Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) was a black British composer. Known best in his lifetime for his cantata trilogy Hiawatha, based on Longfellow's poem, Coleridge-Taylor also wrote many beautiful art songs.       Great question -- this is the low/original key! Fun fact: in the manuscript of this score, Coleridge-Taylor specifically inscribed it "for contralto voice"!

    Absolutely beautiful! Rorem is one of America's best composers, and the best composer of this kind of art song.
