Handling Parental Interference: Insights for Youth Basketball Coaches
I stop watching when he said No Zone. Don’t you think European don’t play a lot of zone & match up defense?
For young players I try to organize my trainings into speed-of-drill blocks for youth players. They often (especially in Europe) badly need basic moves, ball handling, footwork and dribbling concepts, which need to be guided, controlled, and specific ("You control the ball, the ball doesn't control you"). These are often slow, but highly beneficial. A lot of coaches here are afraid to run anything slow at all, emphasizing only activity and running as the visual appearance of "progress", which actually leads to a lack of control, precision, details, and fundamentals. So my structure is (just an example) a fast active warmup, a focused dribbling drill, a fast advantage 1v1/2v1/3v2 trailing man type drill, a focused footwork drill, a 5v5, a focused shooting/box-out drill, etc.etc
Totally agree. Not everything needs to be fast -especially at the younger ages. I had my kids scrimmage the other day for 10 minutes. It was awful from skills perspective. Everything we work on for months was thrown out the window. I slowed things down into small chucks, emphasized deliberate movements and they realized they could achieve what they want as well - fun and scoring more efficiently.
@BasketballPracticePlans Yeah same with our 5v5s, almost always a mess. I want to find a solution to forcing actions in "scrimmages" to make them more worthwhile and actually enforce the better looking drills into their actual free game behavior. Haven't figured it out yet. Maybe mandate some ideal movements/actions before they're allowed into any scoring play. So far all I do is whistle and make them "freeze" when they hear it to point out spacing problems or what they should be doing, then let them resume play, but that isn't ideal or enough
One of the most time inefficient things is democratizing in the wrong situations. How can you efficiently get them to form a majority decision on the "timeouts" they want? I can get the kids to group into pairs and 3s quickly, but if I ask them to divide the whole group into white/black, or construct 5v5 teams, or decide who will sub first, then it's going to be time-inefficient and a breakdown of the practice flow. So, in those situations, I come ready with the matchups and the division on a sheet that I can hand to them to pseudo-"self-organize" off the sheet. I feel like if I let them direct the flow of breaks, there would be a lot of arguing where 40% want to and 40% don't
I agree coach. However, at times, giving them an option to form teams or some control over practice is good for their growth as well. It make it fun for them.
@BasketballPracticePlans I agree with this too that sometimes it's ok for a bit of disorganization, especially during new drills because there's things to figure out, and the players should be learning self-organization and how to maximize their time as well. The coaches also should not be afraid of some disorganised practices because they should have the freedom for trying new things and some discovery to evolve the program. However I think the attitude of negativity is more prevalent here in Europe.... and somr parents complain if they overlook some minutes of practice and there are players or coaches running or figuring out new concepts or drills
What camera do you use with Gamechanger?
Works with the iphone - it's an app.
🙌
Could you almost take a blocker/mover approach to this and have your 4 and 5 be permanent pin down screeners? Then your 1, 2, and 3 are constantly running the dribble handoff? Also, your weak side screener could flare screen for the weak side guard to the corner as the handoff side is attacking down hill off the handoff screen, Creating a hammer action and potential three on the weak side. I haven’t watched the whole video yet so you may talk about this later on but just wanted to get your thoughts. You think something like that would have a good flow to it with there being two designated screeners?
yes, technically, you could. Interesting thought. I like to rotate kids in all positions and not give them specific roles. If I had more time in a gym, I might consider that option.
@ Thanks for replying. Putting in the Blocker/Mover offense from Tony Bennett helped an underdog team I was coaching make it to the state championship. Ever since then I have been sold. Taking your blitz offense and adapting it to a b/m system seemed like a great compliment to my base b/m offense. Just wanted to get your opinion so thank you!
@@matthewallen7810 Would love to conceptualize this further. Do you mind emailing me coachbill AT coachingyouthhoops.com
Wondered the same thing. I could adjust it to have the bigs wait for the weakside guard to come around and execute a second dribble handoff and roll. Or have a better ball-handler start in the corner spot. I sort of like the 4 out-1 in version of Mark Pope's BYU offense where he has bigs either lifting for zoom action, or staying on the block after rolling in his continuous offense. I have 3 good ball handlers and 2 weak ball-handling taller kids this year in 8th/9th grade girls, so was thinking of ways to do this effectively with them. I'll definitely use the "I got top" communication.
The video is longer than the hour it takes to teach the offense!!!
If your players attack off the DHO to the basket but get stopped and kick to the corner, how do you tell them to get back into the continuous zoom action?
1. If the kick out occurs, I encourage drive right away (or shoot depending on if that person is a shooter) 2. The passer, after the pass is made to the corner, can do a rim cut and fill opposite of the pass - just like you would teach in a 5-out motion offense. Everyone else rotate. 3. On that rotation, we are teaching to be heavy on weakside to create a triple gap between wing and corner (where the ball is). As the corner person drives, we fill in behind, attack the boards. One person calls out - I got top and they stay at the top of the key for a kick out or transition defense (I send 4 to the boards). Hope that helps. Reach me at CoachingYouthHoops.com if you need more information on that. The details are in the Blitz Offense. coachingyouthhoops.com/youth-motion-offense-basketball - Coach Bill

2 practices a week 1.5 hour per practice
when running this offense, if you have automatic cuts from players not near the ball, do they cut back to their spot after they reach the rim, or does that activate a full team rotation?
It executes a rotation. Players fill one spot closer to the ball.
I've been coaching youth basketball for 40 years. I think this is a good seminar. I scanned through most of it. I agree with most. Your prescriptions for teaching motion are good. I tend to emphasize different points. I want players to make ball side cuts after passes, and back cuts when the defender is overplaying and or crosses the read line. I tend to emphasize those "rules" for cutting. IMHO we're an an era where "assumptive" coaching is dominating kids sports. Coaches are assuming kids have the technical skills to enable team tactics. Motion requires proficient skills. Not just basic dribble, pass and shoot. Kids have to have solid pivot and rip skills. Every kid on the floor has to be able to turn and face, able to read the defense and make a competent decision. Every kid on the floor has to be able to see their cutters, find passing lanes, and lead their cutters with accurate passes in traffic. Most kids are able to acquire these skills by middle school, if they work hard enough and receive solid fundamental skills training at the early ages. You correctly noted the lack of gym space places a much greater burden on youth basketball coaches to use that time wisely and efficiently. If we only get one hour of practice per week in grade 1 - 5 youth rec, 45 minutes per week should be devoted to skills. Too many kids are showing up to their high school basketball tryouts without solid fundamental skills.
Is this easier to run than a Chin Continuity Offense? Zoom appears to need some dribble drive skills for youth, while the Chin is more passing skills required.
What I found is the player who are more skilled and comfortable will drive. The other players will stay focus on the handoff. The most important thing is everyone is involved and can play to their strengths.
and he wants only $50 for a one page explanation on how to implement this into an offense. 🙄
@@momstercrossfire one page? Not even close. It has a complete playbook - that includes drills for each element, quick hitters, press breaks, and practice plans. It also includes an animated drill book so coaches can see the plays step-by-step. I've spent hundreds of hours on the offense with my own teams perfecting it and then putting the materials together.
@@BillFlitter alright Bill, I checked your return policies, and I’m going to purchase today. I’ll try it out and come back here to leave an honest review. The zoom action does work so I’ll bite.
@@momstercrossfire No fluff, coach. Reach out with questions. I've developed it over the last two seasons. I've coached for over 15 years, never had elite athletes and they all picked up quickly and executed it in games.
My toughest aspect teaching youth is proper positioning in relation to ball, and getting kids into a great defensive body position while guarding ball

Oops, looks like I had edited that out. Thanks for pointing it out.
Thank you.
you are welcome!
Thank you for the information, as a new coach this is very helpful
Hey Coach, I'm glad you liked it. What grade do you coach?
I’m coaching 3rd grade boys whom most have zero Bball experience. Having extremely difficult time getting them to space out. And when they do space out they don’t cut. if they don’t have a ball in their hands they’re not engaged. Help!
Hey Coach, thanks for making a difference! What you describe is pretty typical for that age group. Remember they are learning. It will take them a few years to fully grasp the concept. A few things you can try: 1. Get numbers to place on the floor. Use those as the markers of where they are to stand. You can buy them on Amazon. www.amazon.com/Basketball-Training-Large-Markers-5-Pack/dp/B079C7PLLR/ref=sr_1_54 2. I have found this drill to be helpful with teaching spacing: coachingtoolbox.net/basketball-drills/basketball-drills-tiger-passing.html 3. Lots of repetition!
@@BasketballPracticePlans thanks so much for this!
@@BasketballPracticePlans how long do you recommend running the tiger passing drill? Its very foreign to most. Was wondering how to get the entire team involved in a 5-Out drill. This is perfect!
@@supraman6329 most drills I run for 5 minutes max. Maybe the first time when you are showing them how to do it, it will take a bit longer. I typically focus on a few drills but to keep it fresh, add in progressions and constraints. For example Day 1 - 5: Tiger passing Day 5-x: Tiger passing plus layup Day a-d: Tiger passing plus jump shot Day e-f: Tiger passing plus 2 defenders etc. Make sense?
@@BasketballPracticePlans makes perfect sense. Thank you!
This was very helpful. I am currently running practices with 21 5th and 6th grade girls.

So this is basically a read and react
Hey Coach, there are definitely reach & react principles incorporated. It is a really a hybrid (R&R, motion, dribble drive) that I found works at the youth level - it's easy to teach and kids grasp the principles.
@@BasketballPracticePlans ah okay
Can this presentation be shared? I want to be able to print it out.
Hey Coach, the printable version of the offense is here: basketballpracticeplans.com/youth-motion-offense/
One hr a week...I do 90% skill work then 10% play at the end until I see them progress in skills then add more play and concepts after they get comfortable w the basics
Week #2 down...had 1/2 of the team show up week 1...now the other half came this week...smdh gonna be a looooong season lol 😅
@ctriseathletics1803 How did your season pan out? Fun? Competitive? Disaster? Mine started rough, but last 4 weeks, things started clicking for everyone.
@@tmntchadthat's how kids inc or local youth leagues happen you get a bunch of kids that don't know anything it starts off rough and once they start playing decent enough together boom the seasons over.our season our usually 10 weeks 2 weeks of practice and then season starts and no more practice time just games so it's kinda hard
I have been coaching 1st through 6th grade basketball for several years now for all 3 of my kids. I want so badly to buy into the "don't teach zone" philosophy at these young ages, but this is what I see happen, over and over, team after team. In man defense, the players struggle SOO much with knowing and remembering who they are guarding, that they spend their entire time on defense just looking lost and doing nothing resembling playing defense. Us coaches are yelling to them who to guard and they are looking at us with an overwhelmed, lost and frustrated look on their face. Some of the leagues have no numbers on the front of the jerseys, and even when they do, they are often oversized and tucked in so much that you can't see the numbers. So we end up playing man defense, while our opponent is playing zone and looking way more organized, with kids actually playing defense instead of running around frustrated, and therefore learning nothing. I feel like I have tried everything, and have found no good way to teach man defense to young kids that translates to the game. I coach in rec so there are a lot of kids just trying the sport out which makes things even harder. So while zone defense at the young ages is not recommended due to what it does to the opposing offense, I feel like teaching man defense has it's own issues with making the game frustrating and hard for the kids to enjoy playing.
Teach them how to beat a zone ..attack gaps make zone shift
Hey Coach, you might find this resource useful: ua-cam.com/video/5rwGuN7Wycs/v-deo.html. I show you how to teach man-2-man defense
I’ve been running a modified box and 1 zone with my 2nd and 3rd grade teams. It wins games and I feel it’s teaching the same principles as man to man because I treat it like a match up zone while letting the kids rotate to who’s the 1 guarding the ball so they still get that man to man work and later in the season it makes teaching man and man to man principles so much easier. Don’t let them scare you out of zone defenses. If you teach it the right way you can teach them man principles. A lot of people categorize zone as a standing defense. In the modified box and 1 defense I teach it still teaches on ball basics, jumping to the ball on the pass, help side, etc. and you can really do that with any zone defense.
i think leagues should ban zone until 6th grade. it's important to learn how to guard man to man even if it doesn't look great.
Been coaching for over 20 years at all levels….play zone and teach man to man principles out of the zone..DO NOT put players in a zone and tell them to guard an area. Teach them how to guard the ball, help side defense, close outs from the zone. Make them responsible for a person in the zone. Only difference they aren’t running around chasing a person and looking lost.
Thank you very much. thanks for sharing
Can pass and screen away ever be the primary, vs pass and cut to hoop?
Hey Ron, for sure. On my high school team, I added that as an option in a very specific situation. When the low wing position has to make a cut, and the only open spot to fill is the one they just left, they set a back screen. Those players are a bit more advanced to have more options.
Good presentation. Quick question-on the 5 out do you assign positions when setting up? (4th grade boys)
Thanks, William! I do not assign positions. I do assign roles. For youth, I made up the Greenlight Shooting badge. You have to pass a shooting assessment that helps me determine which shot you are the best at. Every week(ish depending upon the number of practices), we do the assessment again to see if you earned a new badge to maybe extend your range. I am trying to encourage the kids to earn badges and to shoot between practices.
What does the shooting assessment consist of?
I'm glad you recorded this and put it on UA-cam. I wasn't able to attend the live zoom. Thanks for everything coach Flitter. This will be our go to offense.
Hey Coach! Awesome. Appreciate you.
