Fahrenheit 451: The role of anti-intellectuallism
Переглядів 602 місяці тому
Thank you for watching this video, and welcome to my channel! 📚🖤 Fahrenheit 451 had been on my TBR list for ages, and finally, after many months, I had the chance to read it. I was pleasantly surprised by the subject matter, but also by the way the author shifts the style of description depending on which character is speaking. I also find it fascinating how this book, written in the 1950s, rem...

The Great Gatsby: Hedonism, Narcissism and Lady-less Behaviour
My favorite trivia about this story is that Shelly came up with it during a fun night of exchanging spooky stories with other writer friends.
I know it is such a cool story 🥺
I read Frankenstein for the first time last month and I absolutely loved it. I found myself feeling so bad for the monster and felt so much hatred towards Victor.
Same! I genuinely was so heartbroken for him. It was not fair for Victor to bring him to life only to abandon him right away
The netflix show of Haunting of Hill house is one of the greatest adaptations of the book in my opinion. Though they do change a few things obviously. And one line stayed with me. It was said by Mrs Dudley if I remember correctly: "No-one stays at Hill House after dark." Just a great show. Great book. The movie from 1999 is also great (and closer to the book) Great video as well. You're doing really great. Keep up the good work <3
@agingersopinion4820 Thank you so much for the comment! I was not aware that the adaptation was so good. I am not great with horror films/series, but if you say it's that good, I will definitely give it a try!
@@darkesthourreads You should start with the movie from 1999. That's a lot more tame. The show is R-rated I think. Great, but really really scary and suspenseful at places
Self awareness is knowing that I would definitely be the first one to die in a horror movie. It was lovely to start the morning with a video that has nothing at all to do with current events, thank you!
@@xujhan no, thank you for watching! I hope everything is okay with you in these circumstances 🥺
Yeah, if worst comes to worst I can always claim UK citizenship and flee to the ancestral homeland. But my heart breaks for all the people who are going to suffer in the next few years. Hope you're doing okay too!
@xujhan I live in the UK, so I won't really be "affected" by this, but my heart cries for all the people that will 🥲
Ooh, nice microphone quality! I've been on a nostalgia kick going back through my old teenage fiction shelf, currently working through Lucifer's Hammer by Larry Niven. Apocalyptic fiction isn't usually my thing but for Niven I make an exception. I should make a mental note to see if I can get a copy of Bunny from the library. Thanks for the video, looking forward to the next one!
I just read the Plot of Lucifer's Hammer and omg it sounds incredible! I will definitely give it a chance 😊
I hope you like it! But no pressure to actually get around to it of course, I have some things on my book list that have been there for a decade. Never enough hours in the day, eh?
Where are you from? I'm curious about your accent. Love it!
@@juliasouto5284 thank you so much! I am originally from a small town near Barcelona, but I am currently living in the UK now ☺️

Oh, God, i never thought i would see someone hating Percy Shelley as fiercely as I do 😂 Great recomendations!
@@marinadeodato5419 thank you so much! Percy Shelley is my sworn enemy, we should jump him when we die and go to hell (hopefully in many many years after living our best life here)
It's funny how this video popped up in my recommended videos and it's a nearly perfect list of books that I have considered reading this autumn! I have wanted to read a classic and now I'm happy in my choice because I just started reading Frankenstein two days ago and now I'm very excited to keep reading it. P.S. If I hadn't already clicked subscribe earlier in the video, the monologue about Percy Shelley definitely would have made me hahaha
@@esterelina omg thank you so much! You are so kind 🖤 Please let me know what you think of Frankenstein!
I don't think it really counts as horror, but the most horrific book I've read is definitely Never Let Me Go. Thanks for the spooky video! When I clicked I didn't think I was signing up to perpetuate a vendetta against Percy Shelley, but I'm here for it.
@@xujhan The book sounds fantastic!!!! Thank you for the comment as well ☺️
What an amazing video!! Karl Marx talks a lot about the things and situations you're analizing (remembering that Marx is not a communism ideologist, but rather a capitalism scholar). I'd just add that the powers "pulling the strings" behind our materialistic dictatorship are not the governments, but rather the burguesie that funds policies and politicians, besides practically everything we integrate into this society. In Marx words, "the dominant ideas of a society are the ideas of the ruling class". We see what they want us to see, we eat what they want us to eat, we do what they want us to do, we desire what they want us to desire, we consume what they want us to consume...
You are so, so right! I personally believe the same exact thing, that the bourgeoisie are the ones who actually control all the governments in the world, but I wanted to focus more on other topics of discussion for this video. Great addition, though! Thank you ☺️
I always say that Lolita is a horror book (also one of my favorite books), and that it is soooo so strange and brutal that Hollywood turned it into a romance piece. I can't be certain about what were Nabokov's intentions and what feelings he wanted to evoke when writing that book, but reading it I couldn't feel almost nothing but horror and disgust, and it is not only for the pedophilia, but because Humbert is a disgusting human being in his totality. For me, it seems almost like the movies and book are completely different pieces with completely different purposes, with some communalities like same characters and the theme of pedophilia.
@@dudabertoli8107 I couldn't agree MORE. You have literally taken all my thoughts from my brain. I think the reason the Lolita films made the book look like a romance is because the directors find Humbert relatable. Many men find Humbert relatable because they view Lolita as an object to explore their fantasies
I'm so sorry for typing a comment right after reading the title but as someone who was considered a nympthette by several close men growing up and read this book as a preteen in a very complicated situation, I feel a VERY strong urge to point out that this story has nothing to do with womanhood. This is a book about a grown man and a child. Not even a "coming of age" young lady, a little girl. This is not about the nightmare of womanhood at ALL. It is the reality of girlhood. The sexualisation, isolation and abuse one experiences as a grown woman is NOTHING similar to the experience of a child. I feel as though looking at this story through a lens that focuses on feminism as whole rather than how the patriarchy makes paedophilia towards young girls affect every facet of sex really softens and lessens the impact. If the many things that happened to me had happened in my adulthood, I wouldn't be half the wreck I am now
@ashasarca Thank you for sharing your story, and I am SO sorry you had those horrific experiences. My heart is with you. I think I chose this title because I saw Lolita grow from the state of "girl" to the state of "woman" (even though she is only 17), which for me represented one of the most important stages of womanhood, the passage of actually becoming a "Woman". I also chose it because I think all the characters interact with Lolita as a "Woman" rather than what she is, a "Child". I do really see your point, though, and I think your point of view is fascinating. Thank you again for sharing your view
As someone who have gone through these type of experiences as well I saw the term "Womanhood" more like an umbrella term for female experiences.. not of any specific age
@dudabertoli8107 yes! That is exactly what I was thinking about
Lolita is one of those books that I'm glad exists, but I have no intention to ever read it. I'm a delicate little flower and I'm pretty sure it would leave me feeling awful for days. Thank you for the video!
That is so valid. I was feeling like crap when making the video. The nasty feeling really sticks with you!
Fell in love with your channel recently, these look like such a great collection of books for October. I might take some inspiration for what I'm going to read next (and yes I really do need to get to Liu Cixin). My favourite Dostoyevsky is probably Brothers Karamazov if you haven't read that yet, but Prince Myshkin from The Idiot is definitely a great character.
@thJune-ze7dn thank you so much for your kind words! Liu Cixin is a great author, love him!! I am really excited to get into Russian Literature but I have been recommended to start slowly and not get into the juice straight away 😂
@@darkesthourreads One of the more accessible Russian novels I've read was called The Master and Margarita, it might be a good one to slowly ease you into Russian lit. It has a fast pace and is really entertaining to read, I hope you enjoy it if you pick it up.
@@thJune-ze7dn that sounds amazing! I will definitely put it on my list 🙏
I'm exhausted so I have to pause after the Icebreaker review, but... Can I just say, on the topic of your rant, that I fully agree with you and doing anything of that sort in front of non-consenting people(friends or otherwise) is not great. Let's be honest, consent is hot. And not consenting is, well, not.
100% agree! I have no qualms with what people enjoy doing, as long as it doesn't include me.
@19:42 so do you mean that men also face a lot of scrutingly and pressures to conform (to become a good husband and father; to be successful, for example), and that, because they are human and flawed, they will still always fall short of perfection... Huh- just like women, right? Dont do what so many F-ists are guilty of, which is completely losing (or let go of) your compassion for men (as people and as a gender) in your efforts to help increase compassion and understanding for women, both personally and in society, which you appear to conclude is entirely lacking. I would argue that both men and women only care about the lives, opinions, physical/emotional pain/ suffering and betterment of women, even to the deliberate detriment of men- both individually and on the whole. This is in large part due to culture and ideology, but it's also very deeply evolutionary- an aspect of this debate which is very often ignored but simply cannot be honestly denied. NOTE: Let's see if youtube deletes my comment again, cuz it doesnt allow criticism of certain F -ist ideologies. That ought to tell us something about who controls the discussion around this issue... (BTW, Im using "F-ist" cuz when i use the full term, my comment is deleted by youtube. The term i mean is "Femin***", not "Fasc***", in case it is not clear. Apparently, one is not permitted to critique a certain ideology that claims to fight for the rights of women. Makes me wonder, wtf...?) Take care 😀
I don't know what kind of fem*n*st movement you are looking at, but I can assure you that fem*n*sm is intersectional: we also fight for other minorities, and for others who are also oppressed, even the men that don't support us, that hate us. What you fail to understand is that women and other minorities have ALWAYS been at the front of the fight, caring for the mediocre men that are too comfortable in their own privilege to fight with us for the things that they are ALSO affected by. We are expected to take care of them: being their liberator from oppression, their teacher to learn basic human rights, and their therapist to cure their sick mindset. All of that, whilst still being their maids, their mothers, their s*x dolls. We are tired of trying to liberate the same people who oppress us. We are not therapists. We are not maids. If I can put the effort to make myself better and fight for the rights of the oppressed, so can they. I will not fight for someone who doesn't want to fight next to me. It's not my responsibility.
I think I could honestly listen to you talk all day, and I LOVE how passionate you are about your subjects. As far as tropes go, miscommunication is probably all the way up there - just fucking *talk* to each other, you know? And another one - he/she is absolutely the best at whatever they do, but the only way you know is that because the author is telling you directly, rather than showing you through their actions.
@tinyfishhobby3138 thank you so much, that is very kind! I absolutely agree, it is so much better to show the characters' skills to the readers, rather than tell them how good they are!
a trope i don;t like which is popular in asian novels is a main character transmigrating into a story and becoming a villain, for some reason the main characters are always so bland that I would rather read from the original character's pov, it's a shame because it's an interesting rremise
Oh that is interesting! I haven't seen a book with a trope like that before. Do you have any examples?
@@darkesthourreads this is a popular trope in chinese web novels, I've also seen some korean manhwua that has this trope(only judging from the title),often the trope is simply stated in the title, you can look it up on sites that translate chinese novels
Miscommunication is an ick I have with PEOPLE
@jonahthejedai4973 Oh my goodness YES! Tell me about it. For me, miscommunication tells me that you are letting your own pride and ego get in between the relationship
Video starts at 4:00
Okay I got baited so hard by the thumbnail, I had my pitchforks all ready to mount an impassioned defence of there being only one bed. Cool video, thank you! I share your appreciation for the god of light being evil, actually.
Goodness gracious no!!! The "Only One Bed" trope deserves all the love and respect! 🖤 It is one of the only tropes that makes me giggle and kick my feet like a high schooler 😂
Ooh, you just reminded me of my own least favourite trope: soulmarks! I seriously dislike the idea of love as some divinely-ordained thing, rather than a relationship that is fostered intentionally between two people. Some fanfic authors try to justify or deconstruct the trope, but I've yet to find an example that I thought actually succeeded.
@xujhan like: our souls are tied by destiny and we are meant to be together by divine interaction?
@@darkesthourreads Yes, exactly! And often extremely literal too, like: "everyone is born with a super magic tattoo, find the other person with the same super magic tattoo as yours and you'll fall in love immediately and be together forever." It's ghastly!
I am fully kinkshaming, getting freaky in front of your friends who have not consented is nasty🤢 Totally agree with It Ends with you being on the bottom. The writing does not live up to the expectations of a best seller writer.
This is exactly what I thought too❤
He has no hoes 🤣🤣🤣🤣 let’s gooo!!! So excited for this channel 😍😍😍
