In the last couple of UA-cam Shorts, I've been sharing some pretty ways of endings songs and playing turnarounds. Now we're doing a deep dive into Barry Harris's beatufiful technique "Borrowing from the Neighbors", which gives endless coloristic possibilities, even when only applying it to the Major 6 Diminished Scale of Chords, as is done here.
Check out Foundations 1 and 2 for a thorough textbook exploring these concepts in much more detail.
There is so much going on right now, and there are lots of options for you to learn more. I now develop web apps that I post on my Patreon, I am continuing to write the Foundations textbooks and create weekly content for the Labyrinth course on my patreon, and we are having a great time in Zoom classes each Sunday. You should join us:)

Nice ! Dm7 - G7b9 - Gm7 - C7b9 - Cm7 - F7alt - - - BbM7(9)
Really beautiful. Started too late but I’m definitely going to stay on this path and try to get as far as I can
I am SURE you get tired of hearing people tell you that your are a Genius! I have "dabbled" in the Barry Harris workshops since VHS! LOL Mostly for the harmony (as opposed to all the half-step rules) I was thrilled when Roni Ben-hur came out with his book but still never got to learn to apply the harmony. Just this one demo alone and your Episode 1: Relative Motion in the Ebmajor 6 Diminished Scale of Chords has blown my mind with opportunity to learn. You have SO much stuff though, I don't know where to begin for the Complete beginning step by step instruction to learn to master your Barry Harris approach. Any suggestions or email for further advice?
This channel has become an enormous achievement. It’s feels like you can keep going forever, finding beautiful little miracles along the way. Thanks dude 🙏🏼
Thanks so much! I’m really happy with how this project continues to grow, and how endless the path is:) super fun stuff
Very nice!
This video is my favorite. A quintessencial motherload of harmonic knowledge....no breaks for you Thomas!
🙏 Thanks! It’s really cool to hear about people likening these original ones where this project started:)
The diagrams that come up on screen look like constellations lol
There's a mistake in that chromatic circle you use to show the chords' notes. Whenever you play an Abmin6 chord, the square says the notes are Ab (right), F (right), C (wrong) and D (wrong). The C and D should be B and Eb. Also, when you say "there it is in drop-2", it's not a drop-2, it's a drop-1 (F is in the bass). As if if this video wasn't already confusing enough...
Good catch! I accidentally made it F minor 6(family to Ab minor 6) when making that graphic
Thank you so Much for this , So Very Helpful!!
At level 2 ii v I, I was so confused how it works then I figured out ii comes from C major diminished 6 chords V comes from Eb Minor diminished 6 chords I comes from Dmaj diminished 6 chords instead of Gmaj diminished 6 chords and that works because Dmaj6 is G9. oh my Gosh my brain almost melted ! Thank you
You are one of the finest improvisers I've come across on UA-cam and in general. Thankyou for sharing your knowledge with the world!
Thank you:) I’m keeping really busy with this stuff and all the kind comments mean a lot to me. Lots in store:)
@@TheLabyrinthofLimitations Cheers 🥂
Good players are terrible teachers I can play the harmonic root minus the 3rd. Or you can substitute the triad form for the melodic minor. Or if I follow the octave and invert it. It will have a darker tone. Etc etc etc. blah blah blah. Been playing guitar since I was 3 years old. I'm now 50. A friend of mine who was a professional jazz guitarist told me when I was 20. And I quote " wtf are you doing ". I was like excuse me ? He went in to say. Technically you're playing some amazing chords and lead guitar. But you're not making music. He went on to say. Music has to sound good to the listener. They need to hear the melody of the song you're playing. Play the melody and the rest will follow. He said remember. Sometimes less is more. Best guitar advice I have gotten Ever
This really reminds me of some of the sounds from Luiz Bonfá
Fantastic teaching! 🙌👏🏽🙏
What are you playing? And I couldn't imagine how long it takes to edit this!!!
I feel one could make a 2 hour video explaining this 1 minute short.
you lay off the information quite well but it goes so damn fast, like i have to replay every video atleast 50 times to understand
This video is full of mistakes. Read my comment, I've pointed them out. He doesn't "lay the information quite well".
love your tutorials ;-)
Im doing some practice with this on the standard My Romance.
I think you should consider acting roles now. You have that look and presence. Nice stuff btw.
Get an agent, start off with commercials that could even feature a little playing. Seriously.
Excellent. Amazing voice also, unique style👍🏽
WHAT IS THAT GUITAR?
that's a moov guitar i believe, they look like very fine instruments. if i could just find those few extra thousands of dollars i left somewhere...
@@ShanevsDCsniperr Oh wow 😮. Seriously, I don’t know why I keep losing my five thousand dollars either 🤦♂️🤷♂️
This is great stuff. It sounds great resolving to C. I don’t get the theory of why it works as a V if that makes sense.
Like some of those moves pull my ear to F# M.
great question yes i love that guitar! 😍 i bet Holdsworth would have loved one too 🥲
All of this sounds complicated but if you understand it's really not it's so logical and mathematic in a way. I love learning about this stuff. Makes my brain all nice and fuzzy. I get so excited learning about all this stuff
You guys are all talking like you know what key this is in. He starts showing the Fmaj6 then later says the ii7 of Bb, Eb = C minor 7 chord. Then the ending song starts in F6 so im thinking its in F major. Or maybe its in Bb and he just starts on the V chord idk... So is this whole thing in Bb major or is he modulating and changing the key to fit this wildly advanced theory?
“We’re just going to paint a happy little 6 chord…riiiight here.”
This is the most didactic music channel I have found around effortless solo jazz guitar playing. Thank you so much for this!!
very cool idea.
How do you tune
his guitar is broken..
Bro, your'e a genius
what guitar is that? I want one.
Can someone explain to me what that diagram graph thingy was??
Sounds a lot like classic boleros, what gives it that distinctive sound?
It’s that extra scale note that gives it the flavor 😋

F major 6 diminished, drop 2s on top four strings. ❤
That’s called a fully diminished cord
That progression is in Dear Old Stockholm and in There Will Never Be Another You! Probably many other standards. It’s really beautiful! I use it in my playing. I just love it.
