Showing Your Work: Human Authenticity Through Intentional Imperfection
Gotta say something before someone else also makes a video! In this one, I explore the shift in UA-cam’s aesthetic: a now hybrid between highly polished, professional videos and a raw, unfiltered style that embraces imperfections. By showing behind-the-scenes moments and visible “mistakes,” creators are connecting with audiences on a more human level, offering a refreshing contrast to the overly perfected content often seen in traditional media or now possible with AI and quality gear being available to the average consumer.
Thank you, David Whitehead, for having a similar breadth of UA-cam knowledge, which made creating the supporting material go very smoothly.

The Media’s Election Map Problem: Distorting Data and Misleading Voters
Переглядів 87119 годин тому
In this video, I dive into the problems with oversimplified political graphics and explore how data visualization can distort our understanding of voter preferences. With insights from Phil Warren, an image scientist and expert in data visualization, and other examples of graphical representations of voter information, I unpack how media coverage fails to represent reality and contributes to ou...

The Day After: How could this have happened?

You're going to see a lot of miscreants feeling emboldened right now. You're wondering how this has happened- how these people can feel smug and cheered by this news. You might be thinking, “what do they see that I don't?” That's the thing. They don't see. There's wool over their eyes. They've been intentionally misled. This is not an endorsement of his ideology. It only proves that a mindless,...

    Nice video! I wonder how much of not hiding your gear as part of UA-cam culture is the fact that it is adverticement. 1. Gear sponsors is one of the ways to finance your video. 2. Big UA-camrs show their gear because of this. 3. People copy who they see. 4. People show their gear without sponsorship (maybe in hope of getting sponsors as well).

    I had seen/heard the OG Broadway cast for SIX the musical before finally getting to see it in 2023. Jane Seymour was played by Aubrey Matalon in the show I attended and she was my favorite queen that night. Abby Mueller's Jane was "awkward mom friend" type, but Aubrey's Jane came across as someone much... meeker(?) Of course Jane's view of Henry was different than the other girls, but the way both actresses sang "Heart of Stone" really accentuated different parts of the tragedy of Jane, and Aubrey's performance made me see Jane in a different light. With Abby, the tragedy is a life cut short on the brink of a happy ending. Their marriage, though far from perfect, was one of love on both sides, and with a newborn son it was set to last. She doesn't crack until she thinks about her son growing up without her. She mourns the lives she's left behind. But Aubrey's Jane has realized that her relationship with Henry was not good. But the realization has come too late, she's already dead. She can't help her son and whatever ending she wanted with Henry she will not have. She mourns a life left unfinished. Both Janes are wonderful portrayals, and Heart of Stone is a beautiful song, but the difference in characterization just blew my mind.

      Wow! That's an amazing example. Thank you for sharing. I haven't seen six yet, but I certainly look forward to and wonder what my characterizations will be and how they will differ from your experience. 😊

    Good presentation. You are, however, making some of the same conflations as Hank Green. You are using bias to explain bias. As an example - you reference a common trope of anti-intellectualism. This, presented as factual, is a cognitive bias (more precisely - affect heuristics, self-serving bias (as it justifies your looking down on others), and attribution bias) and is used to give your words (bias) meaning. As a data nerd myself, I love to see people present data as information. I am always disheartened to see data viewed through a lens of statistical bias and rendered (via graphic, graph, or text) as the answer to ones own cognitive perspectives. Hank Green does this often and, in the referenced video, did this to the point he had to go back and edit his video to remove some of his emotional injections into his presentation. (And dial it back a bit to refocus his hostile attribution bias.) A better way to approach this topic might be to address the generalizability of the information to determine how accurately the data is being represented. In short, let the data speak for itself. Don't "tell" everyone how to interpret the data - this is usually intellectuals telling others they are anti-intellectual if the "interpretation" of the data is not as intended by the information presenter. (Again - bias used to describe bias.) This is a potential root cause of problem with election maps (and the data distortion that is intended to mislead). I would love to hear your take on causality in data. (This is a serious question and something I think is being missed in all of these types of discussions.) Cheers.

      Let me think on these points and I'll come up with a response! Thanks for engaging. I only touched on it, but maybe I could have gone into more detail: I'm concerned that the ENTIRE approach to presenting this kind of data is ineffectual. Are "maps" in any format the right way to visualize this at all? I'll try interrogating and revamping these thoughts. Maybe another video? 🤔

    • @Dean-f8g
      @Dean-f8g 2 дні тому

      @@evankinswood Thanks for the response. Re-reading my post, I might have sounded a little harsh. I meant no disrespect. I live and interact with data everyday. I am very interested in how data is transformed into information. Election data is semi-unique (as a generalization) in how quantitative data becomes qualitative information (quantitative discrete data is transformed into nominal and ordinal in presentation). When I first looked at the election map - my impression was that it was an interesting way to present the data as information. But, what was the point? I initially felt that it was misleading (and it does mis-represent the data) but I was struck with another thought (my own bias as I did not have access to the raw numbers) on how to read it. Reading the election map as a rural vs urban bias changes how the data is viewed as information. To say the land does not vote (which was stated in your video) - only accounts for population density (person per square meter). The Voter Preference and Population (VP&P) map could be interpreted as rural votes don't matter (bias). Are city votes are more important than country votes? The data visualized in the VP&P map would suggest that is the case (bias) - especially given the map makers description of voting density and what it takes to change results in less populated areas (bias). If you live in a rural area you would want to feel like you matter (bias). Hence, the general consumption election map - it is geographic representation of participants, within geographic boundaries, and not population density/value. As for the why of the various maps...I think this is where the causality of data comes in... I would also posit that this is why we have the electoral college. An understanding of where your food, fuel, and building materials come from verses consumer population density - is a consideration in causation and eventually root cause analysis. To get an answer for what occurred in this election - I think starting at the why of the data verses the where of the data would yield better results.

      @@Dean-f8g (oh I know the "why" of the election. Go back a couple videos 😉 It's why media literacy and analysis are so important to me) I'm interested in your point about the electoral college. So many people are convinced that a national popular vote is superior and that we should get rid of it for being "old and out of touch." Can you expand on that point?
