DBX 166XL vs 266XL
I'm planning on doing a bunch of compressor test videos in the near future, and since the DBX 166XL and the 266XL are like the SM57 of the Analog Hardware Compressor world, I wanted to test these out against each other to see witch one is the better one. Just to know which is the one I should compare all the other comps against in the future.
I need a new camera with an option to turn off autofocus :D So basically fuck this Nokia Phone I have :D

BSS DPR944 versus DBX 266XL - Compressor shootout

Today I wanted to try this new compressor of mine, the BSS DPR944, "The Opal Compressor" and decided to compare it against the workhorse DBX 266XL. Tried it on Kick Drum, Snare, Overheads, Bass, Vocals and Masterbuss My number 1 problem with this is that it doesn't have attack and release knobs on the compressor! Just why?! The Slow/Fast release button is not enough! But yes, it makes up that f...

I don't own the track and nor the rights for it. All of that is preserved by the band and the record label This has been on my to-do list for about a half a year, and now finally decided to do it. But rather than cover it on guitar like many other has done already, I went with the bass. Reason being, I just randomly tested how the Eyemaster sounds on Bass and oh boi it sounded nasty, so had to ...

Mic VS. Mic - Audio-Technica AT2020 vs. Superlux E205
Cool! Timestamps.
My favorite is the Senheiser and Shure 91.
I run the ART tube preamp in front of the ART compressor and it sounds excellent. You always preamp before a compressor so that’s not really news
Except of course if you are running line-signal level, like in most cases? Inserts of analog consoles, interface outputs and all of this stuff puts out line-levels. You only need preamp once, and that is to boost the mic-level signal when u use the mic to record the audio. After that the signal is and stays on line-level (if u don't turn it down by -30dbs of course), so in this video there is no need for preamp anywhere
This is so amazing cover!
Need more material ising sub octave bass. I really want do a project with at least a 7 string guitar in stabdard B1 E2 A1 D2 G2 B3 E4 tuning 9 string tuned down 2 semi tones B0 E1 A1 D2 G2 B2 E3 5 string quake bass (any E0 or F#0 that has one deeper strung tubed by 4ths) tuned B-1 E0 A0 D1 G1...optonal C2/B1 string if 6 string quake Bass but rarely see 5 let alone 6
Of course I have MANY variations on the idea. Either A match the bass to 8/9/ 10 string tuned down 2 semi tones to 8.E1/9.B0/10.E0 which works cause even sane notes in same octave bass SOUNDS DIFFERENT even if played a guitar..but there are A LOT of options besides harmonizing with the guitar(s) B. Much cooler to go octave LOWER most of time. 6 string guitar E2 with 4 string bass E1 7 string guitar B1 with 5 string bass B0 8 string guitar F#1 with 6 string (2 lower strings) or baritone bass like vampire dark lord 4 string lowest F#0. But with 8 string at F#1 regardless of 4 or 10 strings the bass should have a F#0 3. 9 strings C#1 with 7 string bass(3 low string added C#0. Or could tune the 9 string down 2 semi tones to B0 (which matches 7 string on SAME octave) (but also B0 is one octave ABOVE B-1 which is "standard" tuning (factory spec tuning is probably more accurate term cause not much standard in such a niche beautiful instrument)for 5 string sub octave bass [B-1 E0 A0 D1 G1] though most I see are just 4 string only going up to E0 4. 10 string G#0 can only have octave DOWN bass with CRAZY deep tuning. Though there is a 5 string "sub sub bass" (that's what kalium LABELS the string set) G#-1 C#0 F#0 B0 E1...kind of funny how the lowest string on a standard bass is the HIGHEST string on this monstrosity 😊)... .to match the 10 string G#0 even octave and note to a 6 string (low) or dark lord, etc you just need to tune it down 2 semi tones to match the F#0 string
Is that bass tuned to C#0 F#0 B0 E1 A1?
Yup!
Amazing bro
tuning ?
People shit on Behringer, but their stuff is incredible for the money. These compressors can be found on the used market for 50ish euros, so, even if it breaks, you can just go and buy another one. DBX was the second best.
And the mere fact Behringer makes instruments and musical tools available for people with small pockets, should be reason to applaude them.
"Salakuvaus meiningit" -Tuomas Laajoki 2024
The V7 X though
I have both mics. I prefer the 409 to the 906 in this case, although the 906 does have onboard EQ that might cut out nasty bass and enhance top end. As usual, the SM57 holds its own.
Very nice.
Great Sound Man!!
if you turn down the gain from the pedal, and uses at the same time the tho boosts, sounds greate.
Gremio série B
Great Comp-arison, no pun intended 🙂
Esse mic da Superlux é para bumbo e instrumentos mais graves... fica show para captar ampli de baixo, tambores, surdos, etc. This Superlux mic is for bass drums and lower instruments... it's great for capturing bass amps, drums, floor toms, etc.
I am not a fan of Shure, but for the drums the SM57 had a wider range while the Superlux projected the annoying frequency much louder (lack of other frequencies that would compensate). For the hi gain guitar the Superlux is way to hifi (lots of low end plus some high end) while the SM57 gives the midfrequencies that are neccesary for guitar. I do think the SM57 also gives too much muddy low for guitar and prefer the Sennheiser evolution series.
Excelente comparación; ganó Behringer y DBX o viceversa
_// . Thanks for sharing the video! Let me tell you something important: God loves you! God loves us ! He is no respecter of persons! because God wants us all to be saved! and let's go to the knowledge of the “Truth” God wants to save us from eternal damnation, which we all deserve because of sin, who entered the world through Adam, and death entered through sin, and thus death passed to all human beings, Therefore, we are all “Sinners” But God's Love was so great for us, that he sent his only Son (Jesus Christ), gave him to this world, to die and rise for all of us! No Respect of Persons! so that everyone who believes in Jesus Christ does not go to eternal punishment, but rather has “Eternal Life!” “ Jesus Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures; and he was buried, and rose again on the third day, according to the Scriptures Jesus Christ came to call sinners to “Repentance! “ and, he who believes in Him, has “Eternal Life! “But whoever refuses to believe in Jesus Christ, the wrath of God remains on him. Then, as through Adam's transgression, condemnation came to all human beings, in the same way, through the justice of Jesus Christ, justification of life came to all human beings! All of us who believe in The Only Savior of the world! The Only Mediator between God and us! The Lord Jesus Christ! The son of God! All of us who trust in Him; we have “Eternal Life! “ And we must know that there is salvation in no one else; because there is no other name under heaven, given to human beings, in which we can be saved. Only by Believing/Trusting in “Jesus Christ” can we be Saved! But Jesus Christ also said: Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Therefore, we must be doers of the Word of God! and not only listeners and/or readers, deceiving ourselves. So let's read the Word of God! There is His Will! what God wants us to do! Let us read mainly the Gospels; Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and let us pray to God, our Heavenly Father, all the days of the life that He gave us! God loves you! God loves us! To Him alone be the Glory Forever! Amen! I know you posted this 8 years ago but i recommend watching Steffans playthrough.
Bad sound demo, but awesome funktion demo. Thank you...
Nice cover! Keep it up!
I got a non working one 2-3yrs ago. For something ridiculous, like $20. Got it all fixed up and i really like it. Never saw a pedal with so much on board. According to Mesa Boogie, they stopped making them because of high expense. But parts are still abundant.
in my opinion both sound pretty bad on everything haha- would love context in a mix though that may help
This video is an awesome resource! Great work!
The akg seems to have some sort of "radio effect"... Is it because it's flatter?
great vid! would've loved to see them on the reso too
Jumalauta😮
I liked the akg better

D6 paras mikki joka tomiin ja äänilähteeseen
425 sound best for me, Behringer and DBX sound good to, the Art was a bit flat and did not like the Alesis sound at all
-what tone do you want? -...machinery
Great Video and good tests... At first: I have the Sennheiser e901, the Sennheiser e902, the SHURE Beta91A and I often use the SHURE Beta52 (when I'm working for different Bands or Companys). I'm a huge Sennheiser Fanboy BUT... normally the SHURE Beta91A is the easy one and the Sennheiser e901 is the "picky" one. But in this Test the Beta91is absolutely not the winner, the Beta52 is really muddy and I'm really surprised by the e602 (normally for me it's tooooo "boomy").
This was really usefull, thanks a lot. I have the scl2 and the dbx, and i´m also using an Altair compressor (not really sure about the model), and they work excellent :D
Hell yeah dude
I'm researching tom mics at the moment, and came across this video, thank you, a really well thought out demo of the mics. Great job. Cheers.
Sounds like it would sound great double-tracking the guitars with both mics, seem like they would compliment each other well.
I HATE the way the ART sounds compared to everything else. lol. I haven’t thought about why. I like the sound characteristic of the 3630 which I think would make for a great production tool. The Beringer surprised me the most.
Shure was pretty weak sounding tbh
100% Agree. It is such a shame that everybody uses this mic just because it is "the standard" even tho it is literally the worst mic for the kick
I almost bought one! So glad I didn’t. I bought a vkick and it’s amazing
@@JuveriSetilamajor buyers remorse on my end
Well, that was muddy. Everything blended into everything else. I don’t even think mixing could save this.
Yes :D
incredibly usefull video!!
Very interesting. Thanks for all the work !
Are you still in possession of this Quake Bass????? I'd love to hear you do more covers with it!!!!!
Yup I still do have it. I'll see what I can do for you🤘😉
@@JuveriSetila thank you so much!!!!!
This is absolutely amazing, the sound tickles my brain with headphones on haha, great work!!!!! I have a 34" 4 string bass in D0 A0 D1 G1 with custom Newtone strings, gauges 0.200 0.130 0.094 and 0.067
GREAT, simple to the-point comparison, THANK YOU! I find that two mics on the kick (for recording) is the ultimate solution if you have the channels. I use a 57 inside and a e602 outside, but am considering a D6 for the inside. Any thoughts about this configuration? I love how punchy the D6 is, but wondering if the low-end might be overkill?
U can always deal with too much low end with just a simple Low Shelf. I have never compared the D6 to 57 directly, but I would assume the 57 has more highs, so if that is what you are after with that inside mic, then I would guess that the 57 is just fine
Thanks for the comparison! Question. I looking for these cheap 2 channel compressors for karaoke, music played from YT and just me on mic. For 2 channel compressors, can I (would make sense) to use 1 channel for compression of mic alone; then use the 2nd channel for bus compression?
It could work, but driving the 2 signals (Left&Right) coming from youtube into 1 compressor channel would sum them into mono, so you would lose the stereo-ability. So if you have a nice stereo setup going on with 2 seperate speakers and wanna preserve all of that stereo-goodness, then I would not recomend that. In karaoke situations with studio-grade backing tracks that are compressed already, I'm not sure if you need any buss compression at all. Just compress the vocal mic and mix it in with the YT sound and it should sound good. And then you would have the 2nd channel ready for any friends when u wanna have a karaoke party :)
@@JuveriSetila Thanks for the suggestion! Yeah, the karaoke plays from YT to mixer to powered speakers. I'll probably just compress the 2 mic channels. Maybe add BBE sonic maximizer to bring vocals together with audio.
