mariebethell7517
      @mariebethell7517 3 роки тому

      @@Kyle-it9zj Hmmm... What were the symptoms of the hen you lost back in March? What you're describing in your flock now sounds more like worms than CRD... perhaps capillary worms. Since you're treating for both at the same time it's hard to tell what medication is having more affect. Glad to hear your hens are getting better though. If you lose anymore, definitely consider sending one in to your state lab for necropsy and testing. They will test for MG as well as all species of worms that affect chickens. Or consider doing a necropsy yourself. While it won't have potentially needed labaratory testing, you might be able to see worms if that is what you're dealing with. Wishing the best to you and your flock :)

      @@mariebethell7517 The hen I lost initially started occasionally sneezing back in November. I treated with VetRX and the symptoms subsided. Then in February the sneezing started again and she’d occasionally gape her beak. A few days later she was wheezing and railing. I started treating her for gapeworm with Safeguard, but her symptoms only continued. Her crop was fine, no visible worms, but I didn’t notice some purple lines on her tongue. Then her comb got real dark and she stopped eating. I fed her wet mash for two days and she’d gradually eat some. Kept a heat lamp about her cage to keep the temp up around 87. This all during the time I’m waiting for antibiotics to arrive. She laid eggs every day up until her last, which is so weird. Unfortunately she ended up dying in my arms. I’m amazed she lasted as long as she did as quickly as it accelerated. The only other thing I noticed hindsight is a photo a few days before death she had some swelling in her face, but very mild. The only thing I can figure is if it really was worms. My remaining girls seem to be responding well. I haven’t noticed any gaping; just mouth breathing from the heat. I went ahead and sanitized their coop again today to kill of any bacteria and changed their bedding over to hemp since it’s lower dust than pine. Lord willing this takes care of it.

      @mariebethell7517 3 роки тому

      Hey Carlos! "Someone told you" or did you read it on a forum thread - a thread I think I've seen but can't pull up the link. There are 7 species of Coccidia that infect chickens but all of them live in the intestine, so it's unlikely that they would cause head shaking (a symptom usually resulting from irritation in the ear, throat or neurological condition). Unless you are seeing the typical symptoms of coccidiosis (which are paleness, assuming a hunched position, blood in the stool and others) it's probably not it. I would wait and see if your chickens develop any other symptoms. If not, it's probably normal!

      Yes! I meant to make a video update, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I wound up submitting 2 birds for necropsy and testing to the UC Davis lab. The pathologists there didn't find anything other than some mild intestinal necrosis (one of them was stunted) and some lymphocytal infiltrates, again very mild and not unusual. I decided to send them this video to help with further diagnosis, and after consulting some experts in poultry behavior, they concluded it was normal! However, I would still recommend checking your flock over for external parasites (such as mites) and looking carefully into their ears. I wouldn't worry about it if head shaking is the only symptom, but if you start seeing other issues it may be worth investigating further.

      No, none of them died. I sent them for testing due to preemptive concern, since I have just begun upscaling my breeding operation and wanted to catch anything potentially dangerous early. What I have noticed is that some birds (in particular one of my Buff Orpington roosters and his offspring) seem to shake their heads more than others, and some hardly shake at all. My younger flock, which makes up most of the population, seems to have improved, though I still see the occasional twitch often accompanied by head scratching.

    Looks very fun. Just be careful. Lol my great uncle Chuckie did something similar yet much more hilarious sometime back in the late 1970s on the family farm he was born and raised on. Him and a bunch of his friends and his older brothers and sisters (sadly most have passed on now) were drinking and partying all evening. And as a prank, uncle Chuckie rigged up an oil furnace ignitor hooked to a lamp socket in the shop where all the farm equipment gets repaired, and filled two balloons with oxygen and acetylene from the cutting torch in the shop. When it got dark, Chuckie stood outside and asked his older brother, "can you please grab me a Budweiser out of the fridge in the shop, he said yes, walks in , turns the light switch on and it literally blew out all the light bulbs and the window at the back of the shop, and Chuckie just stood there almost passed out from laughing so hard.
