Florence city of dreams - moving to Tuscany, Italy in 2022
Great video. Your husband seems like a great guy to have a conversation with. I live on Long Island and am in the process of getting Italian Citizenship for my family. I went to Florence and loved it. It felt like home right away. I do want to buy property there but I am reconsidering maybe not moving there. I'm just worried about the healthcare, and I have an autistic child. Here in New York, the healthcare is incredible. I can literally get any appointment with the best specialists in the world within a week at most, sometimes even same day. The hospitals are top quality as well. So although Florence was amazing, this just scares me for the long term. And I've been trying to learn Italian for a year and I find it almost impossible. So I wouldn't even know what to do God forbid I had to call an ambulance for my family. I like videos like this because you aren't just talking all about Dolce Vita, you are really giving important information. I wouldn't mind going to Florence and staying for maybe a few months a year. I think a setup like that would work perfect, where you can keep your home base.
healthcare is provided by the State in Italy - you do not even need a private insurance and from what I am experiencing with family currently - it is far better than both Germany and the US - I have family in all those countries who used clinics and care homes - so can tell first hand. The same applies for autistic children as I have heard
Great video. I'm forced to do Airbnb because I can get one for $140/night while every single hotel is $400 or more per night in April, May, and September. If there are $200/night hotels in Florence, I would gladly stay, but I don't think under $400 exists in these months. It's like NYC prices. It's nuts. I hate Airbnbs. I'd rather a hotel.
If you are a successful digital nomad, then Italy is best for you.
Thank you for the lovely words. Bless your sweet soul. Xx

wow I had no idea, thank you so much for sharing that with me Olga!😍

Thank you so much for sharing 😊
I spent six weeks in Italy and saw the bureaucracy first hand. When we visited relatives there, they all said the same thing. Australia is a first world country, why do you want to live here?
Mava
Nessuno ti obbliga vivi dove vuoi
Hospital in Italy treat your illness (and generally they do that very, very well) but they don't pamper you and only share with you the bare minimum. It's easy to get the perception that you are left alone or not cared for in a proper way but that's rarely the case.
France is a mess atm
Good luck 🍀 You are such a sweet couple, maybe we meet on the road to our perfect place :)
Dolce far niente is something that is just made up stuff by foreigners. Italians enjoy their free time like everyone else in the world, nothing more nothing less. 🥱🥱
Lovely video, thank you
I didn‘t mind your talking over each other 😂. It sounded natural & not staged. It was like we were having a live chat at an Italian town square ❤
😢From italy to holland ...a big change !!! Terrible weather, grey sky, rain, cold, not very warm people and much less art!!! Will you get used do it? Florence an Italy are not easy to forget. Ps. I'm sorry that you had a bad experience with the hospitals in Florence but healtcare is very good in Italy on average...and free!!! I don't see what that Dutch patient was afraid of??? Best wishes and good luck anyway!!! Ciao😉
@@gabrielesantucci6189 the weather is not my favorite for sure but I DO love it here ♥️. Also the weather becomes less important when you are dealing with a severe illness that in Italy could not be addressed in time to save my husband’s life . Free healthcare does not mean much if you can’t get the help you need. So yeah, it’s a big change but I am just grateful to be here 🤞🙏🏻 🇳🇱 . And that my husband is doing better ✨. I adore Italy still. In our hearts forever ♥️
@@saarsolearesthe big problem was the language I think
I lived in the Miami area for four years where the temps would be 85 to 90 degrees F (about 30 - 33 degrees C) with 90 - 100 percent humidity and it was so uncomfortable: big canal rats, big cockroaches, big flies and mosquitoes--just bigger in general. Here, where I live now in SW Utah, it's 105 - 110 degrees F (about 40 degrees C) in the summer but dry heat. With the dry heat and UV radiation, there are a few cockroaches and ants but nothing formidable. Well, dry or humid it's pretty awful. So, I'm used to heat, in one form or another. I lived in Germany for two years and traveled throughout northern Europe: yes, much more regimented and people follow the rules. My people are from Denmark and Germany and I was raised in New England during the 1950s and 1960s, so I'm more used to that sort of culture.
I sent you an important one, watch it and replay it to me
Lovely video. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much! ♥
Hello, great channel and inspiring. Can I ask what was meant by family reunion and family staying together from the Italians, and why it was hard for you American husband? I am American, my grandparents are from Italy and my father but they all deceased and want to return to my heritiage
Thank you so much ♥️. That is so exciting you want to go back to Italy. Let me explain: we had seen and read that Italian laws favor making it easy for families to stay together in Italy, but in our case we did not find it easy at all to immigrate to Italy based on my EU status. In fact: our lawyer told us that it is the most difficult one out of all the immigration cases 🤷🏻♀️. For example: coming to Italy as a student or working for an Italian company seems to be a lot easier. I needed to be registered first before my husband could “join” me and that already took a year, then his joining me was dependent on all kinds of laws and we needed forms that were hard to obtain and no one knew where or exactly what to get. The offices and organizations did not know what to do with us and send us in circles . It took us over 1,5 years to get it sorted and I am sure that if we did not hire a lawyer we would never have figured it out. That’s why: if you are considering this move , don’t try to do it on your own - hire a lawyer! it’s truly the only thing to do and I wish we would have done it from day 1! Wishing you lots of luck and aside from all the confusing bureaucracy Italy truly is magical 🍀🇮🇹🍇
@@saarsoleares Thank you so much for explaining. You are very sweet. I do hear that the bureaucracy there is really tough. Last time I was there I got two parking tickets with my rental car and I still haven't paid them because I can't figure out how. I have called, been to website etc. I guess I will just pay when I am back but you are right a lawyer is only way to go it sounds. Thank you so much again and love your channel. Glad your husband is doing well again too. Do you still live in Italy? Or you left. I haven't seen all your videos yet
Most Countries in the world don't allow staying more than 3 months without burocracy sorted out. I have friends living abroad (and working) for more than 10 years and they STILL have to leave the Country every 3 months to renew the staying. So it is not an "Italy" thing. Also, for an italian (ot any other nation really) is waaay more difficult to stay in the U.S.A., the issues you mentioned are way harder the other way, cause the U.S. are so scared of people going there to stay.
@@saarsolearesReally? My wife EU citizen. I am American. All very easy. Get an apartment lease. Wife comes to Italy and register at the comune. 45 days later, she is an official Italian resident. I come to Italy. Apply for Carta di Soggiorno through the post office. I get Questura appointment. Go to meeting and get fingerprint. Now just wait for the CdS. Timing: my wife came to Italy in February. I arrived on April with our dog. Meeting at the Questura on late July. Overall: about 6 months. Easier than what I expected.
And not lawyer. Free.
Oh, I loved seeing the red roofed houses and church. Thank you for showing your dog. What a love! It would be beautiful to live there, but I don't think that they really want expats. They make you jump through hoops to move there. Beautiful video. Absolutely loved that waterfall. Where was it? My choice of Italy would always be going to Florence! Debby in Kansas
It’s definitely a long process here Debby! 🤪. The people are very welcoming to expats - it’s just the complicated bureaucracy that makes it so hard. The waterfall is the river Arno that runs right through the heart of Florence . 💦 Thank you so much for your kind comments ! ♥️
Lovely video. Thanks for sharing.
This is so lovely...thanks for sharing the moments with us!
Unfortunately the "Italian" humid heat is our cross: not only in Florence (very hot) but from May to September throughout Italy. Last year even until the end of October. In other places in Europe the climate is even happier.
What a cute little video on Florence! Italy is just stunning, I was lucky to live in Rome for two years. ❤
Thank...Live in the Netherlands for several years and yes the healthcare is very good. France is also good as long as you not leave in an isolate area. Lived also in Italy, and sadly the level of healthcare was not good at all, for my standards but yet a very nice country. I am surprised to see the amount of people encouraging to move to Italy when you are retiring, often to move to small villages/towns without even thinking about one of the most important factor which is the healthcare facilities and their efficiencies/quality...All in all I would pick Spain,France.
We are worried about the trend as well
@@couperino I agree! 🤞 I think most people don’t like to think about it too much as long as they are healthy (including myself 😃). Lesson learned 👍
Thank you Saar for a lovely and informative video. We are going to be staying at the Hotel Torre di Bellosguardo in September and are looking forward to exploring the Oltrarno and finding some good restaurants in this area.
Why not fly back to America for health care?
$$$$$$$$
Americans have spent 100’s of billions of dollars on Europe’s defense over the last 80 years .
Southern Italy is hotter , slower more corrupt bureaucracy and the people are not as sophisticated. Move to northern Italy if you want more sophisticated European experience.
Florence is in Northern Italy.
I can't hear this anymore. You guys aren't expats. Expats are temporarily assigned for a predetermined duration in a specific location, by their existing corporate employers, in their professional capacity. You're immigrants. Simple as that. If you're trying to leave again after some time you're not an immigrant, you're a guest worker, or maybe a tourist. Expats 😂 Think you're better or what? Because that's how y'all come across. No one except you guys like that trust me.
Buongiorno Saar. Your wonderful channel popped up on my YT feed yesterday. It could not have happened at a better time. I am doing 'deep dive' due diligence on applying for an ERV (Elective Residence Visa). Your experience with the health service mirrors comments I have read on other channels and blogs. Obtaining an ERV is challenging and every consulate seems to interpret the conditions differently. However, my main concern is the process of obtaining a PDS when you arrive in Italy. I have read that people are waiting 8 months for their first appointment at a Questura. This means it could be a year before you actually have a PDS card. The PDS is the 'key' to 'official' life - commune, SSN, doctor, buying a car etc, so I could be in limbo for maybe a year. I live in Bangkok and have 3 annual check-ups with my rheumatologist; the care is fantastic. Listening to your experience, I am concerned that gaining access to a rheumatologist might be extremely difficult until I am in the system. Like you, I am entitled to an S1, but I cannot register this without a PDS. Also, I have been told that some ASLs do not want to accept the S1. Catch 22 🤕. I have lived in France and Spain (Andalucia) and have restored houses in both countries. I've always wanted to experience 'la dolce vita', but the more I investigate, the more I see that life is not so 'dolce' 🥲. The non-lucrative visa for Spain is more straightforward. The financial requirements are lower, you can use an S1 for your health costs, and, when you arrive in Spain, you get a TIE residency card from your local police station or immigration office. I think I may return to España. You mentioned Cordoba. It is gorgeous. I ran a guest house in the 'pueblo blanco' of Medina Sidonia in the Provincia de Cádiz. Cádiz is an interesting town - history, food, beach, good transport connections, great bars and the locals are full of 'character' 😂 I hope you are both well again. If I can give you any ideas on España, please ask. Buena suerte 😎.
What is the name of the song in your video please
Hi there! it’s an opera from Puccini called “o mio babbino caro” 🎶
Thank you so much! Beautiful song ❤ and beautiful video, I would love to live in Italy 🥰
Lovely video. I have only been to Rome but I hope to get to other parts of Italy soon. 😊
I am an American who has lived in France with my wife since early 2023, and the same sort of issues in Italy are in France, except, the healthcare is on a slightly higher level here I think. Are there doctors and hospitals in Italy that are private that people can pay for there, or are they all government paid for facilities? Here there are both private and public facilities
Hi there! From what we have heard the health care in France is a lot better in terms of organization. We have talked to many people about this issue in Italy and even some Italians we know went to France and Switzerland to get healthcare there. It is not the quality of the doctors or nurses, but the system they work in and the lack of funds that causes these issues. There are definitely private hospitals and specialists in Italy , but in our experience certain things can only be done through the public system and the private doctors are not allowed to do certain procedures. So you still need both. 🤷🏻♀️
Yeah, Italy is not easy to foreigners... But it's truthful. You can live here but it will not be easy. Apart for burocracy, it's not easy to just change culture. There's a lot of issues that comes in that way that can sometimes be impossible to win over. Nonetheless it's possible. Definitely is way harder become Italians than just becoming citizens of any other countries in the world. You know? Things that values a lot usually cost a lot. 😉 Good luck, be happy. Wish you guts the best. 👍
Charming 😊
Beautiful video. TY🙏❤️
You are very sweet people. Thank you for your raw honesty and diplomacy too. ❤
Very useful info thank you
I'm sorry about the Long Covid. I know an Italian around 40 years of age who struggles with Long Covid but it came after his vaccination
I’m sorry to hear that Andrew and yes, our long Covid also started after 3th vaccination- still unsure about what caused all of this, just profoundly grateful we got through it 🙏🏻
I wish you had gotten to the point of why you moved sooner Saar OR PUT timestamps which is very common now on UA-cam. I'm sorry it didn't work for you...something of the energy was off for you at this time...perhaps in future... Is your husband quite a bit older than you? Holland is quite different than Italy. ALSO WHY didn't you guys try a different city? Italy is long so the climate is SO SO VARIED? From Siciliy, and beaches etc to mountains in Alps???? Puglia...so many regions.
Past lives, we have lived in places before then we are drawn to it again.
Yup! My feelings exactly--my entire adult life - 56 years.
Thank you for your beautiful videos about Florence! They are very sensuous and a joy to watch 💖
Ahw thank you Diana! Makes me happy you enjoy them ♥️
Are there good private hospitals in Florence? hospitals without wait times and high quality care?
There are! but I am not sure about the quality - we did experience going to a private specialist (not hospital), the problem was that we still needed to go to the public hospital because by law the private doctor was not allowed certain procedures. The system is the problem, not the quality of the doctors & nurses .
@@saarsoleares Thanks so much for your reply. I love your videos. One last question: are there many important procedures that private facilities will not handle? I'm asking because I'm thinking about bringing my elderly mother with me. Thank you.
@@oscarm.1417 Hi! it’s hard to say because I can only talk from our own experience: but in our case , yes there were a lot of procedures that the private specialist could not do - we still needed to get a GP through the public system that then could refer us to the public hospital where they could do those medical treatments. It was all very confusing to us and we ended up in circles 🤷🏻♀️. Hopefully this was just our experience and if you get a private insurance and private hospital from the start it might be better 🙏🏻. when looking for private insurance I heard good things about Poste.it - the diamond plan. Good luck with everything! ✨🦋
@@saarsoleares Thank you Saar. I sincerely appreciate your reply.
Hi, i love your video, thank you for your advices, I’m Mexican/American my husband is German, and we were planing to move to Florence or Valencia in a few months, we thought will be easy as he’s European, but as much as I love Italy i may now choose Spain.
Thank you so much for sharing ♥️ . They are both amazing cities , wishing you so much luck with your new adventure! 🍀🌈✨

I want to move to italy for a more full life. I live in america I work 50hrs a week and have no downtime I'm always tired. I want to go to sicily to get in touch with my heritage limit my options and just slow down. What are work options for expats
First time watching your channel. The topic was interesting. I was finding it difficult listening to both of you when you talk over each other. Maybe it’s my age and the different tones of both voices but just to let you know. Sorry about your health care experiences. I’ve heard this said before in other regions. As a dual citizen I hope to spend time in both Italy but keep my hard earned Berkeley home. Many good wishes!
Thank you and yes please excuse the talking over! this was the first time we did it and we need to get better at it 😅. Dividing your time sounds like a perfect solution. Aside from the health care, Italy is still the most magical place in the world ✨. So much beauty and kind people. I adore it! hope this comes through as well . All the best! 🌈
Very nice only if something happens to you who look after you, because Italian has social care.
i think you finally it the wall that stands below all the beautiful veils of Italy. Which doesn't make the veils untrue, but at the same time doesn't make the wall untrue. And that is one of the reasons why Italians leave Italy (even if they eventually return for the other reasons :D). The burocracy is stupid. Togheter with the Indian one, they are the worst in the world. They both look nice until.... something happens in their mind (or somewhere). They just stop being who they are. They become "the system" And they are proud of it And they basically become robots who can't solve the easiest problem because "it's the system" (similar like people that says "it's the law" or "it's the medic system") They refer to it in a way that makes you think they believe that is something "supernatural" that cannot be touched or improved or even disregarded, if necessary. Somehow they don't realize or they forgot that "they are system" and that free will together with good sense, are more important then rules. they forgot that the "system" is made (or brought on) by humans (at least for what i know) and they could change that if it's not working. making it more thin and efficient, at least. So they have hospitals and rules and equipment, but they will lack somewhere else. Let's enjoy the food and the landscapes, it's better... sadly
Must have had an awful xperience in my country. I am really sorry
