Wait, hold on a sec. You said you got it for free..thats not true. Before you "purchased" the item, you had 30602. After you defeated the mimic, you only had 24820 left, even after picking up the new item...so yeah it wasn't free
It is free sometimes. Specifically if the mimic appeared when you bought a food item, since it drops 2 of that food item after killed, so you get a buy 1 get 1 free deal.

The first time I encountered a mimic, I chose flight instead. I tried running away, but the mimic just catch up with his long jump, so I went with the teleport station.

A monster in the bank. It hides at one of the Shopkeeper sites in the bank(but not necessarily always), and only appears if you specifically end up purchasing an item from the shopkeeper that hides the mimic. It then absorbs the item you just bought and attacks you(with a variety of attacks based on the type of item you just bought). Once defeated, it will either: 1) Drop a +2 level upgraded item if its a weapon, shield, power, trap, pet Or any upgradable items you bought, or 2 of any food item you bought(so 2 flasks, 2 chicken). They are tricky to handle, but well worth the risk if the bank spawns at later biome levels simply because of the +2 upgrade on items.

you can equip a legendary and a normal item at the same time, so since he had a legendary owl he could use another owl aswell, you can do some pretty busted synergies like double serenade, double throwing knives and stuff like that

It’s relative low chance to get it and have it’s unique blueprint drop so don’t be afraid to buy things and fight it :)
