Newtown Neurotics - Pissed as a Newt cassette tape - No Wonder Records - 1982
Newtown Neurotics were based around Harlow, home of Stortbeat Records (releasing the debut 7" single by Bishop Stortford band Epileptics / Licks), Urban Decay, The Square, and The Playhouse and of course No Wonder Records.
I spent a fair bit of time in Harlow as a youth, a gritty concrete town in Essex; "Another silent new town problem with no solution in sight" the Neurotics passionately sung on 'Oh No' one of the songs uploaded onto this UA-cam post just after seventeen minutes.
Other notable towns that Harlow is near to were, Bishops Stortford, a quaint market town with the Triad as the main venue. Welwyn Garden City, with the Ludwick Hall venue, and yet another new town, Stevenage (made infamous as being the location for the 1968 kitchen sink drama 'Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush') which housed the wonders of the Bowes Lyon House, a venue on the 'professional' punk rock circuit.
Harlow was also home the Jean Harlow / Bennys pub / club, where the BBC cameras were poised at a Combat 84 performance just in time for a bit of the old ultra-violence, between, I assume, different divisions of boneheads. I guess a nice bit of footage if you like boneheads cracking other bonehead’s heads.
There were 7″singles by British Movement band Combat 84, a band which included straight arm salute vocalist Chris 'Chubby' Henderson, displayed prominently in the window of Star Time Records, the punk record shop in Post Office Walk near to the grey concrete market area.
There were certainly many National Front members based in Harlow. At the time it seemed that those politics were favoured, so placing Combat 84 7" singles in the window display guaranteed sales.
Countering bands like Combat 84 were The Newtown Neurotics, who’s members when the first two records were recorded and released on No Wonder Records, included Tig Barber, the original drummer, Steve Drewitt, vocalist and guitarist (who had Joey Ramone style hair during this period) and the lean punker Colin on the bass.
The debut 7" record on No Wonder Records, 'Hypocrite' was a decent offering. Hypocrite had nice harmonies, and a Rudi style intro and riff coming up now and again throughout the song. 'You Said No' is the weaker song, a newtown love song with a slightly awkward 'reggae' riff, a bit Stiff Little Fingers-esq. It wasn't that this song was bad, but for me, it wasn't particularly great either.
The second 7" single (and the fourth 7" single released on No Wonder records) had the Newtown Neurotics punching above their weight. Two magnificent tracks, 'When The Oil Runs Out' and my favourite Newtown Neurotics song 'Oh No'.
This 7" single adorned with a great image on the picture sleeve really stands out, and is perhaps my favourite record of the locality.
'Oh No' is just a stone wall classic. I hope you can keep the interest up long enough to hear this song on this UA-cam post.
No Wonder Records then released this cassette tape 'Pissed As Newts' (an awful choice of title for a band like Newtown Neurotics although 'Newts' is a clever twist but whatever) which was a full length album with a selection of songs recorded live at various venues like Camden Dingwalls, Harlow Benny's, Bishops Stortford Triad, and various other places including the park in Harlow! All the live recordings are with Tig drumming and are recorded from 1978 until 1981.
The quality some of the songs on the cassette tape are pretty ropey being recorded on a handheld cassette recorder in the crowd, a few other songs are of a slightly higher quality being mixing desk recordings. All songs are top notch musically and lyrically though.
This cassette tape was released in 1982 after Tig had left the band.
Around the latter months of 1981, Tig who had left the band and was replaced by Simon. Colin was still a lean punker and Steve had disowned his 'Joey Ramone' hairstyle and invested in a cropped haircut, making the band look a little more clean cut and sharp!
By the third 7" single, 'Kick Out The Tories' No Wonder Records had got help from the Leeds based C.N.T record label. Effectively a joint label release.
'Kick Out The Tories' never dates as the lyrics seem to be valid whatever the decade, and no doubt will be well into the future.
One of my abiding memories of Newtown Neurotics was at a gig at Harlow Square during the miners strike when the final chorus of 'Kick Out The Tories', was repeated as a mantra for what seemed like a whole two minutes. Everybody in the hall joining in on the rather extended chorus.
'Mindless Violence' although it was a great song, when wrestling against the glorious anthem of 'Kick Out The Tories', there was only going to be one winner.
The Newtown Neurotics went on to record more great material and the bands full length album ‘Beggars Can Be Choosers’ released on Razor Records, simply must be heard.
The Newtown Neurotics really were Harlow's 'Clash' for the younger audience like myself in the early eighties.

James - WOMAD festival - 21st July 1985

I always had a soft spot for James, as I, and a couple of friends, were at the band's ninth concert in Brixton in December 1983 when James were supporting New Order, absolutely blowing New Order off of the stage. I guess that wasn't hard as New Order were proper bladdered by the look of Hooky and Bernard. We arrived for New Order but left with James. Then there was a headlining slot at the Lond...
Lone Ranger - Barnabas Collins & Dean Stone - Haunted House - GG's Records - 1977

It is now Halloween, so uploaded today are two songs so terrifying you will all need to place the bed sheets over your head, with your teeth chattering and getting the sweats, until both songs are finished. WAIVER: These songs are not scary, I only wanted to set the mood. Two 'cutting blade' cuts, one by Lone Ranger of the vampire 'Barnabas Collins', and one by Dean Stone yapping on about his H...

Uploaded today is Holt's rendition of Delano Stewart's, 'Dance With Me' originally recorded and released in 1968 on Sonia Pottinger's High Note record label. That song was updated and covered wonderfully by Johnny Clarke as 'Rock With Me Baby', which was released on a 7" via the Attack record label in 1975. Bunny Lee was involved in Clarke's recording, this cut was recorded with Lee's signature...

Ten years ago John Holt passed on, may he continue to Rest In Peace. Uploaded today is Holt's rendition of Little Roy's 'Tribal War', originally released on the Tafari record label in 1974. Holt's version of the song was recorded at Channel One studios and backed up by the Revolutionaries, and remains my favourite of the two cuts. The B-side 'Why Can't I Leave You' is also great. Part of an ess...
Xmal Deutschland - BBC Radio 1 - John Peel session - December 1982
Переглядів 1512 місяці тому
It is no secret to those that know me, your humble scribe, that I simply adored Xmal Deutschland. This John Peel session was, and still is, magnificent. Four songs recorded while the band were at the top of their game, but still pretty much a lesser known band in the UK. From the first time that I saw them perform in London at the Hammersmith Clarendon in April 1983, I knew that the band were v...

A few weeks ago I sold this copy of 'Second Pressure' by the Rhythm Rulers, Harry Mudie's studio band, for a little £££ (quite a lot actually). A shame really but it's just the way it is. I thought that I might as well digitalise the record prior to wrapping it up and posting. In general I do digitalise and scan high priced 7" records in case buyers complain for any reason. Anyway, here it is, ...

I knew Bim very well. Bim visited Southern Studios and Southern Record Distributors often, a couple of times a month over many years in the nineties. We went to cafe's to eat together. I was a visitor to his home in Turnpike Lane. I was present at his rare live performances that were organised in London. I was also, inevitably, present at his funeral in New Southgate, and later that afternoon, ...
The Sub-Tract art exhibition - Colin Latter interviewed at the Fisher Gallery for BBC Radio Suffolk

On Monday 23rd September, on BBC Radio Suffolk, Colin was interviewed live at the Fisher Gallery to talk about his artwork being displayed there, amongst other subjects. This UA-cam post includes the complete interview that was broadcast along with Colin's excellent paintings that accompany the audio. There seems to have been a slight problem with one of the microphones during some parts of the...
NECRO - ten songs from a practice session - January 1982

Uploaded today is another Necro practice this time from January 1982. My previous YT post also featured Necro, another practise session for a later (and indeed last) line-up (when my younger brother had joined as the guitarist). That other practice session was recorded in January 1983. This practice session recorded in January 1982, is predictably far rougher than the practice session recorded ...

Steve and I were looking for a guitarist and bassist. Rob Baxter came along with a bass guitar and a top record collection no doubt some pilfered from elder brother Mickey (at some point much later in the 1980’s to be known as ‘Penguin’). Simon was a friend from another band who joined on guitar. Although Simon was a good friend, he didn’t really get what we wanted to do and after a disastrous ...

I had an hour and a half (yes an hour and a half) conversation on the telephone a few weeks ago with the great Roy Cousins of The Royals. It was lovely to speak to him, I had not spoken to him for a very long time. Roy is seventy five years old now, but is still sharp in mind. His ears and eyes are fading just a little bit, saying that though his eyesight was never that great over thirty years ...
Blyth Power - Ambulance Station - Old Kent Road - London SE1 - 6th April 1985
Переглядів 1777 місяців тому
I went to the squatted Ambulance Station situated along Old Kent Road in Bermondsey, south London, for three of my favoured bands of the eighties. Blyth Power, The Astronauts and Blood and Roses. Blood and Roses had imploded in 1983, which was a shame, but by 1985 the band were ready to record more material (eventually releasing one 7"/12" single and an album) and perform a few concerts. Blyth ...

This takes me back. If I recall Raymond Napatil was only a young kid from B'ham. Someone may correct me it was a long time ago 😁
Got to see Vex supporting Discharge(i think) in the very early 80's. Cracking version of Paranoid. 😊

I can't find my CD copy (I can't find the little box it came in, but I put the disc itself in a jewelcase so I could file it with my other CD's, and now it's MIA), so I appreciate this upload. Thank you
I discovered this band last year - and I was born in 1952! Their personnel (token white dude + 3 Pakistanis) reminds me of another, politically and musically very different group, called UNIT who were, during most of the 2000s, comprised of a token white guy + 3 Chinese lads. Oddly, I also discovered this bunch (UNIT) actually recorded no less than 4 Alien Kulture tracks on one of their albums - not sure which one though. It came out in 2010 I think. Their versions of Arranged Marriage (with a lovely flute descant) and Siege & Turmoil are superb.
I knew Andy Martin in the mid eighties when he lived at 108 Brougham Road in Hackney. I followed the Apostles / Academy 23 / UNIT along throughout the last (over) four decades. I like Andy, although he is very capable of being contradictory and somewhat difficult. Andy used to work, or at least help out, at a youth club I think, where he met the members of what was to become UNIT.
I must confess that I am one of the few individuals who prefers "Tocsin" to "Fetisch". I feel that the band had really defined and perfected their sound by then. Peter's drumming further enriched their approach and made more development possible. The (frequently overlooked) "Sequenz" 12" is another favourite. All of that notwithstanding, this session is, like their debut, also excellent.
Thank you for sharing... ❤❤❤ I got the MYHC EP on vinyl. What are the titles of the tracks from this EP...?
fantastic
Fun fact. My mum, was Millie Small's cleaner.
Anyone know this Senseless Things song I had on tape?? My favourite ever but not sure if it was ever released on vinyl. Not sure of title. Lyrics go: “I passed your school today, on my home, I get that kind of feeling I get when I’m alone, if only, if only, I weren’t so confused, I find a way to forget, what I feel for you” Really hoping someone knows this track!

This is not Tommy Vance interviewing of the Friday Rock show fame and other shows. It cant be as Tommy have a much deeper and a very particular voice. It sounds like Alan Freeman who was so a also a great DJ back then.

I was at this gig! None of the boys I knew would go so I went on my own and clambered onto the stage when the fighting started. We managed to pull another kid free from the skinheads after a tug-of-war with his body! Think I saw Sack getting nicked at the train station after. Funny to hear this tape now after so long... Just saw Steve Igs at the 100 Club two nights ago - great to see we all still share the same passion and love!

That is hilarious that Gen points out that it was Gysin who invented the cutup and Burroughs is more associated . And yet Genesis claimed that he was the first person to put the words Acid House on a dance record, And had ran with that folktale for years.
Hi there Burroughs himself spoke about getting so enthousiast about Brion Gysin,s Cut/up technics (who got this from his short period in the Dadaist movememt ),Marcel Duchamp expelled Gysin. Anyhow Burroughs made his trilogy based On cutups like Ticket that explode etcetera, interesing if your into Burroughs. Too me important that I read some introduction and info about this Burroughs Trilogy/ to understand the Novels better, because they can be difficult (too me). On the other hand cut/ups can shift around like poems or can be very nice/unusual/ divers, which make them atractive. GreetZ from The Netherlands, keep up the good stuf ThX for Posting
@@orgonebox4mi357 Gysin was expelled from the Surrealists. Gysin would have been too young to be part of DADA considering he was born in 1916.DaDa being a reaction against WW1 and only lasted until 1920.
Good that you made clear that it should be Surrealist instead of Dadaist which I mentioned. Thanks/ GreetZ

I was 15 when this album was released in the US, and for some reason I purchased it and listened to it a reasonable amount of times, yet 54 years later, all I remember is the line... "and there's a million different theories, and a million alibis..."
Thanks so v. much for all the detail everywhere.
