Hi Saskia! 👋🏾 This message is specifically for you! I saw your comment earlier today during the live stream of this sermon and wanted to answer your question. I did leave a message but I don't think you would have seen it as the sermon came to a close and the live comments are no longer available. First I'd like to say you ARE seen, heard, loved and valued! I was glad to see you tuned in as you expressed this is your first encounter with Christianity and so I'd like to say welcome! I hope you enjoyed and were blessed by the service. 😊 Now, onto the question you asked. The point of prayer is not to form a rigid schedule where you have to pray, for example three times a day for an hour and if you don't then you've failed to successfully connect with God. Not at all. The point of prayer is for you, Saskia, to connect with your Heavenly Father, who loves and cares for you. You see we weren't made to walk this life alone, to be alone or even feel alone. We were created by a real God who is intentional and purposeful. And His intention for us, and for you is to be in regular, daily fellowship. He wants you to know Him as He also knows you. You were made in His image. The more we read His Word (the bible) and spend time with Him (also in prayer), the more we will become like Him. Become like Jesus, the Son of God. That is the primary point of prayer. Of course, He also wants to hear your needs, your prayer requests, your desires, insecurities, fears and worries. But this is the point. That the God who made you, Saskia, and knows you inside out wants a relationship with you. He wants your heart. So there is no set structure you have to follow in order to communicate with God. You can start by praying to Him as little as 5 minutes or as much as an hour or more if that's what you'd like or feel able to. Don't feel you need to put pressure on yourself. God is understanding and HE wants you to be free in His presence. To enjoy spending time with Him and Him with you. Since you said this is your first encounter with Christianity and from your question I'm assuming you'd like to begin your Christian journey I'd like to suggest that you start out by spending anywhere between 5 - 15 minutes a day talking to God in prayer. Feel free to spend more if you'd like though. Many wonder how, they don't know how or where to start but just think of God as a close friend that you respect and talk to Him the way you would someone you were friends with. So you can be casual. You don't need to use fancy grammar or ye olde English haha. You can be yourself (He already knows you) and just open up to Him. You can share your thoughts, ask questions, express how your feeling, how your days going or been (feel free to even ask His haha) really anything at all. And then I would also suggest spending some time in the Bible (the Holy Word of God Himself that He left to help, guide, comfort, correct, instruct and equip us). The primary source of hearing from God is through His Word. Its how he often speaks to us and our situations. Perhaps you could begin by spending time reading and studying a part of the bible and then ending in a time of prayer. (A good place to start in the bible is the Gospels, so Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. They introduce us to the life of Jesus and His ministry whilst on earth). Again, as your starting out it doesn't have to be very long at all. What matters is that your consistent. If you forget on a day or two or aren't able to, don't beat yourself up. Just try again the next day. God's not angry or disappointed. He is proud of your willingness to seek and get to know Him. I dont know if you have a bible? If you don't you can get them online from bookstores or even sites like amazon. If you don't or can't get access to a physical bible right now you can download the YouVersion Bible App for free from your appstore on both android and apple and other operating systems. Its honestly a great app to download regardless as it provides daily devotionals on so many topics, helpful videos, guided prayer and more. And if your wondering what bible translation to choose I'd suggest perhaps NIV, NLT or ESV but feel free to choose any you feel comfortable with. Also when it comes to prayer God is everywhere and cares about everything to do with us. So don't just feel limited to your designated prayer time. You can speak to Him when your out and about, when your eating, lying down, whenever and wherever. (I'd encourage you to read Psalm 139 in the bible as it relates to this). Always remember nothing is too big or too small to God. He cares about it all. In the bible James 4:8 says 'Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.' So when we draw near to God, He draws near to us. Now before I end, there's something very important I'd like to share. Since you said you haven't encountered Christianity before I believe that means you may not have given your life to Christ, that is accepted Jesus Christ as your Personal Lord and Saviour, repenting and confessing your sins and being forgiven by the blood of Jesus. Which means you are not yet saved. And we ALL need to be saved. John 3:16 says 'For God so loved the world that He gave His One and Only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.' This is a very important step to becoming a Christian, a child of God and being heaven bound. In fact it is the very first step to it all. One we all must do if we want to be forgiven and reconciled back to God. It is also called becoming born again. (It talks about this in John 3:1-21). So how do we do this? Well the Bible says in Romans 10:9-10 that 'if you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.' Honestly there is no set in stone specific prayer you must pray, it’s more about the condition of your heart. Some of the important components can be remembered with ABC: • ADMIT that you are a sinner in need of a Savior, • BELIEVE that Jesus died for you and rose again, confessing and renouncing your sins • COMMIT to live the rest of your life for Him. Here’s one example: Heavenly Father, forgive me of all my sins. I confess I am a sinner in need of your grace and I have sinned against you. Make me brand new. I believe Jesus died for me and rose again so I could live for you. Fill me with your Holy Spirit so I could know you, serve you, and follow you for the rest of my life. My life is not my own-today I give it to you. Thank you for new life! In Jesus’ name I pray, amen. If you decide to pray this prayer, believing in faith, then congratulations, YOU are now a part of the family of Christ, the Church. The bible says that heaven rejoices over just one sinner that is saved so hallelujah, know that right now all of heaven rejoices over you! The next step is to now walk daily with God, fellowshipping with Christ by reading the bible, praying and pursuing righteousness and holiness. And with that a big part is joining a bible believing, Holy Spirit filled church. Its important not to do life by yourself and as a new Christian being around like minded people as you grow in the faith who can help you, pray with and for you, disciple you etc as you walk this journey is vital. I enjoyed listening to this message, but one thing I think is very important, especially when you've had mountains of Judas's in your life is the Spirit of Discernment'. Without this, you are prone to make the same mistakes over and over leading you to bad future thoughts of everyone and anything. And also, you may think you love folk because you give from your abundance, but are you giving with a pure/good heart? Some people give but resent it later down the line mainly because they didn't see the result from the person that they expected. So give with a loving and willing heart and don't expect anything in return.
