Приєднався 26 тра 2021
Hi my name is Jon and I am a Kiwi tramper who loves the outdoors. I try to go for a day or over night tramp every weekend over the spring, summer and autumn. I am working my way through the Great Walks of New Zealand and section trekking the Te Araroa Trail. I'm also interested in outdoor equipment, walking for fitness, thru hiking, camping, fishing, MTB riding, vlogging, blogging and photography.
Godley Head Defence installation, Part 2
I did a trip back in December to the defense installations at Godley Head on the Port Hills.
In the late 1930's an extensive network of coastal fortifications was built on Godley Head at the mouth of Lyttleton Harbor. These defenses were meant to repel any amphibious forces from landing at Lyttleton. They consisted of a battery of 6" naval guns and the supporting searchlight, observation, fire correction and ancillary services.
The defense works were used from 1938 to the mid 1950's when they were decommissioned. They are now administered by a local trust.

Camping near Port Levy Saddle
Переглядів 239Місяць тому
I went for another overnight trip to a location near Port Levy Saddle. Following the track to Rod Donald Hut I went about halfway there before going off the track to find a wild camping spot. I erected my tent and had dinner and looked at the scenery around me.

I went out to Bottle Lake Plantation and spent the night camping recently. Bottle Lake Plantation is to the north of Christchurch and I used bus transport to reach it. I camped in the dunes not far from Spencer Park.
Orson Raider XL1 person tent

I look at my Orson XL Raider 1 person tent. At 1.75 kg this tent is heavier than some others but for $350 dollars it is a good buy. I intend to use the tent for one person tent camping.

It was such a nice day that i did the circuit around Halswell Quarry Park. I walked up the track towards the Crater Rim Walkway and did a circuit around the quarry there. The Quarry was continuous in use from the 1860 right up to 1990 when it closed.

This is my return voyager from Lake Daniell to the road end at the campground at Marble Hill. It was much better weather on the homeward leg and I enjoyed sun as I walked out to my car.

My tramping equipment- MSR Hubba Tent
Переглядів 3007 місяців тому
I take a look at my MSR tent that I brought to replace my Big Agnes tent. The tent is excellent for the role as it weighs just a little over 1 kg and is water proof to 1500 mm.

Booking fees for the Cottage.. Sunday to Thursday: $76 for up to 4 people, Friday and Saturday: $94 for up to 4 people. Great video Thanks! Might head up there myself shortly.
Glad you liked it
Good to see that it's open again!
Lovely video, I live in Lyttelton and the campsite has been shut for years due to asbestos. Really excited to take my little ones up for a camp now it's open!
That's great to hear - it's a wonderful spot!
How are these after long term use..
Setting the stove upside down puts the fuel tablet close to the bottom of the canteen cup, the most efficient way to heat water. Here in Australia I use the British Pattern mess tins. Thank you for sharing 👍
Good man
Very calming thanks :)
Good on ya John. Nothing better than a good bush adventure.
Hi John, do you still have your website blog? I used to enjoy reading those. Cheers
Thx., the video
You do realize no-one gives a rat-f*ck about watching videos of someone eating food like it's some sort of special attraction for viewers right?
Alot of UA-camrs who do camping videos include the cooking & eating, if you don't like it, then don't watch it! Sod off!!!
@@chrisamy3285 Oh! Maybe show some paint drying as another additional exciting scene in the next vid then ... Carry on sweetie ... Next...
midge ure?
3000mm and 5000mm static head. 3000cm is equal to 30m which is close to 100feet 😊. This tent is way over priced, look at the 3ful Taigi 1, €161 on camperlist. Greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪.
Nice tent. 👍9
Its a good looking tent. Im pretty tall and finding something that I don't touch the top and/or the bottom of the tent is rare.
Hi Jon. loving the content you're putting up, very much the format I'd probably put up if I wasn't so lazy as to not get out there. I used to tramp quite a bit and seeing your videos I miss it, your content is giving me a nudge to get my A into G and stop making excuses. It's one thing to watch it it's a whole other thing to experience it 🙂
You can set off and if it proves to difficult you can always turn back. You get a good view of the waterfall from the bridge
Ill be going in 3 weeks but wonder how difficult this walk might be with so many stepa. I am in my 60s and although happy to walk on level and genlte slopes a lot of steps can be hard for my back. Can you give me an idea of level of difficulty please?
Man, you sure picked a wet day to walk in. How long was the walk to the hut? Great video thank you.
Thank you for sharing
Thanks
Great set of videos covering the trip. I think you're the only person who has filmed a decent amount of footage enroute. Feels much more like we're walking along with you. Well paced. Was it April?
Much appreciated!
Be bad if the snow was inside the windows. Thanks for the video! Might have to check that hut out sometime.
Your welcome
I've got the 2 person version also bought a few extra pegs but usually just add rocks etc for stability. Thanks for vid!!
Nice very informative video, thank you!!
😅
I like me the more savory than sweet treats for tramping.
Really love the minimalism- eat breakfast out of the plastic bag - no cleaning. Genius
Beautiful video. Thank you for sharing. subd and 👍8
Thank you too
Ta for video. Brings back some great memories of my 6 months in NZ some 20 years ago.
You're welcome
Jesus the gorse on that trail looks a bit menacing. I'd hate to trip and fall into that stuff it looks like it would hurt. Do you know what the trees they killed actually were, are they an invasive species?
Love that tuna like that it's a great protein boost while tramping.
It really is!
I like Quail Island but it wouldn't take much to make the place busy.
No. That happened on another track....
Cheers for the info. Looks like a beautiful track. I'm not sure if your a New Zealander or Australian but you should really put some respect and mana into your pronunciation. Quite embarrassing. Sorry for the criticism but just saying. Those beautiful places deserve some effort put into how you should say it. There is a purari river in Papua New Guinea. Maybe you mean Po ro ra ri. Cheers for sharing mate
Great video! How far into the walk is the first flat?
It's about 25 minutes
We are hoping to do this walk in a month or so, coming over from Wales. Very useful information, thanks for sharing.
Thanks guys...
😥 Hope your okay John. Wishing you a speedy recovery!
Hope your okay. Take care
Guided huh, lol, Bet the guide jokes haven't improved, best job I ever had. Best way to do the Milford, I walked with them in March, and was guiding the following season.
Good to see you back on trail mate. Nice to watch queen Charlotte track section again as was a bit of a blur for me, as I did it in 2 days. You carrying on threw to the Richmonds?
Nice review. I went with the Trangia model. Did the pouch come with the lixada stove? Also what make is your watch? cheers
Good job. Track looks good.
Ahhh, the years do roll away! I cooked many a canteen cup meal during my time in Vietnam (66-67). We sometimes came across small VC rice dumps in those days and a bit of boiled rice mixed with the rather meagre (Aussie) 24 hour ration pack offerings could make a filling meal. I've heard of soldiers in later times ditching their hexi cookers in favour of gas canister stoves, but I wouldn't have been too keen to do that. The thought of a tracer round going through the old butt pack during a firefight (happened to me once) and hitting a gas canister doesn't bear thinking about! Good vdeo. Keep up the good work.
Can one wild camp in a tent on this track?
Yes you can....provided you are 200 meters away from the track you are allowed to camp just about anywhere on the Conservation estate....
*promo sm*
Take it you carry toilet paper and matches/lighter in a separate setup ?
Is that one named after Samuel Manson or someone else?
No that is one named after victims of a landslide
