Dub Comparison | Fruits Basket 2001 vs 2019
SEASON 1 AND RETURNING VAs ONLY
THERE WILL/CAN NOT BE A SEQUEL TO THIS VIDEO
Since I've been procrastinating on... EVERYTHING, I figured some people might be interested to see the returning voice actors between the adaptations WITHOUT having to go to each of my analysis videos. So I finally compiled all 16 (minus 2 exceptions) English voice actors into one video! Hope you enjoy!!

I love this, i will watch the og one day but i absolutely loved the new 2019 one
It's amazing how much improvement has happened with the Japanese names between 2001 and 2019 versions, like how Ayamé (Aya) sound like "Ei-ya" or Makoto Takei was "Makoto 'Takai'" A huge improvement, indeed.
They also pronounced Kagura like "kaGUra" and not "KAgura"
It was the writing, the written script for 2001 dialogue was just SO MUCH BETTER and the animation had so much more life to it, you can tell it’s the directions they took that made it better even though it’s the same voice cast
original felt more sincere in almost each point
Ngl in the og series the Dub was far better then then sub. But in the 2019 the sub was so amazing especially Kyo and Tohru.
This isn't about the voice acting, but I can't help but be impressed at how nice the translation is for the 2019 version! I feel like the wordflow is often more creative and smooth in the new one. I especially noticed it during Motoko's scenes. XD
Justin Cook going from Yusuke to Haru, then reprising both roles these many years later (this + Yu Yu Hakusho OVA's) and still being able to pull them off. It's not an exact same because obviously his voice has aged but pretty good I'd say. 4:32 HELLO YUSUKEEEE. I somehow forgot that both Justin Cook and John Burgmeier (Kurama's VA) were in this, so I have this double nostalgia of Yu Yu Hakusho and Furuba together lol I think John had a bit more difficulty getting back into Kurama's voice these many years later but he still has retained that similar cadence that both Kurama and Shigure have. Jerry Jewel is the reason why I can't watch Furuba in Japanese because his voice acting for Kyo is so good. He has one of the most rememberable voices playing Kyo. I'm so glad to see him again!! I think his 2019 voice acting is much more livelier than the 2001 version? Kyo still sounds great getting angry LOL I think out of everyone, his voice acting is great in both 2001 and 2019. Of course, I grew up with the 2001 version so I am biased to say I like it better than the 2019 version but from what I can see they did their best. Besides any bias, I prefer the 2001 version because it sounds more... natural? The voices are more soft? I'm not sure how to explain it. I don't mind how some of the male voice actors sound rougher in comparison
Been knowing about fruits basket since i was 12 years old watched all of the 2001 series now its all popular with the new release just dont feel right since im used to the 2001 version especially the intro song is so nostalgic to me wont be the same 🥲
2001 kisa and hero 😭💘💘
It’s only after I look back at Tohru’s voice in the 2001 version that I heard a real difference. She sounded more laid back and relaxed. I love both versions honestly it’s just a different feel to it is all. I do hear the improvements, definitely not their first rodeo by that point.
Honestly, I’ve only watched the remake, but I had no idea the entire cast of the remake is the same as the original!
The 2001 isnt bad idk what your one about even if it has its own story its still canon and good ur a grown man complainh ahout it
While I consider the reboot superior one thing I wish they kept from the original was Tohru's eye color, since it was her dads.
Ok I didn’t realize that it had been redone. I thought I was going crazy when I started watching it on Hulu vs my dvds.
Whats crazy is that the actors plays the same character in both 2001 AND 2019 version! However some characters has a different voice actor in the 2019 version.
When i compare the two, the older version voices sound much richer. Tohru is so cute when her voice cracks and the sound of her voice when she speaks softly during an emotional scene is so clear in my mind. Same Yuki and many other charcters. Their voices are more memorable in the first version because of the rich tones. In the 2019, it sounds more echoey and far away? I don't know why. Much love to both versions!
I actually really prefer the original dub. It's not nostalgia since I watched it subbed back then -- I just think the delivery is a lot more nuanced and realistic. The 2019 version feels overdone and cartoony.
Akitaro Daichi is also a sex pest/predator apparently
Is that why "now and then, here and there" abuse felt so uncomfortable and grounded?
@@kostajovanovic3711 👀👀👀
i know a lot of people don’t like the change but i like the german accents… it just feels true to the characters ☺️
Both are good, but I like how the new one puts more emotion into each scene.❤
i like the animation of the 2001 ver better in my personal opinion
The relationship between Daichi and Takaya is ambiguous because Justin's forum comment is really the only evidence to support their bad blood. In Daichi's creator profile from the June 2006 issue of Newtype USA, it's stated that she wanted him to direct the show. In the Those With Wings author notes she had also previously taken an interest in Kodocha which Daichi also directed, and in the author notes for the Fruits Basket manga she talks about writing the drama CD adaptation to be more comedic which to me would make the claim that she didn't like the comedic direction of the original pretty hypocritical. The Laura Bailey commentary you played does support the information we do have available. In the Funimation DVD interviews Daichi talks about the struggles of forcibly gathering up his staff for the show and how that he doesn't think he could do it again. The timeline for Takaya's arm injury, the start of the production, and Takaya's thank you message for making it out of the hospital in the manga (which does mention the anime staff) along with that Laura Bailey commentary does seem to pretty concretely confirm that it was made in tribute to her. Do you happen to have a source for that audio clip?
I miss when Hiro and Kisa were voiced by actual kids, tbh. They sound too much like adult women trying to sound like kids now.
I really don't understand. The 2019 is bad, rather than improve it sounds like they fell off their peak and are less motivated this time around. The script is also much worse, they're conveying fewer emotions while using more words. That the exact opposite of what good writing is supposed to accomplish.
I broke out the old DVDs before starting the new series & with that many episodes on a disc, they had to use lower bitrates, affecting both the audio & video. Watching the series on a modern home theater setup was a little painful.
This makes me want to see a modern take on Yu-Yu-Hakusho.
How did it take so long for me to realize Yusuke Urameshi and Hatsuharu Souma have the same actor?
The 2019 dub is much better
It still makes me very happy that they brought back so many of the original cast members. Fruits Basket 2001 actually had one of my favorite dubs, and it's hard for me to imagine any other English actors in a lot of these roles --- especially the main four. As someone who discovered the series back in around 2012 and read the manga soon after, the new series fulfilled a long-standing dream of mine to see them get to finish the story as it was intended.
Interesting. They were both good but the new version has better audio I think because its sounds more "Clear"? As if its easier to hear or something. Plus I always love hearing Yusuke U. and Kurama again 😊
Of all of them, you leave out MOMIJI?!
I love them both, their both dear to my heart.
I love the original. I love the sub and dub for the original, the art style is faithful to the art and the vibe of the manga <3
I've only seen the 2001, I wanna watch the 2019 one because I heard it has a more deeper concept of smth.
It’s also more faithful to the manga and fully follows the story compared to 2001
I think I like Tohru's, Hatori's, and Kisa's original voices since they seemed juuust a tad deeper and slower, with this kind of gruffer quality for Hatori, an easier listening for Tohru and less wispy for Kisa. Though no matter what my nostalgia's a huge bias so can't really be sure 🤡💕
I do appreciate how close they followed the original script lmao 😭💜
Dubs were just better back then
Hatsuharu screaming "fight me and die" will always be a mood
Does anyone else find it strange that Motoko's hair color changed?
I remember on how I heard about the 2001 anime, and put it on my watchlist, but never actually watched it until way later. I found out they made a reboot and checked it out. Fell in love with the first season and asked for a fruits basket blu-ray for christmas that year. I didn't specify which fruits basket blu-ray I wanted so my parents gave me one of the 2001 anime. I thought it was okay and finally watched it. Actually, to be honest I haven't touched it since and it's just sitting there collecting dust in my bookshelf now because I only thought it was okay. Don't regret watching it, but I prefer the new anime and the manga by a far reach.
I like the dub. They did well
5:24 kisa sounded alot older in first version and then got younger as an adult. That's amazing
*Toe-wroo*
Interesting how in Wendy Powell's first performance as Kyo's mother, you can really hear the doubt and fear in her voice
It may just be quality of mic or they perfected their craft or both, but the old vs new dub is night and day. Amazing what 18+ years will do for quality of dub VA. It might also be better scripting.
I prefer the sub of fruits basket 2019.but hey not all dubbed anime are bad some They're just good other times dubs can make you laugh or cry that all depends
I know some people say that Yuki's voice sounds too old but I personally love it. I think it adds more character to him, especially his snarky and sassy moments. His calm and quiet demeanor acts as a nice foil to contrast Kyo's loud, brash voice. Speaking of Kyo, I think Jerry really upgraded the tonality of his character. He manages to sound kind of angry with every line, even when Kyo is trying to be nice. I think it shows Kyo's "awkward kindness" a bit better.
Eric Vale: How breathy do you want me to sound? Creators: yes
4:07 fourth-wall haru
This was my mom's favorite and made sure to make me and my sister watch this because of all the underline morals in the story
