VFR1200 - Last ride in 2024
I was gonna go camping, but didn't like the sites that were offering pitches, so I set off to ride a few lanes round Ellesmere Port, and then, on the spur of the moment I changed my mind and went looking for Manley Mere.

ZZR1200 Solo EU24 tour Part 2 : A girl an old man and miles of fantastic roads
Переглядів 61414 днів тому
Today I left Reims and headed off to Dole, just south of Dijon. I wasn't expecting much today, just a non motorway ride on 50mph, dead straight roads. And that was how it started out. However, south of Troyes, the riding improved dramatically.

A longer ride today to see how may miles per gallon I'm getting. Whitchurch was an easy place to get to if my sat nav switched itself off, and I like the Lockside Cafe. Last thing I did was fill up and calculate how many miles will I get from the VFR?
Should a motorcyclist get a French Motorway Tag
Переглядів 1,9 тис.21 день тому
13 years ago I rode across France in a hurry and paid motorway tolls as I went by debit card or cash. It was a problematic experience. On my rent tour, I wanted a fast transit to my first hotel at Reims, so I looked into getting an Emovis tag. Was it a good Idea? VFR1200 around Helsby - Swearing
Переглядів 24228 днів тому
I took the VFR out for a ride round Helsby hill. On the one hand, I wanted to see if I had sorted some of the camera issues I had on my last ride. On the other, I was looking to get a picture in a laybye overlooking the Wirral, but it was full of cars. So I went to Delamere forest instead. There are a few seconds of swearing, for once, it wasn't gratuitous.
VFR1200 Trying not to mark the paintwork
Переглядів 472Місяць тому
Normally I'd just stick camera mounts all over the bike, but the paintwork on the Honda is pristine and I don't want to mark it at all if I can avoid it. So, I'm trying out suction mounts amongst other things. I had a few minutes to spare so I got out for a ride round some lanes, and to see how these suction mounts work out with stabilised cameras.

NB24 Part 4 - The Winking Man back to New Broom site

The plan was to skirt Alton Towers, however, there was a call for an early arrival back at the site. I took all the way points out and put us all at the mercy of my Satnav. It was a good ride, and the rain had stopped.. and we were back in time for a few early beers and food, a bonus for sure.

    I live in France and I have never used the Peage on the Moto (at last count, more than 250,000 km on French roads). On a recent trip to the UK from Paris, I used the back roads to Calais (and back). Yes, it took about an hour-ish longer each way but was so much better than the boring Autoroute. I understand that you may want to "munch the miles", but why? Motos are so much better on the back roads even on my heavy tourer. It's easy to find supermarkets (fuel isn't a problem) and cafes are plentiful (closed on a Sunday mind). Plan ahead with Google Maps and your SatNag and you'll find that French country roads are a (deleted) dream to ride.

    Had 2012 Vfr1200f , have a 2014 'f' ,both from new, generally get 46 to 50mpg and fill up around 170/180mls. Have pushed it to 205. If bike is gunned mpg will drop to mid 30s. have found once they're over 15000mls the mpg improves. Mine has around 25k on it, now 'run in'. Great engine and a fast, comfortable bike!

      Thanks. My VFR hasn't done 13k miles yet, so it's good ter hear it'll do better shortly. I was using 3rd gear a lot on this ride, so could probably do better already. 170 miles on a tankful is pretty normal as far as I can see. Thanks for watching. 👍

    I looked at one of these then bought a BMW K1300S instead. I'm glad I did! 46-50mpg and 180-200 miles between fill ups made touring about visiting places other than petrol stations.

      I think the only downside is the fuel consumption up to now. I've toured on worse, an I have a habit of filling up every hundred miles or so anyway. Nevertheless, I'd agree on some tours it might be an issue. 👍👍 Thanks for watching.

    UA-camr "graham vfr" gets about 44 mpg. Why is it that Honda make great sports touring bikes like the vfr 1200 and the Pan European then discontinue them?

    • @rayjones4115

      I think the VFR was discontinued cos it couldn't meet new emissions regulations.. 🤔🤔

    • @blackk1UK
      @blackk1UK 15 днів тому

      I think it was discontinued because it didn't sell! A sports tourer that needs petrol every 130-150 miles is really not very good at the tourer bit. It's then too heavy as a Sunday afternoon blast sports bike that doesn't need the range. It needed another 40+ miles on its tank range or 40kg less weight.

    I think you will get more mpg on a run. Large capacity bikes do not always give better mpg 'taking it easy'. My R1150RT would give low 50s taking it easy around the lanes, but would give 60 mpg on a run at 60 - 70 mph.

    On a related topic. A few years ago I used to drive through France fairly regularly to go to and from my job in Munich. I used to pay the tolls with my debit card but at least a half a dozen times SANEF took the payments out twice ! Once on the day I travelled, and then a second time a couple of weeks later when I had not travelled there at all ! It was impossible to correct this error and as it was only about €50 or so I initially used to live with it. However on about the 6th time it happened I then used to only pay with cash at the toll booths ! Takes a bit longer but at least you don't get ripped off !

      Technically, without a ticket, I would have had a penalty to pay. As it happens, It HAD read my tag, and it did so at the other end too... so I didn't get a penalty. Until this moment however, I didn't know what was going to happen. My advice, that the tag should go in the tank bag is based on this experience, and is entirely consistent with it. .

    • @rayjones4115

      The day before, my tag didn't work, so I threw it in my tank bag in disgust. On the second day, I went to a ticket lane cos I didn't expect the tag to work, and I pulled up to press and get a ticket. The barrier lifted, and I rode through without a ticket in my hand. But I had guessed it had read my tag through my tank bag. Nevertheless, I felt vulnerable without the ticket. 👍👍

    Surely the better question is, Should a motorcyclist ever use a motorway in France? The answer to that question is easy and it’s, no. I live in France, I tour extensively, I have had the motorcycle I tour on for just over three years now and it has never been on a motorway. Not once, never. Riding the autoroutes through France is not only an expense it’s also a wasted opportunity. Please don’t tell me that sometimes you have to use the autoroute because you don’t, it’s a choice. There are always options, most are better options and some are quicker. The question you are asking is a non question but I suppose those motorcyclists who opt for the monotonous boredom of motorway travel probably can’t be arsed to go to the trouble of getting a bank card out of their wallet either.

    • @bobbluesbarker
      @bobbluesbarker 23 дні тому

      @davidmatthews3093 - just because you don't want to use the autoroute doesn't mean that no one else should either! Others may have good reason to use them on the bike and don't want to be faffing around at the toll barriers trying to use their card. If I want to get across to Montpellier from where I live quickly, then I'll jump onto the A9 and use my tag to save the fumbling around taking the ticket and stashing it when I enter the autoroute and then retrieving it and my bank card when I get to the other end. It works well for me on these occasions.

  • @bobbluesbarker
    @bobbluesbarker 23 дні тому

    I live in France and have a Bip'n'Go tag in both our cars for the tolls. I've got an armband holder for use on the bike if I need to get somewhere quickly by motorway on it. So, I just take the tag out of one of the cars and pop it into the armband when needed. I rarely use the motorways on the bike, but it's nice to have the option if the need arises. More motorways are having the toll barriers removed, so there's no option to pay on the move, so to speak, anymore, so toll tags will almost become a requirement in the future.

    I always have an E movis tag. Never had a problem. I travel in France quite a bit, and if you want to cover distance efficiently, you have to use the motorways. Obviously you miss out on some stuff, but it gives you more time at your destination, and you’re guaranteed access to fuel and coffee enroute. In bad weather,you always have somewhere to stop and dry off. But using the motorway system is a trade off. I live in France and no way i would get one fpr two reasons,one is the autoroute is to expensive as is the fuel and you are missing so much traveling on the minor roads.

      @@davidmatthews3093 That would depend on the purpose of the trip. Of course I wish to enjoy it, but if the reason for going is to get to Italy, then why spend perhaps days longer dawdling around France? In fact, I've been in the exact situation you describe on my first bike tour abroad. Our planned route once across was, as you say, basically avoiding autoroutes at all costs. Le Havre, Le Mans, east up the Loire Valley, then down and across ending up near Grasse. The return was similar, though we did have to hit the autoroute once for reasons I now forget. We were at the docks in Southampton, waiting to board the outbound ferry with our BMW R90/6 and got talking to another couple on a Honda CX500. Their plan was to immediately jump on the autoroute/s and be in Rome asap. I can't recall for sure now but think they said either that night or the following one. That wouldn't be possible via normal roads. This time, there are a couple of places I want to visit on the way, but the main reason for the specific trip I have in mind is to visit places in Italy my late Dad was as an escaped WW2 PoW. Basically, he walked south from near Macerata and met the advancing Allied lines just south of Chieti. THAT is the reason for that trip - the part that will have special personal resonance - France just happens to be between here and there! He was also a biker (he was a Despatch Rider in North Africa) - "watch out for unexploded ordnance!") and actually rode down there himself after the War to visit the family who, though it was contrary to the martial law in force at the time, sheltered and fed him for several weeks. I'd love to know - and follow - the exact route he took to get there, but it was just one of those things we never got to talk about. Safe and enjoyable riding, wherever you go! 🙂

      @richardstewart6900 Sounds like a great reason for the trip. I don't know if you know the family's name, so you could see if they have any relatives. I bet they'd love to meet you. Have a safe trip. 👍

    Glad to see you are out there enjoying that lovely bike Ray. When I bought the RT new in 2020 with my pension pot, I fitted a Tony James paint protection film kit. It was quite expensive at £200 but it covers every part of the bike including panniers and top box. It was also quite easy to do so long as you keep things wet....plenty of youtube videos covering it. I have done over 26000miles now and there isn't a mark on any of the paintwork. I have just done the same to the Hayabusa as I am keeping it as well now...can't recommend the stuff enough. Cheers Dave
