Shout looks the same Rihno and Maverick same at tv broadcast.
Yes. Maverick used the same masters for their DVD as was used for UK television. So they would look the same. Shout used the masters that Rhino had used for their remastering. But they fixed the animation errors that were in the Rhino release. So the visual quality is about the same. But you don't see Ironhide drive into the frame...and then transformers from robot to car.
I am waiting for a blu ray remaster. Not sure why Maverick is showing a Season 2 opening over a Season 1 intro.
The masters they had were missing the intro and outro. Thet did have the intro and outro of season 2. So they attached that to their release.
4:28 yo it’s hubcap
Besides using incomplete elements with animation errors, Rhino made a terrible transfer (even the 3:2 pulldown is botched) and then slathered it with noise reduction and added awful new sound effects when remixing the audio from the original four-track elements. And the title cards use a thicker, incorrect font for the “Written By:” text (on top of the alterations to the onscreen titles of two episodes), and the end credits fonts are all wrong with new errors. Instead of just using the broadcast masters, Shout! stuck with Rhino’s trash and made it worse by compressing the Hell out of that footage, resulting in horrid artifacts (Prime gets it really bad). The true shame of it all is that when Shout! actually inserted broadcast master footage, they color-corrected it, and it actually looks quite nice overall with vibrant colors that also retain the depth of color that even Rhino themselves admitted were lost when they made their transfers of the film. I think the worst thing of all is that Rhino’s remaster set an awful precedent for ‘80s and ‘90s cartoons that were originally mastered on video, as even Batman: The Animated Series’s Blu-ray remaster has a bunch of episodes that have animation errors that never made it to air, plus some that were corrected for reruns/the original DVD releases.
Back home in the early 2001, Maverick is the version that always plays for Filipino channel.
Maverick's definitely superior!
I always thought so.
I have the original Rhino version that came in the cases with the cell cards and it’s insane on surround sound as is the GI Joe.
Rhino is the version on the official Hasbro yt channel Why is it so bad
Are the Maverick versions region free? If not, then buying them isn't worth it.
Yes, I believe Maverick was region free.
@@RaymondTF4Ever Are they still region free?
@@GideonMadu The coding on the discs can't change. So yeah, they should still be region free. However, the were released back in 2000 and were recalled when Metrodome acquired the licence and released their version in the UK. So the Maverick release is not easy to find anymore.
@@RaymondTF4Ever oof. Guess I'll get the Shout Factory version
I hate to say this but the TV Broadcast is BETTER because you can see the detail as for the others there so Dark that you Don't notice the detail work that went into the drawing of these scenes. So before you Judge give credit to the people that took a lot of time to draw and paint these scenes that we enjoy Today. In other words the Hard Way NOT the easy CGI Way.
Too bad I have the worst one, Rhino.
Maverick yes yes yes Rhino no no no
For what it's worth, Rhino had the worst of the problems, but hey, at least it gave us a yellow cliffjumper in reference to Cliffjumper having a yellow version of his toy in the G1 toyline. It's still inferior to the other versions. So we can all agree that Rhino has all the the defects and inferior sound mixing as the worst version in all four seasons?
Another DBZ orange brick situation
funny enough I prefer the Rhino releases warts and all the colors seemed more vibrant and right
Oh theres a worse Rhino one out there than this XD
I know. The reason I chose this episode was purely because I happened to have that one lifted from my VHS tapes. And also, it complimented Jim Sorenson and Chris McFeely's panel at TFNation at that time. 😉 ua-cam.com/video/9WTPlFW9JSE/v-deo.html
Rhino has some inaccuracies. 3:39 Starscream has the colours of Skywarp, 4:28. Bumblebee changes into Cliffjumper 12:15 Skywarp suddenly has Starscream's colours, while the latter one is standing next to him. Also 17:14 and 17:18 show some differences.
I think that's because Rhino got their hands on the original print before it got sent back to have the issues fixed before broadcast.
Wow, never realized just how numerous the errors in the Rhino version were.
Yep! It's a whopper, alright! 😉
Tv broadcast was better the sound effects were intact
Do you have any other episodes of Transformers on VHS from back in the day, which you could possibly put up on here in full? Could you even just put up the full VHS version of this episode, please?
I've recorded every single episode back in the day. Unfortunately, at present, I don't have the means to convert them right now. And I would have to dig through literally hundreds of videotapes. And I currently don't have the free time to transfer them all. Not to mention that the tapes are now 40 years old...
@@RaymondTF4Ever 👍
Those of you who go "I like extra shot of Megatron landing", "I like Optimus' eyes" - knock it off. This isn't a matter of personal preference. The footage that was aired is what was intended, THAT is what matters.
Plus that shot of Megs landing looks awful and so out of place.
It's not even a unique extra shot, it's likely a placeholder/reused shot from much later.
"You're not allowed to have opinions about how something is edited" is a hell of a toxic take.
Interessante.
Why would they b different & being that they r which is this the audio of?
TV Broadcast is the finished product. Maverick used the master tapes they used in the UK for the TV broadcast. Long story short, Rhino used unfinished master tapes and attempted to fix errors that were on this early version of the episodes. Shout! Factory took the version that Rhino had created and fixed the errors that they created. I used the audio of the Shout! Factory version.
Great episode!
the inro started as the same as the others for tv broadcast I should know I watched it when I was younger
The TV Broadcast is from what I recorded on my VCR back in the day, on Sky Channel. They were on a Saturday morning cartoon show called Fun Factory. And they would sometimes cut the intro and outro off the episodes to allow more time for the main show. On Sky Channel there also were no commercial breaks. So no need for bumpers.
@@RaymondTF4Ever I also watched on tv and the channel I watched on showed the inro
@@RaymondTF4Ever l watched on Sky too & don't remember them ever not showing the intro & end credits.
@@TF80s They did show intro and outro on their self-contained airing from Monday through Friday. But rarely, if ever, on Fun Factory or the DJ Kat Show. From what I remember...
God I love videos like this ❤ thank you so much
I'm glad I managed to get some maverick DVD , since they are closer to the TV Broad cast in terms of colours and mistakes. Rhino created too many new mistakes for my liking. Remasters made the colours a little too bold and vibrant. Unfortunately the most widely availible version seems to be the Rhino one , especially for Streaming and youtube. That's the one most fans are going to be familiar with and are under the impression all those new mistakes were present in the original TV broadcast. Which is a little unfair when it comes to poking fun at the show's quality control in general.
Praying for an ultimate Blu-ray remaster correcting many errors that still linger
But then... How many squares can I then fit in a single frame??? 😭
@@RaymondTF4Everlife finds a way
How would they go about doing a Blu-Ray release. They would need to use the original broadcast tapes for the final edit, and fill in the rest from film scans. I'd like to see them at least try instead of upscaling the already existing DVD master.
Rhino worked with masters that Hasbro owned. Sunbow had its own set of master tapes as did Sony in Japan. Sunbow was bought by Metrodome. But several years ago Metrodome sold their Sunbow library back to Hasbro. The state of the tapes that Hasbro had was poor. But I don't know if the version that Sunbow had was any better. I won't hold my breath for Sony to help out. So I doubt we'll ever get a clean, true to the original version of the show on a home media release.
@@RaymondTF4Ever , you don't think Toei has any 35mm assets like they did for Transformers the movie. The Blu-Ray and 4K disc of the 1986 movie came from an interpositive.
@@matthewgaudet4064 From what I understand, whatever Toei had is now owned by Sony Japan. And Sony in Japan has a history of not wanting to play nice with others. 😞
@@RaymondTF4Ever Especially Western owned companies right?
@@MisterSandmanAU Yep! Sony rarely releases their stuff to the outside world. The only reason we got the Japanese G1 shows on DVD, was because of a loophole that Sunbow, and by extension Metrodome, held the same media rights to release footage on Home Media. It is the same reason why Robots In Disguise 2001 was never released in the US. Sony blocked its release and still does to this day.
I remember my parents having the Maverick DVD release of Season 1, which had the Season 2 opening and ending credits for Heavy Metal War with the Season 1 soundtrack. I do not regret watching that version, because THAT WENT HARD.
I like the original TV Broadcast best. Best colors.
Yeah, it's not bad for a 35 year old VHS tape that I recorded from Sky Channel's Fun Factory back in the 80s! 😉
@@RaymondTF4Ever that's where l used to watch it too...was this recording before they start putting commercial breaks in their cartoons? When it was still just Sky Channel and DJ Kat hung out with Lynda D'Mol? Those were the days 😉
I'd e curious to know if there's any 16mm or 35mm print hanging around
I like rhino is fast
The original has those colors of richness that just feels so exciting. I appreciate other colors being added but they all just feel to dark compared to the original. Maybe one day someone will keep the original vibrancy and enhance it. Appreciate this video and my ocd is happy 🤣🤣🤣
Just keep in mind, the TV Broadcast in this video is just a grab from a 35-year-old VHS tape that I had recorded the episode on back in 1984. ;)
@@RaymondTF4Evercolors still look the best
@@RaymondTF4Ever well it still looks great to me...even better than the Maverick dvd version.
@@TF80sThe colors on the Maverick DVD version are literally the exact fucking same as in the TV broadcast.
Honestly, a proper remaster would blow all of those out of the water. Just as we've seen with HD remaster of TF:TM.
Never heard of Maverick. When did they make a DVD?
Maverick Entertainment released season 1 on DVD in 2000 in the UK. They were the first to release an entire season on DVD. They released the movie the following year. Unfortunately by 2002, Maverick closed down before they could release season 2.
I find it so interesting how all four versions have their own quirks and differences. Like Rhino seems to be the best at times, having the Cliffjumper and extra Megatron landing scene at 5:10, or Prime’s eye glint at 5:47, or even Megatron’s walk at 11:16, yet at that exact same shot, it’s also the worst colored. It seems to have more coloring problems than the others, and didn’t even include Scrapper’s optic glowing at 8:35. Not to mention Scrapper’s machine glowing was done the worst in that version. Shout seems though to correct most mistake that all the others have. Very cool to see all these at the same time, thank you for uploading this!
You are welcome.
What mistakes did you notice in the tv broadcast & Maverick versions that Shout is supposed to have fixed?
Agreed! Depending on which version and at one point they all have great points. too bad we can't get a best of all of them in one.
@@TF80sThe only thing I noticed that seems to be consistent across every version is that Laserbeak’s head is a light gray in THIS EPISODE SPECIFICALLY and I don’t know why. Also, another error that’s consistent across every version is Devastator’s eyes.
There are some extra scenes and details in the Rhino version. @5:11 Megatron landing. @5:50 Optimus's eye have a highlight
Do yiu plan on doinf more G1 episode conparisons like this?? That'd be so cool!!
I wasn't planning on it. This was purely done to show the differences between Maverick (UK), Rhino and Shout! Factory. I might do a TV Broadcast vs DVD release on some Energon episodes... Because they changed things between the two media as well. If I ever have the free time to do those. Because at the moment free time is in limited supply for me. :-(
TV Broadcast then Maverick all the way...l wish Maverick had done all seasons. I also wish I'd kept all the vhs recordings l made of the show when it originally aired here.
Yep, me too.
I need my Constructicons bright green, not pale yellow! 🚫💛💚✅️😂
😂
The Shout Factory version has all of the the right colors.
My friend has bright green ones, they were knock off versions of them. Maybe this is where they got the idea to make them bright green lol.
You’ll hate Tonkanator, then. 😂
3:20 I can only hear “With c*ck and ball torture the auto bots will bow down to the decepticons”
Good lord, what is going on with Rhino?
When Rhino got the rights to redistribute G1, they had wanted to remaster it for DVD release. By that time the original broadcast master tapes of these episodes had degraded, so they instead opted to use pre-broadcast masters instead which had better visual clarity and picture quality. Unfortunately the pre-broadcast tapes had a lot unfinished animations so they suffered from more animation errors, unfinished visual effects, and coloring mistakes that weren't present in the original broadcasts. When Shout Factory acquired the distribution rights, they corrected most of the errors that cropped up from the Rhino releases.
They basically remastered the non-finalized animation that would have been fixed behind the scenes because that’s apparently all the footage they could find at the time.
@@kaylemathewcomendador6964 Same happened with Rhino's DVD release of the GI Joe tv series. They used the pre-video edited versions which had many differences and all the uncorrected misspelling of English signs, text and such. Though it also resulted in many shots being uncropped, allowing you to see areas of the background you couldn't during broadcast. One of which even featured a nude painting... =P
@@GDark08 "By that time the original broadcast master tapes of these episodes had degraded" Whoever is spreading that nonsense should stop. Rhino wanted to remaster the show, yes. They went to film reels as that is what you do when you remaster the footage. Problem is that they were careless about WHICH footage they used, leading to much of season 1 using WORKPRINTS that were never ever meant to be seen by the public (it's the initial result that the production gets to review and make a list of things to be redone). The broadcast master (VIDEO) tapes degrading comes from ShoutFactory in response to why their release didn't use those from start to finish like they've done with Jem. And frankly, chances are they mistook defects that were always there as something new (tracking error atop "Burden hardest to bear", damaged bit in "Killing Jar"... all which can be seen duplicated in Japanese 80's broadcast master).
@@Grim2 Well someone ought to tell the people that edit TFWiki that, because that is where I recall I had read about that.
Happy 40th anniversary Transformers!!!!!
MAVERICK AND TV BROADCAST VERSION
Shout is a better version
Well... Maverick was true to the original broadcasting as they used the same masters as was used for TV. But it was not digitally remastered like Shout!'s version is. But they cleaned up the mess that Rhino was stuck with. So their version have their own set of errors that never made it to air back in the 80s.
@@RaymondTF4Ever maverick used ss2 g1 intro
@@sestrecrazy Yes. That's because the TV master reels they had had the intro and outro cut off. And they only had the physical film of the intro and outro of season 2. But the actual episodes were identical.
The Shout DVDs are a horribly overcompressed, aliased mess.
@@RaymondTF4Ever no, they're rerun masters. maverick had braodcast masters from 1985/1987, so those where season 2 era airings of season 1, season 3 airings too.
