Imran Khan - Modelling the Social Buffering Hypothesis in an Artificial Life Environment Keywords: social simulation, social buffering, stress response, affective bonds, oxytocin, social allostasis, embodied affect Abstract: Social individuals who form and maintain close social bonds are found to live longer, healthier lives. One hypothesised reason for this effect is that social support, media...

Barbora Hudcová - Classification of Complex Systems Based on Transients Keywords: cellular automata, complex systems, emergence, classification of dynamical systems Abstract: In order to develop systems capable of modeling artificial life, we need to identify which systems can produce complex behavior. We present a novel classification method applicable to any class of discrete space and time d...

Germán Kruszewski - Combinatory Chemistry: Towards a Simple Model of Emergent Evolution Paper available at: www.mitpressjournals.org/toc/isal/32 Abstract: Researching the conditions for the emergence of life -not necessarily as it is, but as it could be- is one of the main goals of Artificial Life. Answering this question requires a model that can first explain the emergence of evolvable units,...

That you are expressing things in a second language that I fail to understand in my first is breathtaking to me; my question is...would you go on Lex Fridman if asked? I'd be super interested to hear you answer his questions. 😊

I read a book once, a sci-fi novel, where new residences were planted and grew themselves. The main structure was made of a bone-like substance and within there was a circulatory system that served as plumbing, a nervous system that delivered energy for both the residence itself and assorted appliances, some of which were grown with the house. I won't go on but that author sure did. I can't remember who it was or what the name of the book was but from what I can tell that's more or less the goal here, isn't it? Create all sorts of stuff from biology. Amazing. Mr. Levin is certainly onto something here however cracking that code is ultimately necessary to advance so far as to be able to grow a building. He knows the code exists. He knows how it used. He knows how to copy and paste it and make biology use the pasted code. He doesn't yet understand the code, he can't read or write it but he's trying hard and I dare say he'll get there in the end. I sure hope so. We could grow self-healing spaceships that feed on sunlight. That's the sort of potential we're talking about here.

We need to change teaching and research in core philosophy of science so that instead of focusing on the nature of concepts, laws, technology, and reasoning processes related to producing, predicting and explaining configuration changes in known classes of spaces (e.g. involving only structures and processes studied by physicists) philosophers also learn to think about systems that can repeatedly generate new *types* of possibility (including new possible structures and new possible processes) and repeatedly produce mechanisms (construction kits) that produce novel structures, novel mechanisms, novel processes, and novel construction kits adding new layers of complexity (including repeatedly adding new types of construction kit for building construction kits). Mike Levin's online presentations should be core teaching materials for those teaching and studying philosophy of science. I have added a note on this to my web site on Evolved Construction-Kits and to chapter 2 of my online book (originally 1978) The Computer Revolution in Philosophy.

Amazing work Dr Levin, You are a future Nobel winner. After watching your Ted talk today I'm completely certain that you will win a Nobel for the discovery of the bioelectric layer directing cells and such. It's as important as the discovery of DNA itself.

Does CGP not need a population because of its high neutrality? Basically, a given parent has within it a large amount of inactive genes that act as a population's worth of possible phenotypes.

I might be wrong but I wonder if what here is called top-down is in some sense something like downward causation and not central based control over lower-level dynamics.
