Richard Dawkins on Paula Zahn

Interview of Richard Dawkins on Paula Zahn as an extension on CNN's story on atheism. Certainly too short an interview, but good to see Professor Dawkins finally getting on American TV.
David Brent is Made Redundant
Переглядів 526 тис.17 років тому
One of the most poignant bits from the brilliantly funny series 'The Office' (UK). This is the last scene of series two in which David Brent is made redundant. Great nuanced scene from Ricky Gervais who until this show hadn't been an actor in any medium.

It's just like Dawn said in the first episode, Brent was just a "sad little man". The clown persona he had was just a mask to hide the sadness.

Yes we all loved this nasty little troll David Brent. But try working for him? Ive seen a multitude of boss man types disguised as little Hitler. Favoritism, racist, and boorish protecting those who bully others for the amusement of they're little clique work buddies. Folks, Managers like David Brent are funny as $ on here. But when you encounter them? it spells trouble. Most likely? the next Manager will be a friend of these two, and will begin the process of bringing in his own special little clique. The wheel spins round and round and round

The desperation of a man about to lose the one thing in his life that gives him any purpose. For a comedy show, The Office could be so crushingly tragic at times.

I thought Jennifer's reaction vs Neil's was totally different. With Neil's being more remorseful and Jennifer emotionless. I wonder were they directed in this way?

What heightens the emotional impact of this scene is the realization that David Brent, despite his embarrassing and insecure demeanor, is a genuinely lovable character. In this moment as a viewer, you're witnessing the authentic and vulnerable side of Brent. While he may struggle to keep his ego in check, he is not inherently malicious. Brent's actions stem from a deep desire for acceptance and love from those around him, albeit expressed in impractical ways. This starkly contrasts with the detestable character of Chris Finch, who abuses Brent's friendship and only acts with selfish intentions. Despite Brent's flaws, he is not the antagonist of the show.

Only Gervais could pull off the dramatic , emotional scene with so much character and then end it with "Which philosopher said that?" "Dolly Parton"...."and people say she is just a big pair of tits"... it's pure genius. Nothing will ever top this show...not just because of its pure quality but also because of the woke,pc bull shit country the UK now is. We are destroying humour, which is a staple part of English culture.

The tragedy here is Brent knew he was gone for a while but didn't have the ability to stop it and he knew his career was basically done, and this was the moment he was dreading. He had no control and that brought him to his knees

This scene breaks my heart. You know he's been offered a lot of money to go, but it's all about his personal integrity. He admits he's been underperforming, and deep down he's a good Manager, but he's been neglecting his staff and his role. I think both Neil and Jennifer like him and understand him to an extent, but sadly can't get involved. What a stunning performance from Gervais; you don't get this level of acting from the bullshit US counterpart.

The threat of redundancy is such a big deal to him because he knows what it means for his life - in the office he is, or was, the king of his little world for most of the time. But with that taken away and with the documentary having exposed him as a coasting joker (which he admits in the show), he knows a tougher life or repping, or something else which he perceives to be harder and much lower status, beckons. He has just been shown his future and he's very scared.

This scene resonates, too, because I feel like a lot of us have done this at some point - pretending you didn't really care about a certain decision, only to realise what that decision will actually mean for you.
