Hello, With the Great War being a promenant feature in history, I believed that it was worth a video. The issue is the fact that during the war, there were so many changes to the uniform and equipment that I could not do it justice in one video. So, in this first part of the two episodes on WW1, I will be covering the WW1 Tommy on the Western Front in 1914. Thank you to Battlefield History TV (...

The DLI, the forefather of the Light Infantry. My Battlion was renamed 7th Battlion Light Infantry ( Durham) in 1989 before I joined the regulars. It's now called the 8th Battlion the Rifles. My great grandfather's unit was virtually wiped out during the Somme and there was only a few men left including my great grandfather and they were transferred to the DLI to replace their losses. He held them with such affection and respect for the rest of his life.
Nice to see younger generation taki g interest My grandad would of worn all that in Normandy
Excellent overview, Matthew. In a previous life (the 80s), I did an impression of a British soldier (51st Highland Division, 42nd Black Watch) so this brings back a lot of memories.
Bravo, Matthew!
As my DL would say if he was unimpressed with the ironing. Did you iron that with a brick. Death by other means would follow.
Mens participation in war represents men's weakness and fawning to female gynocentrism. The communists destroy men with feminism and the conservatives destroy men with chivalry.
Cool well thanks 😊
Excellent content.
Good vid, mate! Relax...
Great video, very informative.
interesting about the leather webgear being cheaper back then. i imagine it would be the opposite nowadays.

Excelente video! Muy ilustrativo. Saludos!
Very interesting ciao
It's nice to see a lad of the right age displaying all this kit as well rather than an overweight 45 to 50 year old.
My grandad used the bren in Egypt in ww2 . He would have been familiar with all of this kit.
Fantastic! Do you know anything about his time in the Army?
Lovely countryside where you live! Lucky son of a gun :)
I am not aware there was this misconception. I am appalled. In the netherlands i never came across this. The dutch have much more to be ashamed off
I'm a huge fan of these videos of yours.
Thankyou, it's great to hear this!
This is an excellent video, very well presented, very informative. Thank you for making it!
Well done young man!
You make your point well, and no reasonable man would disagree, given what was known and believed at the time. That doesn’t mean that the Brit-bashers won’t show up.
Nooooo, Britain also totally didnt murder Sikorski and did not sell Poland to Stalin at Yalta... Brits. Not the slightest spark of decency, nor a spine to admit a f up. Absolutely pathetic.
How common would double shot be
Are you referring to the amount of powder in a a cartridge?
Mein Gott man.
Even in the darkest hours of the war the United kingdom still had taken in her allies soilders to the safety of her own shores. She cloved, armed, and housed the Free armes and navies of the French, Polish, Belgians, Dutch, Greeks, Czechoslovakians, Yugoslavians, Norwegians, Danish, Luxembourgers, Albanian, and even the royal Italian armies. And remember that the British empire freed most of western Europe long before the channel islands
Poland got a bill after the war for the equipment which the Polish soldiers have used to defend Britains freedom and after the war they were not allowed to participate in the victory parade.
@@corneliussulla1313… I notice that Poland wasn’t expected to pay Britain’s bill for a war that they entered to defend Poland’s freedom.
What about Narvik, Norway? The allies left without a word of warning, both British and French soldiers
Yes, there is that, I decided not to include it as I thought it was outside of the focus time frame of Post-Dunkirk. However, that does open up space for a pt.2 arguing the opposing view.

Well done young man!

British, your jacket is too short, if you raise your hands your navel will be visible.
Very Good video!
Thankyou, got some more planned for 2023!
Lesson of istory!!
It's very nice..
Hello my friend! I love your videos, I also have a ww1 british uniform, and I have an airsoft SMLE.
For a theatrical production we rented some ww1 uniforms and and there was something like the modified ground sheet you showed. It had a rubberised outer and a lining that felt rather like corduroy. Warmest, most useful thing. Are you familiar with such an item? I’m wondering if I can find any more information.
From what what you've told me, it sounds more like a Private Purchase Officers Raincape. However, I shall have a look around and do some research and if anything matches it, I shall let you know. However, like I said, it sounds to me like a private purchase item.
