10 Gift Ideas For Musicians - Happy Christmas!
Переглядів 154 години тому
Do you need a gift for a musician in your life? Here are 10 ideas that might prompt you to think of something they would really enjoy. Do be careful about trying to buy a musician the next big piece of gear as they have probably researched that already. If they tell you exactly what they want that is fine, but if you want to surprise them these ideas should get you started. I hope you find it a...
Cue Breakdown - VICTORY - TV & Film Composing
Переглядів 199 годин тому
Here is a nice little victory style cue to have a look at. The idea is to build tension with ascending notes through the track and reach a happy end. There is a breakdown in the middle which is less intense, then low drums come in for the final section. A lot of the orchestral instruments are from Abbey Road One. I hope you find it interesting and maybe use it as a template to create your own s...
Real Time Composing - JAZZ NOIRE - Part 3/3

In this final part we are going to tidy up some bits of timing, then go through the EQ for each instrument. We’ll need to check the levels are working as we expect and make sure the automation is working. To finish we’ll add a fade to the master output and use the Logic Mastering Assistant… Have fun, Dex :) #composer #realtime #musiccomposing #composingmusic #composing
How To Play PICKING UP THE PIECES by Paloma Faith - On Keyboard
Переглядів 2512 годин тому
This is a great tune that will get your audience up dancing and singing along with you. It's great for a female vocal and has some great backing lines too. On piano the hardest bit is getting the arpeggiated patterns going in time with the drum beat, but once you've got that sorted the rest is pretty simple. I hope you have fun arranging this with your band. Dex :) #musictheory #keyboardtutoria...

MELANCHOLY Cue Breakdown - TV & Film Composing
Переглядів 72День тому
Here is a melancholy cue written in the standard ABA format using bisected tenths to create the underlying chords. Remember we are always trying to add layers as we progress through the track with a breakdown in the middle. I hope you find it interesting and maybe inspires you to write something similar. In this session I will be arranging the parts to create the full cue. We will need to create a breakdown section and add an ending. It's also the time to think about how the different layers interact with each other and build in intensity as it goes along. Have fun, Dex :) #composer #realtime #musiccomposing #composingmusic #composing
How To Play JOLENE (Cover Version) by Miley Cyrus - On Keyboard

Here's a quick way to play JOLENE by Miley Cyrus and her band from the 'backyard sessions' they did. There are only 3 chords in the whole songs and it's really fun to arrange with your band. Here is a FREE Trumpet sample that is great for a jazz feel. It was mentioned to me by Jim who frequently comments on here. I had to pass it on to you because it does sound pretty good. I'm not sponsored by the company, so this is an honest opinion, although I probably wouldn't bother making a video about something I don't like. I hope you find it useful and it is still free in the future. Chee...

Here is a fun Happy Jingle that features piano, bass, mandolin with percussion and glockenspiel. There are a few other elements, but we are following the usual pattern of having a breakdown in the middle, with some edit points to make sure it is usable by an editor. How to play NEVER FORGET YOU by Noisettes - On Keyboard

I love playing this tune in my band, and it’s actually quite simple to learn even though there is a key change half way through. Even if people don't recognise the title, everybody should remember some of the lyrics as it had a lot of radio play. Cue Breakdown - HORROR CUE - TV & Film Composing
Переглядів 4421 день тому
Welcome to this Cue Breakdown where we are looking at a Horror cue. There are quite a few layers to this and while the bass is centred around E, there is chromatic movement to give a sense of uncertainty. The vocals performed here were taken from an iPhone recording straight into Logic and processed quite heavily, but give a really unnerving feeling to the whole track, so well done to Florence ...

Great FREE Theremin - SECRET LINK (In Video) for Halloween Fun!
OMG!!! That's something that always gets me on Logic, Dex, so thanks! Cheers!
Yeah, annoyingly it's not a problem with Logic settings, but iOS. When it happened to me with the new Mac mini it took me ages to find out what was wrong, hence the video. Cheers :)
I'll take them all, Dex! Cheers!!
Ha... yeah me too! :)
I enjoy your cue breakdowns, Dex, because you tend to show that a very full track can be constructed with only 10 or so tracks as opposed to those who feel the need to double or triple that amount. Such a move (the doubling or tripling of tracks to build a track) can be intimidating for those who are less experienced composers. Cheers, Dex! Great, and fun, Cue Breakdown!
Thanks Jim, yes these are definitely on the low side of the track count, but doesn't mean they can't sound big. I've chosen them for that reason to be honest as a full orchestral cue would take ages to talk through and has much more going on. It also applies to the Real Time Composing as I'm not sure people want to see 48 hours of content on one track! :) Cheers to a relaxing Sunday my friend :)
It’s fun to see this completed! This clip inspired me to do something a bit different in a similar genre/manner. Once it’s complete I’ll share it with you. So you’re now over 620 subscribers and climbing. Good content with an enjoyable delivery makes for a successful channel, Dex, and you’re well on your way. Cheers, my friend.
Thanks Jim, it would be great to hear what you are up to and am happy this has inspired you a little bit too. The subs keep going up slowly, but like you say creating good content is my aim... hopefully the subscribers continue to grow. Cheers, Dex :)
I must obviously showing my place in culture and time since I have NO idea who Paloma Faith is... individual or group? Cheers, Dex! Here's to a great weekend! Enjoy!
Ha ha... she is brilliant and so down to earth as a person, and happens to have an amazing voice. The singer in my band loves her and luckily can replicate the performance, she doesn't really need the rest of us! Here's to a good weekend... Cheers, Dex :)
I still need to be able to update to Logic 11... I'll do so sometime next year because I recently upgraded to Mac OS 12 as 13 wasn't yet the most compatible with other plugins. Logic 11 looks really great, but it's more an issue of prepping to get an Apple Silicon Mac before making the upgrade. Oy! Cheers, Dex!
Have you looked at the new Mac Mini M4? I think Apple have shot themselves in the foot with that pricing! Super powerful machine for entry level cost.
@@DexWilliamsMusic Beyond the new video reviews, I've not taken a closer look. Yeah, it would seem that Apple may have shot themselves in the foot, but I also believe that the Mac Studio is going to replace many of the Mac Pro purchases, while the new M4 Mac Mini will replace many of the Mac Studio purchases. I also believe that the Mac Studio is more than likely a better alternative for some musicians and composers, especially those who have templates with 100 tracks. That's why I asked you what your average and highest track counts are simply because I wanted to get a better idea of your composition workload.
I can't remember where I read it, but somebody did a test with over 200 VST tracks and the M4 was fine. I think my highest track count is around 100, but average maybe 15-20.
Very wonderful example of melancholy in music with a very good resolution of that tension at the end. 4 AM here as I write… not feeling 100% this morning, and could no longer lie down… saw your morning video and happy that I did. Cheers, Dex!
Thanks Jim, I would prescribe a day of relaxing and taking it easy. Hope you feel better soon :)
Glad you liked Bell and Bone! Fun video, Dex! Cheers!
Yeah, that was a great shout, thanks Jim :)
Fun video, Dex! Double Mac Mini setup? Do you compose using a Mac Mini, or do you use a Mac Studio, or something else? I'm still on a Trash Can Mac now running Mac OS 12 and need to update to 13, but may wait until I pick up a Mac Studio sometime next year. Cheers!
I've now dedicated the Mac Mini M4 to Logic... it's really quick... Then the other Mac Mini M2 runs everything else. I'm really enjoying it so far. Cheers to a good weekend, Dex :)
@@DexWilliamsMusic Wow!! The Mac Mini M4 is THAT good? Interesting!! Is it a base model or did you beef it up? Love to learn how you configured it. I was thinking about getting a used Mac Studio M2 Max with 32 GB of RAM and at least 512 SSD, but since the SSD can now be upgraded, as it can in the new M4 Mac Mini, I'm less concerned about SSD storage. So did you get the M4 or the M4 Max version?
Standard M4 chip... I did go for the 32Gb RAM, but no extra storage. Everything is on an external 4Tb SSD.
@@DexWilliamsMusic My Trash Can Mac has 128 GB of RAM, which for me is overkill, but I also have a Thunderbolt II 4 drive bay with 1 and 2 TB SSDs for sample library storage and work files for me other work. While I know that the M4 Mac Mini is Thunderbolt 4 or 5, I can still use my current Thunderbolt II carrier with slower speeds... no biggie as far as I'm concerned. What's your average track count versus your highest track count and do you do a lot of bounce in place to accomodate higher track counts? Just curious. It's funny, but in some ways it feels like Apple is shooting themselves in the foot with this new M4 Mac Mini, especially if it displaces a lot of Mac Studio sales. Oh well... at least the end user has better choices than ever before. Cheers... and thanks for your input, Dex!
I was thinking about a Studio, but the basic 64Gb RAM version I was looking at was £2,500... The M4 with 32Gb came in at £1200. But because I can now offload all the RAM hogging Browser windows and other OBS recording/streaming programs I think I'm going to have a similar result for half the cost. Next step is to try some live streaming, because that was causing errors in Logic so I stopped. Thinking of which... what time does live streaming work for you lot over the pond? weekend and weekday. Obviously I'm trying not to do it in the middle of the night for me (I could do early morning though!) :)
GREAT!! Much better than the symphonic trumpet from BBC SO. Yeah, it has a bit of an odd quality, but it DOES fit the track. If you went to Project Sam 2 you would find a film noir patch that has the perfect drums for this track. Anywho... great video. Glad to have been some help. Cheers, Dex!
Yeah I really like it so thanks for the suggestion Jim... Let's hope I can make it work in the cue! Cheers, Dex :)
@@DexWilliamsMusic I have every faith in you to make it work and be fun, too!
Ha... cheers Jim :)
Another very fun and enjoyable cue, Dex! Cheers to a restful Sunday!
Thanks for the heads-up about Libre Wave... those horns will definitely be going on the Jazz Noire Real Time next week! Have a great Sunday yourself, Cheers :)
Thank you man, this video is amazing.
Glad it helped!... Sometimes you just need to think about things in a different way and they become obvious! Cheers, Dex :)
Hey Dex... I see that you've surpassed the 600 subscriber mark! Congrats! I enjoyed this video. However, there are two libraries (and free ones as well) that would lend themselves well to writing this... Librewave's Bell and Bone, and Project Sam's The Free Orchestra 2. TFO2 has a Film Noire category with a great upright bass and the drums typical of the genre, while Bell and Bone has several articulations that lend themselves to this, along with a variety of mutes that can be chosen. Take a look at both of them... you'll probably end up using them in another video. Cheers to you my friend!
Thanks for the heads-up on those libraries, I've used Project Sam before, but found them a bit odd. Maybe I need to try it again now I've got a dedicated reverb so only need close mic'ed sounds most of the time. I hadn't heard of Bell and Bone, so will give that a listen too. It's always nice to find new stuff... especially if it's free! Cheers Jim :)
Keep it up, Dex! Very good😊
Thanks!... I like these easy ones :)
Video is only in 720p, cant see the fine details of whats going on. great video though. keep em coming, Ill watch every single one
Ha... thanks for the comment. I hadn't noticed the 720p limit... but just realised I've been exporting at 1280, maybe YT can't cut that down to 1080?... I'll try the 1080 setting in the future to see if that makes a difference. Cheers, Dex PS: Here's the playlist with the other 35 Breakdowns ua-cam.com/play/PL3inG2I3XVaZfFYyL8ZMZVVs1IdEnQ1PS.html :)
I love all of us sick Halloween fanatics. lol Great job Dex.
Ha... yeah, I quite like the freedom of doing something that hasn't got to be beat perfect... and more importantly works better if it isn't! Cheers, Dex :)
Fun cue! Cheers! Happy Sunday, Dex!
Thanks Jim, it seems like I've been rushing around all morning... but it's 3pm and time to relax for the rest of the day. Cheers, Dex :)
FINALLY Dex! It's nice to see how this came out! I enjoy these longer cue composing videos since they go more in depth showing that it's not just a magical process, but one more of trial and error and trial again! Cheers!
Thanks Jim, I think the real time videos work well, but they do get mixed reactions and watch time. I'm glad I know at least one person likes them! Cheers, Dex :)
I always enjoy these, Dex! Cheers! Hope you had a Happy Halloween!
Thanks Jim, Halloween was... uneventful!... which suits me :)
Love it Dex. Great job.

What a great description... I think there is so much to come with VR and music production... It's not perfect yet, but a really good bit of progress. I'm encouraged that the VR world developers aren't ignoring composers. Cheers, Dex :)
Great video, Dex! Since I'm at least 10 years older than you (now 68) you missed a decent amount of music from the late 60s and early 70s. As a teen, you could hardly pull me away from Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin, but when you could, I was listening to bands like Chicago and Blood, Sweat, and Tears (BS&T IV is a masterpiece of writing, arranging, AND recording). But I was also a huge fan of Leon Russell... his early and mid career writing (The Wedding Album nearly blew me away with its opening cut Rainbow in Your Eyes recorded on his Stephens 40 track 2" analog machine) was really different and fun. Listening to the early Carpenters songs (especially when Karen Carpenter's voice first comes in after the intro... old Neumann tube mics recorded through a discrete mic preamp provided some of the most stunning detail ever). I also LOVED Gino Vannelli as he was always evolving musically (Mama Coco on Storm at Sunup is only one of MANY examples... any of his albums from the 70s, 80s, and 90s are amazing). All of the 70s singer songwriters... and you cannot forget the late, great Harry Nilsson who became famous without performing a SINGLE CONCERT because he was 1) endorsed by the Beatles and 2) he was extremely talented as a writer, even though he was solely responsible for tanking his own career. I also enjoyed classical music, country, jazz (Herbie Hancock, Stanley Clarke, Dixie Dregs, etc.) as well as artists like David Grisman (Hot Dawg is a great album). Okay... enough! I always listened to records for their sound... their sonic qualities... along with who produced them. Oh yeah... Almost forgot ANYTHING PRODUCED BY Mutt Lange! All of these and more are what have formed, and informed, my composing journey. Cheers!
I love that!... I'll be adding The Carpenters and taking a listen to some of those other too when I get a chance. I love discovering new music. Cheers Jim :)
Once again, Dex, a very stunningly simple track that conveys a heartwarming emotional message. Cheers!
Thanks Jim... just following the KISS method, Cheers, Dex :)
very soothing indeed
Thanks... I enjoy these relaxing cues when they are requested from time to time. Cheers, Dex :)
I’ve been waiting most of the week for parts 2 and 3, so seeing this one today has been fun! Your insight into step by step composition has been very helpful… I can see that some of the libraries I initially shied away from was a bit of an oversight on my part. Thanks again, Dex! Cheers!
More to come!
Cool!👍
Thanks... I love playing this one 👍😍
Another fun How to Play video! I see that you're closing in on 600 subscribers... so happy to see the steady growth of your channel! Cheers, Dex! Jim
Thanks Jim, we're nearly there... and having fun on the way! Cheers, Dex 🍺
Quick tip, turn the metronome off, please. It was distracting.
Thanks for the comment... I usually have it off for these tips, but as I was doing it live I needed it to keep in time. I get your point though and will turn it down a touch.
Yet another fun way to create a 'spooky' track for Halloween. Fun video, Dex! Cheers!
Cheers Jim... I like getting tremolo strings into tracks too! Dex :)
It’s interesting that many cues are written (not just by you, but by many others, from loop based libraries. Must be because they allow for quick production of cues. If one had to come up with all of those complementary rhythms on their own it would take a lot more time. I used to avoid getting loops based libraries but can now see how mixing them in a composition can add to it, while being more efficient with one’s time. Great cue, Dex… fun video, too! Cheers!
Thanks Jim, yes loop libraries can be really useful so long as you remember not to have them in isolation as much as possible. That can lead to confusion for the automated copyright algorithms so I always make sure to layer them or change them in some way to make them unique. Cheers, Dex :)
Nice melody, I liked this😊
Thanks for listening... it's amazing what a random improvisation can do! :)
Cool intro👍👍👍
I've now added a bit more... coming soon to... well... this channel! Thanks for leaving a comment, much appreciated, Dex :)
Very enjoyable writing session. More and more I see that having inspirational tools makes this so much easier overall. Arkis and Sequis help a lot of your writing along more than I ever realized. I see a lot of your ‘go to’ libraries tend to be quite similar from composition to composition with variety spread thru the supporting libraries. Thanks so much for these videos… great to get your process without pitching some new product. Cheers, Dex!
Thanks Jim, I think I use those two as I am conscious I haven't used them much, but they are great for padding and layering in tracks. I'm sure more will come along, but they are my 'go to' filler instruments for this type of cue at the moment :)
I always enjoy these How To Play videos even though I don't really play. Hey... I see that your subscribers are slowly, but steadily climbing... closing in on 600! Cool. Cheers to a great weekend!
Cheers Jim... yes, the recent Modes video seemed to have got some interest... I never know what will work, but just try and make interesting content. Funnily enough the 'How To Play' episodes keep getting views most consistently. Have a great weekend yourself, Dex :)
thx for the tip!!! Keep up the great work
Thanks for leaving a comment... always appreciated! Dex :)
I do think it is helpful to think of modes in terms of the root note rather than going through the modes diatonically. It is certainly a better way to get a feel for the tonality/quality of each mode.
Absolutely... It is a much better way of thinking for composing and understanding the relationships between the modes. When I was teaching music to 11-16 year olds, those who played an instrument understood this relatively easily, but for the majority the diatonic explanation was simpler. Just getting them to remember 'I Do Pot, Leave Me Alone... Locrian' was actually quite funny too. :)
How cool! the funniest thing is that this is right in front of us... but many just didn't see it. Great video, Dex! Cheers!!
Ha... yes, it's annoyingly simple! :) Cheers Jim!
Quite useful, Dex. I've seen a couple of other ways to view modes, but this one makes a lot of sense with the way they're organized. Cheers! Jim
Cheers Jim, I realised the other video I made was based on somebody else's suggestion on how to remember them, but I think of them like this in day-to-day composing.
Cool track Dex!
Thanks Jeff, always good to hear from you :)
Fun track, Dex. You didn’t say where your audio loops came from… are they Apple Loops or some other source? REALLY FUN CUE! Cheers! Jim
Ooo... good point, I'll add that to the description. They are all loops from Logic, but you could get similar from Splice or other sites. Cheers, Dex :)
Even though I don''t play keyboards worth anything, I still enjoy these "How to Play" videos! Cheers to a good weekend, Dex! Jim
Thanks Jim... I really enjoy playing in a band every so often and hopefully these episodes make the tunes fairly easy to learn too. Cheers, Dex :)
Funny thing… I was just thinking about this a few days ago! Great video. Glad to see you again, Dex! Cheers!
Thanks Jim... It has been good to take a break and have a think about a sensible schedule moving forward. Cheers, Dex :)
@@DexWilliamsMusic Your video today was a bit confusing because it says "Music Monday" so I wondered if I'd missed it or something. Then I saw that had only been up a short time, so breathed a sigh of relief. Cheers, Jim!
Yeah, I felt it fitted in the 'Music Monday' category even though it wasn't technically a Monday. Sorry for the confusion, but hopefully people catching up after next Monday won't feel too cheated!
The D is 100% a Bm in the verse. It's couldn't sound more minor. But I guess if your bass player is playing a B in the then it works out. Thanks for the lesson anyway. Very useful.
Hey... thanks for listening and making the comment as others will find that a useful hint especially if trying to work things out from a guitar chart... I'm showing the chords I use as simply as possible (for me too) as D is a great substitute for Bm7 if you are playing keys :)
@@DexWilliamsMusic do you play that octave D left hand thing with the bass playing B?
I think I've probably overcomplicated things... The only minor chord I play is the Em. This is the way the guitarist/singer arranged our version which works, but admittedly isn't necessarily the most accurate. Sorry for any confusion.
Thanks a lot. Very useful
Glad it was helpful!
Wrong key. Should be in Bm. Original.
That was the original key, not the wrong one. the Eagles actually lowered it to Bb Minor when Don started having trouble hitting the high notes when performing live. The vocalist in my band finds A minor more comfortable.
It's quite interesting to see how one can create a track with no libraries, only making one's own samples and using Logic's internal effects. Great stuff. It's this kind of video... instructional... that is the best! You have a way of presenting subject material that's very instructive and fun... but you also have a channel that doesn't pitch the latest plugins. Thank you, especially for that. Being sold to all of the time is a real pain! Cheers, Dex!!
Couldn't agree more!... Thanks Jim :)
Now this one is a great tutorial on the on board effects in Logic. What a great way to create a track from some simple vocal samples. Cheers!
Thanks Jim, looking back I did use quite a few FX... I really enjoyed the process and by the end of the project I think the snare is the only sound that really stands out as being a vocal sample. All good fun, have a go! Dex :)
Hey Dex… great video! What I really appreciate about this video is that it’s a double tutorial… quick sampler PLUS creating your own voice instruments. Really fun and a great tool for all of us aspiring, and/or hobbyist, composers. Cheers, my friend!
Thanks Jim... I've just published Part 2... and Part 3 is rendering as I type... I thought I would try putting them all out at the same time. There didn't seem like any point in spreading them out over multiple weeks as everyone will be able to see all 3 after the last one is published anyway. Cheers, Dex :)
@@DexWilliamsMusic Thanks Dex! We’re about to leave for the day… I saw the first minute or so of part 2 and will watch both 2 and 3 either later today or tomorrow. I think this is a brilliant exercise for anyone to do. Cheers!
I hope you have a lovely day out.. assuming it's a leisure day! Thanks :)
