Hey LTP! I was a bit nervous about this video because it’s more critical than most of my videos, so I appreciate the kind words. I do think FF16 is a great game that’s worth checking out, but there are a number of aspects that don’t totally work for me and they’re all compounded by this DLC. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts when you get a chance to play it. The Buster Sword is a bonus downloadable item that they added to the game some time after launch. It doesn’t have any story significance but it’s a cool addition regardless!

That makes sense, but then what about Red XIII? Why he is able to sense Aerith's presence? I guess they've had a heightened connection since they first met in Remake so that could explain it.

That’s a good point. Aerith in particular feels like more of a plot device than a living, breathing character. That’s a shame because I really love the way they characterized her in Remake. Hopefully the final game is able to find the right balance between resolving all the crazy plot stuff while also maintaining believable human characters that we can connect with on an emotional level. I’m so interested to see how they ultimately decide to resolve this story.

They really went all out on this game. It’s hard to see how they can top it in Part 3, but I’m excited to find out!

That’s awesome! What was it about Rebirth that you like so much more than Remake? I agree about Zack. I don’t know what exactly his role will be in the final game, but he’s most likely going to play a major part.

Hey LTP, it’s always great to hear from you! Those are totally fair criticisms. I felt like both the Dyne scene and the Seto scene were undercut by all the crazy things that happen immediately after (the Palmer fight and chase scene just after Dyne, and going to the world of the Gi after the Seto scene), so neither of those moments hit as hard as I hoped they would. I agree that the confusing nature of the ending is meant to help give the player a sense of Cloud’s fragmented perception of reality. I’ve come to really like the ending after watching it a few times now, but I can understand how it might be unsatisfying for some people. Hopefully some of the confusion will give way to clarity by the end of the final game, but somehow I think that game is going to have a weird, crazy ending too. @@mistandmako You're welcome, and the game has a lot of fun things to offer. I love the trademark humor bring brought back in this one with all the funny moments, and the graphics were very appealing as well as the music. It had a linear feeling, but also with some open world elements. When I think about my gripes, I also think about the overall pros n cons. I may come off as negative, but I did have a great time, just certain things felt underwhelming from the purist standpoint, as the original was known to be super dramatic, and went over the edge in boldness. A lot of things were better and expansive in the Rebirth, but I seriously miss my rollercoaster mini-game. I had high expectations for that. I still can't rule it out though, as I'm sure the next installment is going to be the biggest, with grand finale levels of content and things to do. When I compare the Remake and the Rebirth, they went above with this one, and added so many more elements. I personally enjoyed the crafting, and rock climbing additions. I also would like to keep in mind that certain things will expand and evolve, so I'm keeping a positive outlook going forward to cap it all off. As of now, the original is still my favorite game of all time, but they still have a chance to switch my personal placing with the next one. I just hope they don't continue to soften the original plot, but time will tell. I'm going to continue to try and get the full completion done now, as I kinda sped through the first playthrough with some family members who are also fans of the original.

​@@LoneTreePeak As much as I love Remake and Rebirth, the original is still my favorite too. The new games are very much their own thing with their own style, so they'll never be a replacement for the original, but they serve as a complementary experience for people like me who love that world, story, and characters and want to experience a different version of them. Some aspects are stronger than the original and other aspects are weaker, but overall I think these are very worthwhile experiences. I'd totally forgotten about the roller coaster mini game until you brought it up, but now that you mention it I'm surprised they didn't do anything with it. How can you have an amusement park without a roller coaster? lol

I think it’s always going to be compared to Persona, at least by some people. It’s an easy comparison to make given the dev team and some of the gameplay similarities. I don’t think there’s necessarily anything wrong with making comparisons as long as we also recognize the unique characteristics of each game. So hopefully once Metaphor comes out people will be able to appreciate what makes it special and different rather than just boiling it down to Persona comparisons.

@@mistandmako The usual comparisons that are made aren't a problem to me either, everyone is entitled to it anyway, I just hope that people don't turn it into something toxic. (wouldn't be the first time, unfortunately) But this is exactly what I have been thinking, appreciating it for what it is, is very important! I am also very biased, since this my most anticipated game like.. ever.. Great video btw!

@@umbral9911 Thank you! Yeah unfortunately there's always someone who takes their criticism or comparisons too far and turn things toxic. That sucks, but I try to ignore that kind of conversation and just enjoy the things that I enjoy. I love Persona but I'm also super excited to see that team branching out and trying something new, so hopefully Metaphor ends up being something really excellent that can stand on its own.

@@mistandmakoI do like that attitude and I agree! The game looks like something that I always wanted ever since 2006/07, when I first played SMT3. Back then I was wondering if there was a game that was like Final Fantasy 9 and SMT (basically a high fantasy SMT kinda) so this is like a dream come true for me.

That makes complete sense. Games are super expensive so you want to make sure you get your money's worth. Something tells me Metaphor's going to be worth the money (both in terms of quality and length)!

@@mistandmako I mean I didn't get my money on anything else besides this (and P3R the answer) this year, maybe P3R hit me so hard that I'm addicted once again to Persona-like games. But this game looks like something I want to spend my limited money on, maybe Elden ring dlc if it comes out soon but for now, this is what it is.

That’s an interesting perspective that I hadn’t considered. Older societies would look at all the progress we’ve made and be amazed by it. At the same time, for all the progress we’ve made things like war, racism, poverty etc are still ubiquitous in our modern society. If the story is going to be effective, I think Metaphor has to acknowledge that there’s no such thing as a perfect utopia and that there will always be work to be done in order to make the world a better place for everyone.

That's a good way to put it. The most important thing is that the game takes the time it needs to fully develop its ideas.

Something tells me there's going to be a lot of content about it when the game releases. If it's as good as I think it's going to be, a lot of people are gonna be talking about it.

Just finished it a little while ago! I'm not sure yet if I'm going to make a video about it or not, but I loved it. All the additions to the combat are incredible.

For sure! If they can successfully carry over those Persona elements into a new game with an interesting world and innovative combat, I think it could end up being really special. Obviously that’s a lot of ifs, but like you say the potential is there.

I love Yuffie and always used to put her in my party as a kid, so please don't think I'm trashing her! She always had a great story and a fun personality, but I think she was a bit one-dimensional in the original. She was the loudmouth brat who wanted to steal all the materia, but there wasn't much emotional depth beyond that. Remake fleshes her out really beautifully and turns her into a much richer character.

Hey, thanks for taking the time to comment on my video! Barret’s question makes perfect sense to me. We fought Sephiroth at the end of Remake, but we didn’t learn a lot about him during that confrontation. Barret knows he’s a bad dude, but he doesn’t know why. What is the motivation behind Sephiroth’s actions? Why is this guy who's regarded as a legendary hero trying to destroy the planet? That’s why the team stops down in Kalm and listens to Cloud’s story - so he can explain his history with Sephiroth and tell us all why he’s bad news. Your other point is fair. We'll have to wait and see if anyone brings up that statement from Hojo at any point in Rebirth. That said, we know Tifa sees some of the inconsistencies in Cloud’s account. She doesn’t bring it up either because she doesn’t want to call Cloud out in front of everyone or because she’s doubting her own account of events. The original game digs deeper into this inconsistency as the story goes on and based on what we’ve seen in trailers it looks like Rebirth is going to go even further to highlight the tension between Cloud’s version of the story and Tifa’s experience in Nibelheim.

@@mistandmako In original game sure. But in Rebirth? Taking into consideration the second point why would they believe Cloud? They know that he is not a SOLDIER, so he is either lying OR he is not right in the head therefor unreliable source of information therefor IMO question doesn't make sense. And there still is a fact of Barret being killed by Sephiroth. I don't know about you but if some dude randomly stabbed me, for me it would be enough reason to hate his guts. I hope it gets better but my expectations are ultra low.

@@uHasioorr Why wouldn’t they believe Cloud? He’s their friend who they trust and care about, of course they’re going to take his word over that of Hojo the sadistic mad scientist. On top of that, his account of what happened in Nibelheim is so accurate and detailed that there's no way it could be a lie. Tifa has firsthand experience of what happened in Nibelheim and his story is an accurate depiction of what she lived through (except for the fact that, as far as she knows, Cloud himself wasn’t actually there). In any case, Tifa doesn’t just blindly accept Cloud’s story either. In the Summer Games Fest trailer, there’s a clip of her talking to Aerith about how Cloud wasn’t in Nibelheim five years ago. She doesn’t aggressively accuse Cloud of lying because that’s not how you talk to someone you care about, but she definitely does question him. As for Barret, if some dude randomly stabbed me I’d be confused and want to know more about the guy and why he’d do such a thing. When Barret asks Cloud for a reason to hate Sephiroth, what he’s really asking is what prompted this hero to become a villain. Obviously Barrret doesn’t like the guy who tried to kill him, but he wants to know the specifics - why did he try to kill me and why is he trying to destroy the planet? Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

@@mistandmako I already said why and I wouldn't say that they are friends. Maybe Cloud with Tifa, Cloud with Aerith, Tifa with Barret, but that's about it. This is not the team from end of the og game. They will become friends... I hope... but not yet. I would love to see Tifa and Aerith talking about this in tomorrow's updated demo. Hojo isn't just a sadistic mad scientist. He is a sadistic mad scientist that was spilling beans and plot ghosts had to stop him because he was about to reveal fate changing knowledge. And they should know it because they know what plot ghosts are. That gives him credibility beyond friendship.

@@uHasioorr I strongly disagree that they’re not friends. Red XIII maybe not because he only joins the crew at the end of Remake, but the other four clearly all care very deeply for each other. Cloud and Barret’s relationship grows significantly throughout the game; they hate each other at first, but by the end they trust in each other, confide in each other, and rely on each other. They’re friends. I really like what they’re doing with the story and these character interactions ring true to me. You feel differently and that’s totally fine. We can respectfully disagree and move on, because I don’t think either of us are going to change our feelings on any of this stuff (at least not until the game comes out and we have something more concrete to discuss).

Totally fair points. For me, the linearity in FFX works better than in XIII because there is better variety. FFX has towns to explore, NPCs to interact with on the road, minigames like blitzball, and the temples each have unique puzzles, so even though the levels themselves are very linear it doesn't feel like you're just doing the same thing over and over. I agree that XV goes too far the other way; big open spaces but nothing particularly interesting to do. It feels like Rebirth is going to have the best of both worlds, but we'll have to wait and see how it all comes together in the final product. Fingers crossed they get the balance just right!

To be fair, Star Ocean and the Tales series ALSO didn’t create ABT combat. 🙄🤦🏻

A lot of other games have played with similar ideas, but Remake’s combat is my favorite version of a hybrid tactical action system. The Ghost of Tsushima comparison is surprising to me. I guess the stagger mechanics are similar, but other than that I think they’re pretty different.

Didn't Ghost of Tsushima come out a few months _after_ Remake?

@@jamesgravil9162 yeah they released a couple months apart. Remake was April 2020 and Ghost was July.

Lol I like those hand puzzles! I know a lot of people don’t like it, but I definitely think it has value. Remake’s level design is very linear so having a unique puzzle mechanic that isn’t re-used ever again makes that particular level feel distinct from everywhere else in the game. On top of that, it provides a break from battling so you don’t feel like you’re just fighting battles all the time. I also appreciate it because it’s a nod to the original which has a similar crane in the same area, although you can’t interact with it at all.
