🌊 Find Your Flow: Happy Habits #13
Переглядів 232 роки тому
Find activities where you become completely absorbed in what you're doing-and do more of them... Research Overview In the attempt to answer the question of "What constitutes a good life?" researchers have discovered a concept called "flow"-where happier people seem to have more experiences where they are fully immersed in the present moment [1]. Flow is defined as an experience of enjoyment, co...

The 'hedonic treadmill' describes a phenomena where we experience declining satisfaction over time. One way to subvert this downhill treadmill is to do something counterintuitive: Take a break. Despite not wanting to take a pause from food, drinks and experiences we enjoy, breaks actually make us enjoy these experiences more [1, 2]. CORE CONCEPT It's human nature to want more of good things. If...
😴 Sleep 7-8 hours per night: Happy Habit #11

Getting enough sleep also increases your capacity for insight by three times by allowing your mind to restructure new memories, extract knowledge from ...

An easy way to do this is to replace an unhappy habit with a happy one. In that vein, I want to share one of the key behaviors that I've been working hard to get myself to stop doing. Given I grew up in suburban America, materialism and capitalism is deep...
Speak to Yourself Like a Friend | Happy Habit #10
Переглядів 162 роки тому
During times of crisis, one of the most effective coping mechanisms is to create what is called 'self-distance'. One of the many ways to create self-distance is to speak to yourself like you would a friend: using third-person pronouns and kind, supportive language. In this weeks edition I talk about this behavior. In the newsletter I provide some tips about how to make it a habit. Subscribe for...

Most people mistakenly think that having small talk with strangers will be unpleasant and won't make them happy, but the research shows that the opposite is true. Our lives are busier than ever, or at least it seems like they are. We carry devices in our pockets that we pick up thousands of times a day. The notifications from our screens are incredibly distracting and allow us to soak up every ...

Their calls for your to stop owning property is primal jealous over what they could not hold onto. Her ancestors would have scalped and pillaged yours if they had the means to just as quickly. Youve been tricked by the lie of the Noble Savage. Your bigoted view is dated and reductive.

Hi John, I love this! I'm in the 30 Day challenge also and writing about the challenges faced in this moment, and how they are microcosms of the broader systems failings. We need more voices sharing this broader systemic thinking, drawing from Indigenous peoples - the original systems thinkers - to, like you say, usher in preferred futures. Thank you for sharing your process and the books you're reading (already added to the reading list) and I'm looking forward to reading your final book!

Some great ideas are mentioned. But so many questions, perhaps to follow up on. If states can't even handle global corporations any more, then how can cities or regions? See also the rise of modern mercenaries. If we want to end capitalism, how can millions of kind people face the psychopath rich elites that both benefit from the status quo, and have millions working for them, doing their bidding, either out of ambition, or out of security of income (most are still serfs to the system)? How can we do a revolution in a healthy way, as they tend to be led by angry personalities with the same kind of attitude as those they do away with or worse? (Russian Tsar/Stalin. French King/Robespierre, Hitler, Mao, Pol Pot) How to help people invest what seems natural to me/you, but millions see as idiotic, as they're stuck in tribalism, fear of immigrants or gay people? How to make the shift possible and get millions on board?
