    Thank you for sharing your experience Brian. This is one of the most informative videos out there on franchising - stuff that people don't talk about and can save your skin. Since the franchise agreement is usually attached to the FDD - you can see what is "industry standard" it is worth getting the FDD for their competitors to see how reasonable they are. If 5 other emerging brands in the same industry is 24 months in liquidated damage and the one you're signing up with is 60...probably highly negotiable.

    From someone who worked for Mr. Horowitz, he should stick with investing. Having myself been in the restaurant industry for 20+ years, including an owner operator for 5 years, Mr. Horowitz was definitely a fish out of water in my opinion. His lack of experience and knowledge of the industry even after 5 years of ownership in the wingstop concept definitely overshadowed his Harvard training and his lucrative bank account. He is the exact model of an individual who is unable to buy their way into a McDonalds franchise. I will save him the embarrassment of the details of his failures. However, as an advanced degree holder myself, education and/or tons of money will not make one successful in the industry. That was actually my last words of advice to him on my last day of employment in that train wreck of a franchise. I think he only lasted about 6 more months before smartly bailing out before he lost his arse. Having helped first time, wealthy wannabe restaurantuers, my advice is to start off with one restaurant. Bring in an experienced operator for guidance. I did this for a first-time wealthy wannabe restaurtuer with a McAlister's Deli franchise. Note...franchise consultants are nowhere near operators. Most could not run a restaurant on their own. (One of Mike's mistakes in giving the keys to the kingdom). Learn the ins and outs of that one restaurant. It will definitely be at least a year or two before you should expand and give the keys to an operator to oversee your growth. Unfortunately, Mike and his all talk franchise consultant experienced right-hand man, were unreceptive and all-knowing, speeding down the rails to a derailment. It was very obvious to me and why I bailed very quickly- just a couple month's out of training where I was running 5 of his restaurants. Be very wary of gold tongued individuals in this industry. They are no help to operators of franchises or self created concepts.

    Risk with franchising is huge. When done properly it may be profitable but the work you have to put in is enormousm its basically a job to operaye a franchise. For most franchise location is a huge factor to success. The risk you undertake is significantly higher than if you were to buy a property and rent it.

    • @brianbeers
      @brianbeers 21 день тому

      Agreed running any business increases risk vs buying a rental property, which is why cash flow can be significantly better There are many territory based franchises that don’t require a expensive build out or leases

  • @tustak
    @tustak 22 дні тому

    Missing risk. Always take the risk-reward ratio into account. Borrowing tons of money to leverage cash flow is a great way to bankrupt.

    • @thatsagoodone8283
      @thatsagoodone8283 21 день тому

      Id argue with 1) competence (you should know stuff about real estate before making such a decision) 2) loan to value ratio (if you are getting a very good deal, even if you cant find tenants to rent it to s.o., you could potentially sell it again and get out of the debt). 3) criteria of the decision (can you pay an additional apartment with you salary? Nice. Even if someone moves out, you are not under pressure, you know how to get money back from taxes because of that? great!) 4) additional outside factors To always have an opinion before you have studied and understood the whole system, always strikes me weird. There are so many regulations, tricks and things to consider... I would not do that outside of my country for example. Yet, so many ppl shit on it without knowledge. The argument for it could be: calculateable cashflows. You know how much you can raise the rent. Your debt is a leverage against inflation and you can set it down for 20 years.

      Sorry Brian, this is a bad take. I’m not saying one is better than the other, but you miss a ton of other factors that make RE a good investment, and then down play the risks with franchise business, mostly operations. I’ve seen many franchises go down, lose everything. I’ve seen it in RE too. This simply doesn’t paint a complete picture.

    • @brianbeers
      @brianbeers 20 днів тому

      Agreed that real estate can be a great option at the right time and that there are no guarantees in franchising. It takes a lot of hard work. But the cash flow potential is greater in business. Thank you for the comment, I like to hear all opinions and ideas.

    • @brianbeers
      @brianbeers 20 днів тому

      I agree that no financial decision should be made without first knowing as much as you possibly can about yourself and about the opportunity. Real estate does support wealth, I am offering that franchising can be a great opportunity to jump start your financial growth. With potential reward, there is also risk. Thanks for the comment. Looking forward to hearing from you again soon.

    Systematic evil doesn't have a leg to stand on without stupid people buying in. Look for something that helps your community instead of leeches from it (and in this case, poisons it). Franchises are what took us away from having good communities and a healthy environment in the first place. Care about the environment you live in, instead of just being another pirate playing the hustle game.

    After a while are franchises passive income?

    • @brianbeers
      @brianbeers 2 місяці тому

      @JTclips-v4q The best answer to this question is, it depends. Not what you want to hear, but it depends on the brand, it depends on how much money you personally need / want out of the franchise, etc. One thing that is generally required for your franchise to be passive, is growth. You need to scale the business so that you have the flexibility and capital to hire the right person to run it for you. For instance, I have a COO running my 33 automotive franchises and spend very little time focused on them.

    Jeez. Just when I'm about to start making moves, the whole landscape is going to change (because, let's be honest, there's NO WAY Harris doesn't "win". They're NOT going to let Trump back in there, NO MATTER WHAT.)

      @stormhawk31 It will be important to pay attention to what happens with these decisions no matter who is in office next year. Bottom line is, regardless of the outcome, we will work hard and find a way to succeed. Good Luck! Thank you for tuning in.

    I don’t trust a man who doesn’t look like he can walk up a 2 mile hill with a 12 pack of sprite on his shoulder

    My new neighbor is 40 years old with 3 children and a 73 year old mother that is sick.My neighbor comes from poverty and she thinks all debt is bad.Mind you she doesn't have the $ 3,000.00 needed for medical needs for her child. My wife and I are 65 and 63 and we bought a 122,000. dolar new home in 1993 and we remortged all we could to buy Gold and Silver and miners to % 320,000. and had cheap Cuba trips to recgage form our streesful jobs. We have a $ 40,000 like and a $ 20,000. line that we always keep double paying or the set paymenyt so we are a 820 credit score. NOW, Gold and Silver will take us for a big ride and the realestate with to $ 650,000 and probably much higher.

    Isn't cash flow misleading as well as it can be manipulated by adjusting the timing of payments or accelerating receivables? Can't they also redirect cash flows from financing or investing to operating cash flows? I mean after all a company can operate a loss of say $14 million but say they are cash flow positive $6 million. Seems like another ebitda like scam.
