Ah mate, this is fantastic, it is something I am still to witness. Thanks for sharing, just subscribed from a fellow UA-camr 😉👍
Thanks Phil, hope you get to witness one. It's a special treat. Thanks for the subscription.
No problem pal, hope so too
Great video! Fantastic nature!
Thanks very much for your nice comment.
Fantastic Michael…incredible scenes and well put together. Great to meet you up there
Thanks Martin, great to meet you too. Did you pick up my message on your Web page?
Yes, it had gone to the junk folder for some reason but I replied this afternoon with a link to a couple of photos of you so it’s probably in your junk too!
Top work
Thanks very much Nicolas, pleased you enjoyed it.
Great video! Really good footage. Looking forward to the next. New sub from us!
Thanks for the sub! Backpacking Islay next. Should be out in a couple of weeks
Just watched your second wild camping video, very good. New sub from me
Great to see another video from you Michael and its a beauty. Fantastic shots of the inversion, it must have been something else to see it in person
Thanks Ian nice to hear from you again, and thanks for the great comments as always. The next video should be out in a couple of weeks. Heads up for you: it's "Backing the Wild and Remote Coast of Islay." Yes, it was very special to be there in person, really didn't want to come down. Thanks again for your nice comments. Hope you enjoy Islay.
My wife and I had a little chat with you on that special day on St Sunday , was an awesome spectacle to witness.. Your footage is beautiful to watch keep the videos coming Michael 😊
Thanks Matt, it was great to meet with you both. It was a special day that one. Keep on ticking them Wainwrights off.
I’ve been fortunate enough to witness a few of these in my time on the fells. Amazing! Good vid Michael 👍
Thanks Richard, pleased you enjoyed it
Another good one Mick.
Cheers Sean lad,, pleased you liked it.
Fantastic video! I’m looking forward to hiking it in Sept - can’t wait!
Thanks very much, I hope you have a great time and the weather is kind to you.
Thanks for sharing. I would say by far one of the best video about this fabulous journey to Zermatt. I made it solo out of Chamonix August 26, did the same mistake like you on Grat, tried to push further, but alone before sheer dropoffs, it was to risky. So, I tracked back, and at my arrival at the hut, I've hiked non-stop almost 11 hours, +2740, -2160m. Men, you have a pair of balls. Congrats !!
Thanks very much for the compliments on the video. Congratulations on finishing and especially making it to the Europa hut after tracking back, you have had one hell of a day there. it's a lot of climbing anyway without having to go back. I am assuming you watched the vid after your journey.
So glad I bumped into you earlier small talk about drones and you introduced me to this magnificent achievement well done mate what a quality watch this video was keep them coming 👌
Thanks very much James, pleased you enjoyed it. Maybe we will catch each other on the fields again.
Looking forward to watching your journey Michael
Thanks Ian, Just had a week on Islay, so that will be out first.
Looking forward to seeing these Michael. Good luck 👍
Thanks Richard, in Isla at the moment, backpacking around the north and west coast, will have that published first.
@MSCoutdoors ah nice. Hope the weather has been good. Looks forward to these too. I'm doing Ben Nevis via CMD soon. Anything I need to know beforehand? Cheers Michael. Keep em coming.🙂
I went up there via the CMD years ago. As far as I remember we hiked from the distillery. My wife had a bit of a flap on due to the ridge, being covered in cloud and wind., but it was a nice ridge with not too many issues.
@@MSCoutdoors thanks mate. It looks as though it should be fine if the weather is ok.
Hey again mate. I must have watched these videos about 5 times now. Unreal! I'm curious why you didn't go from Bella Tola summit to Meidpass via Pas De Bouef and Borterpass? Essentially continuing in a straight line around Aiguilles du Meiden on the Outdooractive map? It seems to cut off about an hour and avoid the backtracking. Did something tip you off that it might not be feasible? Cheers
Hi Randy, originally during the route Planning stage and also shown on the video route, I went off the outdooractive route which does backtrack. In reality, Jimmy and I cut off this backtracking when we came off Bellatola and essentially skirted around the west side of pas de bouef. At the time realised this route was a lot shorter than what we had originally planned. Pleased you are enjoying the videos.
Hi Jimmy, great video. In 1982 i was in the army stationed in Germany. Our Troop Captain decided we were going to walk the Haute Route. So i think approx Tuesday 15th of June we set off from Osnabruck to Chamonix about a 14 hour journey & Got a good nights sleep. The next day we had a look around Chamonix, went on this crazy miniature bobsleigh ride (wooden board on wheels) & about quarter a mile long Then early evening '16 Squaddies sitting outside this bar of all nationalities slowly getting drunk when this big screen appears & up pops this big TV screen & England v France, World Cup kicks off & Bryan Robson scores after 27 seconds at the time the fastest ever World Cup goal. Anyway i digress! The next day we started the walk & Twelve days later we were in Zermatt The biggest difference from my memory is how little snow & ice in your video? Every valley was full of snow & the walls of the peaks were also covered in snow so you can imagine how different it was. I took about 50 photo's but lost all of them about 25 years ago when moving house & have regretted that ever since!! I am has i type asking some of the lads on our Facebook Group if any took their own photo's & Two have being uploaded up to now. Anyway safe climbing wherever your next journey takes you, Mark Holmes
Great video so far. What were the dates of your hike? Sounded like September. I need to plan for mine and I am hoping for good weather. September would be a great time for me. Please let me know your dates. Thank you.
Thanks very much for your nice comments. We travelled on the 1st September, so spent 1st two weeks in Sept completing the route. Weather was lovely although still hot during the day,, especially in the 1st week. Hope you have a great trek, September I would say was a good choice. Thanks again, Michael
This is such a good video. Thanks a heap. Had booked my trek for August/September including Hotel Schwarzhorn instead of Bella Tolla, and had no idea about that accessible summit. Changing that as we speak!
Thanks and really pleased you enjoyed the video. Have a great time in September and hope you get great weather. Bella Tola and the Rothhorn, both great add ons and would definitely recommend you do them.
@@MSCoutdoors Yeah you certainly sell them pretty well! I've tied myself in knots a bit booking Cabane de Moiry - Pension De la Post (Zinal) - Hotel Schwarzhorn (Gruben) - Hotel Heimatlodge (St Nicklaus) - Europahutte - Zermatt back to back. So have left myself one day less than you had and need to replace either Zinal or Gruben with Cabane Bella Tola. Which means making either your days 9 and 10 or days 11 and 12 into a single day. Watching back over the video, I'm thinking replacing Zinal might be best and doing days 9 and 10 as one day De Moiry to Bella Tola. Worst case taking the cable car from Sorebois to Zinal if it's a bit tight. What do you think?
Michael what other long distance ‘thru’ hikes had you done before doing the Haute Route?
Main ones have been the Capewrath trail in May 2022 (12 days) then Jimmy and I completed all the Lakedistrict Wainwright fells in one complete backpacking journey the following year.(23 days) only 4 people have ever done this including Jimmy and I. Then the Haute Route. This year we are off to Slovenia to do part of the slovenian mountain trail for two weeks.
Great. I’ve done the TMB twice which is very beautiful so thought I’d do the Haute Route this time.
Well done for getting through it. Very stressful !
Thanks Scott
Amazing work with this video. What program do you use for your 3D map visualizations?
Hi Jill, I use outdooractive and then video it with My Gopro, it's a lot easier as long as you don't produce in full screen otherwise it is poorer quality
@@MSCoutdoors Thank you so much!
Great video. Those ladies are an inspiration.
Thanks very much, Jeff. They absolutely are.
what kind of camera did you use to film this? Looks great!
Thanks! I use a GOPRO10
Superb videos lads.Love my hiking videos but they can all become a bit samey.Your commentary really made the video, amusing and informative. Those aul ladies were absolute gems, puts things into perspective, their laughing was contagious, found myself laughing along with yous😂.Im wild camping the whr in july, wish me luck!
Thanks very much, I've had some great feedback over the course of this series and yours has got to be up there with the best of them. It gives me encouragement for the future to continue with the same style of video. So again thanks very much. I'm a bit jealous of you wild camping the route, we normally camp on our tours but on this occasion decided to have a bit more luxury. Hope you have a great time and get great weather.. Yeah, day 11 with old ladies was my favourite day, such an unexpected treat bumping into them and they made what was a great days trekking even better. Good luck for your trek and if you need any advise please just give me a shout.
Thanks Michael,i think the majority of people watching these vids are thinking of attempting the whr themselves. Im suprised the amount of hiking vids i watch and some dont even tell you what time of year they are there.Always interesting to get some historical info about the area, culture, wildlife etc...Distance travelled, time on trail, effort exerted, possible shortcuts(cable cars, buses),camping spots, ability to charge devices, sleeping conditions in huts, grocery stores along the route are all topics that could be off interest.Oh and most importantly how much was a pint at the huts🍺and did they make those sandwiches for yous?😁
Hi British Irish, let me have your name, and I will give you all the help I can for your trip. I created a spreadsheet of our journey with all the important stuff on it, which may help you. I use an elevation gain reference/factor I have created myself and helps me work out how easy our tough the day is likely to be. Essentially it's the height gain/loss divided by the distance. Ends up giving a figure of feet per mile over the day/ trek. Its very handy to know each day. The spreadsheet can be sent to you if you drop me your email on my WhatsApp 07951033737. Or feel free to give me a call.
Brilliant video lads - I did the same route as you guys last August and the year before - and a few detours! - so many great memories.
Thanks very much for your nice comments, hope it brought back some nice memories for you
What a cracking film. I looked at most of the WHR videos online before doing this trek and yours is far better than all the others. Thanks for this, it is magnificent.
Thanks very much Andrew. I am pleased you have enjoyed it. Your comments mean a lot, so thanks so much for your appreciation.
Wonderfull!!! Well Done!
Thanks very much Peter for your nice comments. It's appreciated.
Fantastic lads! A great achievement!!!
Thanks very much Clive for your nice comments, it's appreciated.
Fantastic - thank you. I’ll be there the last week of August.
Thanks very much littlpack, hope you enjoy it as much as we did. We were there 1st two weeks in Sept, weather was great. Hope you get the same. We will be in Slovenia 🇸🇮 for two weeks starting last week in August.
Michael and Jimmy, great to see all your Haute route video's compiled into one continuous film. As ive said before, watching your journey feels like we are actually on the trail with you. Love the humour and stoicism that you display no mater whats facing you. Cheers lads
Thanks very much again for your kind comments. Hope you enjoy it. Thanks Michael
Amazing work to capture this Michael. Thanks for bringing us along
Thanks very much Seamus, pleased you are enjoying the series. It's been a pleasure both completing the trail and producing the videos. I'm looking forward to making more.
Well done guys
Thanks very much
Have really enjoyed your film. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Neil, I am pleased you have enjoyed them.
Amazing! I am looking forward watching all episodes!
Thanks very much
very nice series! really waiting to see the full film...
Thanks Peter, pleased you enjoyed them.
Great journey Michael n Jimmy really enjoyed it 🎉
Thanks Ducky, you got yourself a cameo on day 1 as well lad.
Michael and Jimmy I've thoroughly enjoyed watching your journey on the Haute route. Its challenging enough doing a multi day hike but you went the extra mile to document it for others to enjoy. Loved the way you tackled each day and gave us the virtual experience of being there with you and you were honest enough to show us when things didn't go exactly to plan and as we all know those things do happen. Looking forward to seeing your Haute route put into one video and your future adventures. I am off to the Lakes next week for a couple of days to get my fix of the outdoors and maybe i will one day bump into you lads on a mountain. Cheers
Thanks very much Ian. As always, very complimentary comments from you. I feel honesty is always the best policy. Things do go wrong from time to time, especially in the mountains, learning from them is the most important thing. It's great that you picked up on the virtual experience. I set out initially to make the videos a realistic memory for Jimmy and I to look back on, but it's great that people feel they were there with us on our journey. I am over the lakes a lot, I have a static in Pooley Bridge. Feel free to message me if you ever want to join up for a hike. Not sure if you know but Jimmy and I last year did a full and continuous backpacking journey of all 214 Wainwrights. By far the most difficult trek we have ever done. We completed it in 23 days. I am planning on replicating that journey in 7 long weekends, covering the 7 routes "Eastern Fells, North Western Fells etc in the coming year. I will publishing the journeys on UA-cam. If you ever fancy joining me your welcome.
@@MSCoutdoors Michael i may take you up on the offer of a walk if our schedules allow it. I am a bit of a novice in the lakes but i am determined to keep visiting and picking off those Wainwrights as i go along. Cheers again mate for the great videos. Ian
Anytime Ian, just give me a shout.
Looks absolutely amazing. Well done
Thanks very much Lisa, pleased you have enjoyed the series.
I’m Jimmy’s cousin. Great to see your adventures. Beautiful places
Ah!! Hello Lisa,.
Well done Michael and Jimmy. You guys went above and beyond the normal demands of the Walker's Haute, with your extra climbs to various summits and the like. It was hard enough doing the standard version. Thanks for taking us along on your journey, I enjoyed the videos very much.
Thanks Graeme. You have made some lovely comments during the course of the journey, it's all very much appreciated. I'm really pleased you have enjoyed them.
What a stunning and entertaining series of films...walked the route this summer with my missus, and we absolutely loved this slog of a walk...thanks for letting us relive it through your films. Fantastic and beautifully shot films - looking forward to the next!
Thanks very much, Mark, for your nice comments. Those sorts of comments mean a lot to me.
Thanks for taking us on your trip. We are booked for August so in full training !
You're welcome. You are in for a treat. Hope you have a great time.
that edge you walk on in the bottom of the ancient glacier path, is the results of rocks and boulders rolling of the melting ice-mass, and falling one on top of another for hundreds of years. If you happen to be able to travel to the morteratch glacier in sankt moritz, you can see a small version of that phenomenon at the far end of the glacier depths... the side pointing towards the sun melts faster than the side that remains in the shade, resulting in an upwards slope of ice. On top of the glacier are rocks and boulders, as the ice melts from underneath, they roll down the slope, and drop the last meters onto a small hill. These are always situated near one edge of the glacierpath....
Thanks Peter, very informative! The lateral moraine on this day was the most impressive one we saw on our whole journey. I knew little about them before we started our trek but we were both fascinated by the power required to create them. I researched a little bit about Glaciers and morains when I returned home and did that little talk over on day 8 about the lateral moraine and the ice melt. Still fascinates me so thanks for the more detailed information.
@@MSCoutdoors yes Indeed, I have walked that part several times allready, as moiry is a spectacular view not to miss when you stay in Grimentz or Zinal…. Also Nice to know, If you Come down col du tsate or col de torrent, and you go over the Hill and you start to see the dam and moiry Lake, on sunny days you can spot the shuny part of the cabane from there…. And even better, on the first days of snow, you can follow the hike trail up the side of the last Climb, It had Nice contrast in the white snow…. Its a very nice region Indeed! I was there about 10 times over the last years, ranging from early June, until mid september…. And every time you find surprises in the most Sunny valley of te Alps (and it really is!)…..
I would like to prep for that trail and do it somewhere jun/july 2025
I am planning similar route . How long is your trek from Col de Balme to chalet des Grands and to Champex?
2.5 miles col de balme to des Grands, 8.5 to chamoex from des Grands.
Nice trek. Definitely one I would enjoy to do. Possiblity to continue next year with the Tour of the Monte Rosa ? ;-)
Thanks, you won't be disappointed.
Crikey Moses! Glad you made it safely to the hut!
Thanks Michael, one not to forget!
Whoa. Very dodgy. It must have been a massive relief to finally arrive at the Europahutte. For anyone watching this video in preparation for their own hike along the Walkers Haute, we walked up the valley from St Niklaus to Herbriggen and then headed up the mountain from there. It was a nice hike. I also had a little chuckle about your comment about the last day's hike. We also assumed that it was pretty much all downhill so we weren't mentally prepared for the numerous uphill bits that we had to tackle. Probably not an issue for you 2 mountain goats though?
Thanks Graeme! Yes its a day I want to forget but will never forget. Its could have all gone very badly, thankfully we made it through. It just shows you how easy things can go wrong when your on the mountains. I have done a lot of trekking but have never had a day as scary as that one. Yes, day 14 is a bit more uphill than I thought as well. Little steep sections mainly, thankfully a total contrast to day 13 for us.
Wow lads that day could have easily gone T-up for you. I had to laugh when you were sure the route sign couldn't be correct, just sounded like me! Hats off for battling through, i bet the others in the hutt that night could not believe it.
Yes Ian we got through it, but it could have been big trouble for us if it went wrong. At one point, we were preparing to bivvy out for the night, but thankfully, we made it to the cabin. I think everyone was amazed we got through it safely. Don't want another day like that.
My son and I hiked 2/3 of the TMB and then switched over to the Haute Route. Cabane du Moiry was our least favorite cabane/refuge. Best location, but it was packed totally full, the water was out(!), and the food was the worst of the trip possibly due to their water issues. Best Cabane was Bonatti which had the 2nd best location, among the best food and probably the best facility.
Hi John, yes Moiry was a fantastic location without doubt, but let down badly by its commercialism. For me the best was Des Dix followed by Louvie, both great.
Yet another inspiring video lads. Hoping age and ailments don't prevent us from following in your footsteps in the future.
Thanks again, Ian, for your nice comments. Yes, I will keep doing it for as long as I am able. One step at a time, and you get there.
Big effort going to the summit, then the descent all the way to St Niklaus. You guys are gluttons for punishment. Pity about the clouds though. We had clear sunny skies that day and the views from some spots were stunning. But I guess we're all at the mercy of the weather gods when we're out hiking.
Thanks Graeme, nice comments again from you. Yeah, we like to do it the hard way. (Wait until you see day 13). Even though we had the clouds, it still made for a great atmospheric outing. Everyone on that day all went straight over the pass and missed out on a nice summit. So we had the benefit of the summit and ridge to ourselves and the bonus of that break in the clouds.
