County Line and Agoura Hills Drone Footage (07/25/2019)
I was born in Van Nuys in 1957. When I was 2 years old, my father took a job at the Canoga Park location of Rocketdyne. That was where all the engines for the Apollo project, (Moon landings), were built. There were the F-1s as the launching stage. The J2s as second stage and the H-1s as third stage. All but the F-1s were tested at the SSFL. The F-1s had to be tested in the desert, by Edwards AFB. It was said that testing them at the SSFL would knock half the houses in each valley flat. We moved in 1959 to the side of Woodland Hills that was just four miles from the SSFL. For ALL my childhood I was being dosed with radiation. I seem to have come out well. But MANY had cancers and worse. We were four miles from the SSFL. As a side note: on the north of the mountain was a very famous cult leader. That was where Charles Manson and his cult lived at Spahn Ranch. Before he got famous.
@@michaeldavis9774 Thanks for sharing that information Michael. Curious to know if you think your dad had any health issues that were related to working at Rocketdyne? Did he work there for many years? I’m familiar with the area Manson hung out and even visited the old Manson cave which was a very eerie place to say the least…
@@bcdvideo I do not know about any effects. My mom was helped by a nurse for years until she died in 1993 at 72. She had a major stroke combined with a heart attack while in the hospital. My father seemed to be fine, but he han an emergency helecopter ride to Las Vagas, 200 miles away, and died in the ER from a heart attack. I think what you are calling the cave was later in Death Valley. Where he lived at the time of the radiation spill was down the hill from the SSFL. At Spahn Ranch. My father worked at the Canoga Park Rocketdyne site. He was a Leadman on the F=1s. So it is possible he visiter the site at times. I remember he told me he visited there as we drove by it. I have had some issues but they were caused by poor eating. I filled my arteries up with fast food and stuff I ate while driving. Half my life I was a pofessional driver. I have had four heart attacks, one with a quad bypass and two strokes. I am 67. When I was in the Air Force, the dctors said I had an overactive thyroid.
@@michaeldavis9774 well glad to hear your family was not hit with any rare and fast moving cancers like so many unfortunate people have encountered in that area. Yeah, the cave was located on the old Spahn Ranch property. theancientsouthwest.com/2015/05/18/manson-picture-cave/

Thanks Crady! Let’s just go with a very relaxed recreational line of sight flight. Of course after I posted the video my wife pointed out my typo on the date at the end. 🤦🏽♂️

i was just looking at a house 7 miles away from the laboratory, im surprised people arent banned from living their for their safety. houses are still being sold around that area
And people are still dying from rare cancers in that perimeter.
Love this amazing footage! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you very much! 😊

I've been inside that facility off and on for 20 years 1st with a big demolition contractor, hauling demolition away in semi-dump trucks and more recently hauling rock to that facility. Spoke to other drivers, who mentioned they were hauling the contaminated soil under those black tarps to Buttonwillow Ca. ,& somewhere in Idaho, unbelievable!
Thanks for that interesting info!
Pretty cool. Looking forward the live broadcast next year.
@@mmoore500 definitely want to test out that live video feed option one of these days. Maybe you can be my test subject?
That was glorious! Happy Fourth, buddy!
@@cvonp Thank you and happy Fourth of July to you buddy! It’s been a long time!! I finally got a new drone and picked up an Air 3. 😆
@@bcdvideo Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice Looking forward to more footage
@@cvonp really love how simple and quick it is to get this drone ready.
@@bcdvideo Sweet! That's the Mavic 3 Pro, I'm assuming? You know I still haven't flown my Air 2S! Seriously, I just never got around to it. I took it to Croatia and Slovenia in May but Croatia was too windy and Slovenia was near constant rain 🤣🤣🤣😭😂
@@cvonp Oh man! That’s too bad that you didn’t have ideal conditions for flying on your trip. No, I actually went with the Air 3 instead of the Mavic 3 Pro. From all of the research I felt the Air 3 was the best bang for the buck. I love the 24 mm and 70 mm lens on this UAV! I really do wish it had the ability to adjust the aperture but the ND filters seem to work well.
It's not a coincidence that the closer you get to Santa Susanna Field Laboratory that the documented incidence of Cancer increases. Numerous people who once worked there have come down with various forms of Cancer and no doubt this can be due to working on the property.
Hi Brett! Been waiting for more of your drone vids.
Hey Peter! Good hearing from you and hope you’re doing well! Yeah, I’ve been slacking on the drone vids! More to come!
I have relatives who work in hazmat and they laugh at the idea of cleaning this area up, saying that its impossible. Its really that bad! I also lost a brother to cancer. We grew up in Woodland Hills.
So sorry to hear you lost your brother to cancer. To try and comprehend the amount of work it would take to clean this area up is mind numbing.
Nice production, Lived in both Simi Valley and Chatsworth, know this area very well as Black Canyon and Woosley Canyon were my motorcycle hang-outs. Late 1960's was when they really tested those rocket engines, at least once a month and at 5-10 miles away was very loud.
Thanks for watching and sharing your memory of this location! 👍🏼
We lived up in the Santa Susana mountains nearby. My father worked for Rocketdyne from the early 50’s until he was transferred to KSC IN 1965. He passed away from cancer in 1972. From those I’ve talked to, a high percentage of the technicians and engineers that worked there contracted cancer.
So sorry to hear about your father's early passing. This was and still is a contaminated area. Thank you for sharing your personal story.
All should Google "Humboldt Nuclear Accident" by Scott Rainsford. There is reference also to your area. Pro. Daniel Hirsch of UCSC and Committee to Bridge the Gap testified before the U.S. Senate on 18 September 2008? about this criminal activity that no one answered for. There is a great 14pg report available on web.
Capturing the sunset indeed... nice!
Hey there Mr. Gomez!! 👊🏼
In the 50's and 60's we could hear the rocket tests in granada hills in the evening lighting up the sky to our west 'can't can't imagine being mutch closer it must have been frightening ! The people who are responsible for the reactor business at the site were the US department of energy and not some corporations but the company's that worked on rocket tech are responsible for the chemical mess verry sad situation !
I’m a brain cancer survivor and lived in that area for 10 years. I believe that rocketdyne contributed to the development of the brain tumor. Some people has told me that isn’t the case and that the hill is monitored and the levels of radiation are “safe.”
So sorry to hear about your battle with cancer. Too many people have been diagnosed with very rare cancers surrounding this facility to be ignored. It’s very difficult to believe that these cases are not affiliated with SSFL.
@@bcdvideo Thank you. I’m not living around there anymore. A few days ago, my daughter’s teacher told the class that they needed to have more green in the room for mental health awareness month. My daughter told her it was also brain cancer awareness month, so they need grey too. Her teacher made a dismissive comment about how it was so rare that it didn’t need to be recognized or something along those lines. My daughter told her that her mom had it. The teacher was silent and put up a grey ribbon on the slide show. I thought that people like her are the reason we need brain cancer awareness. My daughter is only 11, so I was proud of her for speaking up.
She is awesome! Bless you both. Amen.
@@GailGreen-tq8jd Thank you. God bless you too.
We grew up in Simi Valley, and lived off Stearns for a long time. I had been on the 118 many times, and always wondered why everything else had been built up, but why this area was basically "untouched." We had no idea, I hadn't even heard of Rocketdyne until several years ago. It's crazy they would do all of their testing, including nuclear reactor testing, so close to the LA basin. I think, realistically, the best thing we can do now is try to advocate for it getting properly cleaned up the best way possible, but that may not happen at all. At least letting people know what they're living near (or on) is a big step.
These places have asbestos in them!
Most definitely! Gotta mask up...
I lived in Reseda in the 50s when this happened. Our next do neighbor Gene Shanks was an employee. He became super contaminated and still went home to his family. I saw his wife the next day run out of their house in a panic throwing up and trying to eat an apple. Gene told my father from a distance what happened. We moved to the San Gabriel Valley in just a few days. As for the tarp covering the ground. I will guess it's to stop rain water leeching down through the soil and getting into the ground water.
Thanks for your sharing your memory of what you saw back in the 1950s in Reseda. Crazy times! I think you’re spot on about the tarps.
Your lucky . I tried flying my drone in same area and got an earful from the ranger who lives up there. He wasn’t very nice.
Oh wow! Do they have posted signs that say no drone flying? The airspace is not restricted by the FAA but if they have signs posted now maybe that’s the “gotcha”. You need a find a place where you’re not on their property and fly like an eagle. 🇺🇸
This is why they concreted the creek which ultimately goes into the la river /gutter
Which creek
All or the creek bottoms in Bell canyon were concreted in the mid sixties@@Watsonwes
I lived on Khuner next to the Knolls elementary school . i grew up there from 1984 - 1994 . Played little league in the santa Susanna mountains. We had a dry creek bed that ran along the Knolls elementary school were we caught baby squirrels 🐿️ by hand !? We thought it was SO weird that the baby squirrels just allowed us to pick them up . We also saw a rocket 🚀 fly over head in like 1991 😳
so before you give false info make sure your sources are credible
All my sources are very credible and from people that worked on this facility when it was operational. Do your own research before making such a vague statement.
your information is wrong, I currently work at the facility, I can assure you there is no radio activating, there used to be pits that contained the waste from the rocket test which was radioactive but it is buried to far down to cause any harmful effects to anyone, and that pons that used to be a dump for waste, is actually a water treatment center, where we clean rain water and put it there for the animals to drink
You obviously haven’t done your research and the fact that you say you work on the property yet you are this oblivious to what actually occurred at SSFL back in the day is quite alarming. I’m guessing you work for Southern California Edison? Lastly, your grammar and spelling is quite horrendous and you come across as someone who isn’t very well educated so it’s extremely difficult for me to believe you know what you’re even talking about… 🤷🏽♂️
Wow! This is a quality video. Very Well Done Brett!!! I wonder if Santa Susana State Park is contaminated.. the water that flows through it.
Thank you for watching and there is still a plethora of cleaning up to do.
They burned it to spread out concentration. Dilution is not the solution to pollution.
As a boy from 1957 till 1970 we lived near Haskell Ave. - Rinaldi Street. We saw and heard the light and rumble from Rocketdyne.
I was born in 1957 in Van Nuys. At 2 we moved to Woodland Hills.
Sent to service a blueprint machine there in the 70s.
Beautiful footage, Brett. Pretty history of the place as well. 👍
Thanks buddy! There’s definitely a plethora of cool history around here. Always good to hear from you and hope you’re doing well!! 👊🏼
@@bcdvideo No doubt! One of these I hope to come out and see for myself 👊
Great video. I seriously doubt it can ever be returned to its natural condition, very sad to say. Such a unique and beautiful area.
Anyone else here after watching In The Dark of the Valley?
Very scary stuff. Never thought I’d see this stuff in modern day America
My family lived in Simi Valley in the 60's. I have two bothers with cancer, one multiple myeloma the other leukemia. Simi seemed like such a paradise. Wonder what they did with the Kotex and Bactine they used to mop up the meltdown mess? Probably went to the burn pits as well.
So sorry to hear about your family's battle with cancer in Simi Valley. We will probably never know if these contaminants were properly handled or if they ended up at the local dump. I've read that hazardous waste from this site has made it to the local dump sites. Very scary stuff...
Boomer mentality apparent here. No forethought or consideration for the long term effects to surroundings and environment. When u design something u plan for it to fail safe and not seep into other parts...keep in contained.
I think you are confused. The "Greatest Generation" did this. My father began working at Rocketdyne in July 1959, just after the accident, and we moved into one of the first houses built on Gertrude Street, right below the hill. My brother was born with many birth defects and my sister with a huge tumor on her spine at only 4 lb. My parents and I never developed any issues and I'm now 70. This is horrifying and so sad. So, Gen X'er or whatever you are, go take on the government and see how far you get.
Boomers would have been children at the time.
Happy New Year! Fun video, Brett. Beautiful footage as always 👍
Thanks Crady! Happy New Year to you too! Always great to hear from you!! 👊🏼
Lol, snow storm? Try a NY snowstorm, which is itself nothing compared to others
New York snowstorm? LOL! That's nothing!! Getting pummeled by blizzard in the Sierra's puts any NY storm to shame...
I currently live in bell canyon probrably about 1- 2 miles from the old rocketdyne facility I have lived here for around 8 years. Is there anything I should be worried about with my health?
I had many friends that lived in Bell Canyon back when the SSFL was fully operational and they are all still fine. That said, I would be leery of eating anything grown in the ground there. I knew a couple guys that would hike to the top of a hill and watch the rockets being tested. Unfortunately they didn’t have a clue about what they were breathing back then. This kind of scenario kind of sheds light on how some people get lung cancer and never smoked a single cigarette…
@@bcdvideo thank you!
I have family in Bell Canyon and I’m telling them to move away from there. The chemicals are deep in the groundwater. Plus the fire made it worse by carrying radioactive materials.
To have to read the captions is an unfortunate distraction. Great video, otherwise.
Thanks for watching. Unfortunately I didn’t like the sound of my voice over so I went with text.
@@bcdvideo Roger that. I hate the sound of my voice on a recording.
Lived in Granada hills graduating from that High school in 1961.What information that.Left there in 1968.Moved there about 1954.
I grew up 8 miles from SSFL in Woodland Hills. I remember hearing the rocket tests all the time growing up. In the late 90s I went on a school field trip there. Insane that they would allow school children to visit. I just saw a commercial for a documentary about what happened at SSFL that's going to air on MSNBC this Sunday, 11/14, and looking up the trailer for that led me to your video. Nice work with the drone footage and the old photos and videos you gathered. ua-cam.com/video/puxOB5BHbKE/v-deo.html
Thanks for checking out my video. It’s truly amazing what went on up at that facility. I’m definitely going to be watching that documentary on the 14th. The guys that put that documentary film together actually used some of my aerial video footage.
Thank You!
I just went there for a quick hike (30 minutes ) I climbed some rocks, etc. should I be fine? I WONT be returning there.
Hari Krsna and you wonder where cancer comes from. Kill the sheeple
This.
Brett, I'm with you on restoring the natural beauty of this land, but some of the toxic material that is contaminating this area has a half life of 10,000 years before it will be safe again. And yet housing is encroaching closer and closer to cancer and death.👍✌
The cleanup should be done as well as it can be done in modern times. If the levels of contamination are too severe after the cleanup has been completed the areas should be cordoned off….
@@bcdvideo Brett, I'll leave you with this last comment: There's always hope.👍✌
