My deepest condolences to Alyssa's family, friends and the cycling community. I have cycled that exact stretch of 100 thousands of times since 1981. The last time was on a Friday in July this year. I could not believe how much worse it had gotten! Average speed of cars, total disregard for the three foot law, etc. And, you see that rumble strip? By the time a vehicle's tire hits it, that vehicle is already intruding on the shoulder!!! TDOT heard all about those rumble strips umpteen years ago, but never did anything to correct their improper installation. There are four Share the Road signs from the 70/100 split to where the crash occurred - useless w/out strict and consistent enforcement of the law. Thank you for shooting this video. I promise those vehicles were slowing way, way down, probably b/c you were filming. I walked roses down to the crash site on Saturday, and I estimated average speed was 60 mph, even while I was walking on the shoulder, roses in one hand and giving a slow down sign and flashing 45 with the other (45 mph is the speed limit). Most people did not even cover their brake. 😢 We need massive education about drivers' responsibilities toward cyclists, intensive and consistent enforcement (perhaps with the use of cameras that would automatically issue tickets for violations) on poles above those Share the Road signs, reinstallation of a proper and actual bike lane on that stretch between the split all the way to the intersection with Hwy 96 (with regular maintenance of the stretches of bike lanes that already exist)! That's just for starters...may all you who loved Alyssa find comfort as you grieve. So sorry for your loss.

I'm not surprised by this at all. Never entered the guy's head (and most car driver's heads) that they can actually slow down, put their hazards on, even stop for someone in the road. Nope, driving as fast as they want anywhere they want is their "right", surpassing anyone else's right to live. Like most people in society today, this man is a psychopath in need of intense therapy. Should not be operating a vehicle of any kind.
