Port Chicago - Doctors of Dynamite
Port Chicago was a major munitions loading depot in California. All munitions used by the US in the World War II (WWII) Pacific Theater went through Port Chicago.
The worst tragedy on the Home Front in WWII occurred on July 17, 1944 when an explosion obliterated the port and its primarily African American operators.
In the aftermath, the US Navy prosecuted black sailors who were courageous enough to refuse working under terrible conditions. As stated by Park Ranger Betty Reid Soskin, the sailors' resolve can be described as the ‘embers’ of the modern civil rights movement. Eighty years later, reflecting on the repercussions of the trial, the US Navy has finally exonerated the workers.

If you couldn't use the New Freedom from Fear because it used the phrase "I can't breathe" than you just violated FDR's Freedom of Speech and Expression... jfc
My, how striking Mrs. Roosevelt’s accent is. Truly, the extinct Transatlantic was one of the most interesting of all American dialects.
Starting at the 4:42 point, the numbers relating to the 100th Battalion and 442nd RCT need to be corrected: 10,000 served instead of 18,000; 848 Bronze Stars instead of 4,000; and 371 Silver Stars instead of 560. You should add 29 Distinguished Service Crosses as well. Also, at the 5.47 point, that is his old grave marker. The current grave marker properly identifies him as a Medal of Honor recipient from Company F, 442nd RCT. Mahalo.
The iconic photograph drew me to this video… beautifully done.
My immigrant maternal grandparents adored FDR. They kept a framed picture of him on their dining room wall. When the POTUS died, it was one of the only times my mother ever saw her dad in tears. Both grandparents and Mom are gone now, too, because this all happened 80 years ago come April 12, 2025. Sidenote, my father died on the same day in 1989.
Right in the midde of the service, FDR's beloved dog Fala let out one horrible howl. It has also been said that within 3 seconds of his master's death Fala ran out of the house hysterical and screaming. Fala lived a nice long life and died in 1952, age 12. Fala was buried right near Eleanor and Franklin.
Just as the 13 colonies seceded (that's what it was) from England the Southern States seceded. It was the same thing carry out in much the same way. The Southern States wanted to be separated from the Union but was forced back in, at gun point. Freedom. I am thankful the freedom I have even knowing that the Southern States are a nation in excile.
So good.
It was King George VI and his consort, Queen Elizabeth (later the Queen Mother) who joined in the visit to Top Cottage --NOT Queen Elizabeth II, who succeeded her father after his death in 1952. This is a rather glarind historical error and should be corrected on the tape.
This is Jeanette nail my older sister was born in 2-12-1945
Yea ! The book wasn't destroyed in the McClean house fire .
Amazing.
I would *never* have been able to read that without my voice breaking - thank you :)
Looking at your channel last night, I saw that you're ALL about smearing the great, peerless BEST POTUS IN HISTORY and endlessly harping on one unfortunate WARTIME happening - here's some news for you: Bad things ALWAYS HAPPEN IN WARTIME!! Check out some history books.
Three terms in office speaks volumes... 🇿🇦
Thank you. Love the legacy and all it means.
The iceboat I sailed had the mast at the other end. The single blade and steering were at the front. Room for two.
Check out some MODERN iceboats, they'll blow your mind!
What a great man he was!!!
Why is Eleanor spelled wrong on the desk?
It was a gift from a young student, and he spelled her name wrong. She displayed it because she thought if he ever visited Val-Kill she wanted him to see it.
You are pronouncing our family name wrong. It’s not ‘sookley’ it’s pronounced as it looks. Suck…ley. Suckley.
We could have done just fine without Social Security.
I grew up with Descendants of Japanese that were in these Internment Camps. It was hard times for everyone then, but especially them that lost all that they owned. The way I understand it. They were reimbursed for there property 20 years after the war and the exchange rate was unfair. Most went on with their lives best they could. My childhood friends father was in these internment camps and went on to farming after the War. I believe they were sugar beet farmers.
Wow that was a cool story. I don't blame her. How dare they ignore her because she was new money lol that's a great idea🎉
What a wonderful treasure this is in a world that is a lot tougher…these times were hard but more simple. Thank you Mrs. Roosevelt and to the Roosevelt family of today.
Terrible.
Eleanor is a great reader. Thank you.
I went to Val-Kill for the first time and I thought it was great. To walk the grounds was amazing.
Went to ValKill today. It was so beautiful. The trails is a must.
Was not expecting to see my great uncle (and grandfather) featured on your channel. Holy cow. Thanks

Franklin Roosevelt's funeral began at 4:00 pm. At that exact moment there was a brief but powerful thunderstorm over New York City.
Going home going home😢😢😢😢😢😢
It's 2023 and I'm watching this with tears streaming down my face. An amazing humanitarian, the greatest president in history.
One year later me too.
Very cool
Awesome video, thanks!

If anti-vaxers could spend one day in FDR's condition would they feel the same about vaccines?
What a great POTUS!
Remember. Never again!
Former FDR VP Henry Wallace wrote in his diary that, with each mile of the funeral train, he could feel the New Deal slipping away... ☹️ as per John Nichols, author of The Fight for the Soul of the Democratic Party
4:07 18 cars leaving DC with Truman, Cabinet, Supreme Court, 2nd train with many others... 4:49 Hyde Park.
That was a great day, spend your time with wonderful natures outdoor .
More people need to watch this!!!!!!!
🌎☮️
Sad day like JFK😔
We need to stop letting great presidents die in tiny beds
🤣
Alva was born into a wealthy slave holding family. She was snubbed by New York Society because of her Confederate heritage. She never did anything substantial to make restitution to Blacks
I enjoy these clips as I will not be able to visit these places. Thank you.
Absolutely enthralling! Really enjoyed this!
Thanks for this. At Warm Springs, I was struck by how small the Little White House was, but I'd never considered that all the houses FDR built were so much smaller than Springwood, or that he had given away the mansion he'd inherited (plus, as your ranger mentioned in our tour of the Vanderbilt house, FDR encouraged its owner to donate it to the NPS!) Embracing life on a human scale was so very different from attitudes among the wealthy before the Depression, or, indeed, today.
