Don't forget - POTA is supposed to be fun
Переглядів 150Рік тому
Recorded on May 29, 2023 at the Big Bone Lick State Historic Site Big Bone, KY park K-3779 It was such a beautiful day I couldn't resist going to the park to play a little radio. However, I let the competition part of POTA take over and try to ruin the day. While attending the Dayton/Xenia Hamvention I went to a POTA session. One of the important take aways from the session was "HAVE FUN!" Than...
One POTA adventure cancelled, but another one takes its place!

Recorded on May 16, 2023 at Stonelick State park in Ohio. Park number K-1993. I was scheduled to go to Big Bone Lick State Historic Site for a POTA activation with KY4DH (Dixie Heights High School Amateur Radio Club) but due to the weather that was cancelled. I had already taken the day off so I figured "Let's do a different park!" The weather and the mowing crew threw me some curve balls on th...

They still call it Dayton Hamvention. At least on their tees and sweatshirts. It was pouring down rain when we got there around 8:30. Turned the drive lanes into a mud pit so bad that even in 4 wheel drive my truck got stuck and had to be towed out. They even have a service their for that! Saturday turned into a beautiful day.
How do you power it all??
Luckily I only run my radio and my tuner via my 20ah battery. It lasts about two hours if I run around 50 - 60 watts. Since then I have upgraded to a 40ah battery. It can go two hours + at high power and still have more to go!
We shall
I should try that park. I'm in Bright, Indiana not far away.
It’s not bad. Make sure to bring along a table and a chair. That is, unless you are going to operate out of a vehicle. It was SUPER quiet the day I was there. As in no vehicle traffic.
Man, you hang out with some shady characters! 😂 73, KY4TS
Yeah I know but it wasn’t TOO bad.
Nice activation!
Wow! Thank you!! Coming from a pro like yourself that makes me feel really good! Thank you again!!
💯🎸🎙👍
Thank you!
Great job !!! DE W2MGF BRONX NY
Thanks. The kids, and the older guys to some extent, did a great job!
Matt, where did you get the stack boxes, you videos are very helpful, for newer hams.
I got those from Sams club. However, I haven’t seen them there since I bought them. I want to say they were about $80.
@@theAVERAGEham Thanks I looked at Harbor Freight they have a set. I was able to activate East Fork State Park K-1948, last Saturday, 8/19. At some point I will get good enough to video at few contacts.
Good stuff dude! 73, KY4TS
Thank you sir!
I'm sure this would be very interesting if only someone had the forethought to explain what was going on. A few old men wandering around a field with wires and a kid talking obscure techno babble does not make for good viewing. Sorry guys but I've got to call this one a fail.
I'm sorry that I didn't explain it more. Parks on the Air is an amateur radio activity. It gives the operators the chance to get outside and practice making contacts using portable equipment. I like to call it radio fishing. You can find more information about Parks on the Air by visiting their website. parksontheair.com/
cool
Thanks!

Tom is the Pota King around these parts!
You'll get no argument from me!!
👍
Thank you!
I wasn’t in the video but I did make a QSO with you that day.Maybe next time 73,KD2WBX
Oh, sorry I didn't get you in the video. I have a bad habit of turning the camera off to do something, then having a flurry of QSOs. It was probably during one of my camera breaks. Hopefully I'll get better at this and be able to show more QSOs. Thanks for being out there that day!
Matt, Hi I am a fellow Northern KY HAM - KQ4AUD, I am going to try my first POTA activation, I have been a hunter for some time. I was going to try Kincaid Lake SP, any advice on where in the park to set-up? Thanks & 73.
Hello! I’ve activated Kincaid twice. Once down by the pool/lake, and the other time at a picnic table near the lake. There’s a little pull off/parking spot right off the road. The pull off area was really nice as it was close enough to the lake that I could play radio and see the fish jumping! I personally like to use a picnic table. It makes the setup, my opinion, a little easier. Hope that helps.
Nice interview Matt and Jack!
Thanks! Jack did all of the hard work. I just stood there.....mostly.
nice :-)
Thank you!
I never heard myself on the radio before. ANyway, thanks for the P2P. W0STO
You're welcome! Maybe we will chat again the next time I get to play radio in the park.
Thanks for the vid of my check in, lets me know how I sound. N0VTY
You are welcome! Thanks for checking out the video!
I need a job where I can do radio whenever I want!
I agree! I told my wife I wanted to retire and play radio but she said I had another 14 years to go!! Sheesh!
Excellent Activation and nice Setup.I sold my LDG-AT7000 and got me an LDG-AT100ProII instead to be able to simultaneiously running Antenna Comparison. Keep your fantastic Job. 73 de Uncle Günter 💯👌🙋♂
Thanks! I’ll have to look into that tuner.
Wow, you sure went through a lot to get that activation, kudo's to you. I probably wouldn't have set up in the rain. I can't wait to go on my 2nd park trip. 73!
Yeah, setting up in the rain is always a task but I really wanted to run that day. It was the call of the POTA. I probably won’t be looking to setup in the rain again for a while.
Nice POTA video I just tested my set-up in the backyard next step is to hit a park, shooting for East Fork Lake in Ohio. K-1948
Thank you! I’ve only activated East Fork once. I setup near the boat ramp right by the dam. It wasn’t bad at all. I’ll keep an EAR out for you.
Great job Matt, I have hunted at Adair, and Mullins but did not know of ham radio shows being done at parks. Keep making videos.
Thanks buddy! I learned it all from you!!
Looks great. 💯👌🙋♂
Thanks!
Hope to make contact with you when I get my DX Commander build. 73 KC1PDW
Sounds good! I’ll listen for you!
Pretty cool, I am trying to get started. I have an IC-718 (it's the only radio I have) so I will be using it. I just got my small bioenno 12/12 and I made a EFHW 40-10 which I plan to try first.
While I used my WRC on this trip, I think the EFHW does a fantastic job. Thanks for watching!
The 718 is a good solid rig. Run that battery at 35-45 watts and you work for several hours. You’ll only be down about 1 S unit from 100 watts. 73, KY4TS
great job 73 from kb2uew
Thank you!
I miss being a ham. Pretty sure I am going t get another Technician license after this. I used to be KB2RVA a couple decades ago when I was in Civil Air Patrol. After learning about RF witchcraft a bit from the USAF, I became an actual tech for a local wireless ISP. Super aewsome brother, thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
Great job with the video. I feel like this shows off what ham radio operating is perfectly.
Thanks! Any time you want to come along let me know!
Nice job Matt! Great explanation and intro to POTA.
Thank you!
