Program Notes
Welcome to another season of experiences worth sharing! Over the coming year, NNC will explore mystery, love, time, food and more through music and poetry. The simple, yet stunning opening of Frank Ticheli's Earth Song has inspired singers and audiences alike since it's release in 2007 and provides the central theme of today’s concert.
If you’ve never been to a NNC concert you’re likely wondering what kind of music we perform. We strive to share high quality music that connects with a modern audience while honoring the long tradition of choral singing. On this program you’ll hear choral standards like Rachmaninoff’s Bogoroditse Devo, lesser-known a cappella gems like Charles Wood’s Oculi Omnium, and modern American masterpieces in Dale Trumbore’s In the Middle and Jake Runestad’s monumental Come to the Woods that feature our amazing collaborative pianist, Melissa Ray.
This concert also marks the beginning of a season-long project. The music of celebrated British composer, Bob Chilcott, has been central to NNC’s repertoire. Over the coming months, we will present individual songs from Circlesong, a multi-movement work for choir, piano, and percussion that will culminate in a full performance on the season’s 5th concert: On Time (March 16, 2025). We hope you’ll join us for the adventure and share in the experience of discovering a larger composition through multiple interactions, spread out over time.
While choral singing is the art form that brings us together, it’s the experience of being together, working toward a common goal and the relationships that form along the way that really matter. Our mantra, “An Experience Worth Sharing” is a shorthand way to express that core value and realize our guiding mission:
