Texas Power Paddle safety hack.
Переглядів 613 місяці тому
The Texas Power Paddle units have a flaw, which in my opinion is careless, and potentially fatal. The rudder mounted motors can make for abrupt and unexpected turns that can easily tip a distracted boater, but even the most experienced kayaker is prepared for the unexpected. Even at it's slower speed, if you fall off your kayak you WILL see it sail away without you. Here is a simple and inexpen...

Do it yourself and save a boatload. C'mon Texas Power Paddle, be reasonable. Here's a link to the motor: bluerobotics.com/store/thrusters/t100-t200-thrusters/m200-motor/

I have had a bixpy motor for 4 years . Their service department is great. My first motor went out after two years l sent to them and they replaced it with a new J2 motor for 1 hundred and 29 dollars. Bixpy is a great company said in most cases they can repair them at a reasonable cost. I highly recommend them ,they even sent me shipping labels to send it to them.
Anyone have a link for a speed controller?
any cracks in the Hobie yet??
No cracks, but I don't use a scupper cart which I think is where most cracks appear. I use a standard kayak cart or my trailer, eliminating that stress on the hull.
your dealer is 100% correct. The exact thing just happened to me. I stupidly tightened the back idler cable because the drums (elephant ears) were very loose but then it pulled up that back sprocket and the bearings were exposed. What happens is that idler cable stretches over time and instead of tightening it you should replace instead.
Thanks to your videos, I just built my own "TPP" using parts from BlueRobotics but Id like to add a kill switch. Do you have a link? Thx
I'd REALLY love to see your build! Can you share a video? As for the kill switch, it was an Amazon purchase.
I’m glad, I came across this. I just purchased it and cost me almost $1700. I might have to return it right away. I was thinking it is American built motor.
Paying a $1000 more for rod holders and mounts is crazy. The 5yr drive warranty alone is worth it.
Agreed. Something else I noticed... EVERY time I go out in the Outback, I come home with water in the hull. Not a lot, but maybe half to one gallon or so. That's "common" in the outback, while the Old Town is bone dry. So far it hasn't been a real problem, but considering my batteries and the occasional wilderness trip with gear in the hull, it's another tick in the box for an Outback win.
Can't fault TPP for needing to make a profit as they have to cover a lot of cost for engineering, product research, testing, support, warranty, etc. That said, I thank you for this discovery. I plan to build a clone of the TPP system from scratch.
Just pick up yak attacks rail part for your old town , and pick up hobies circle hole cover to access your back hatch area to screw and mount the rails with nuts and screws! Just a thought. It’s definitely possible to take your old town out crabbing withe traps to mount down.
With the location of the transducer on the Old Town does side imaging work. I know that is one of the reasons for the Hobie Transducer placement to allow it to be below the hull so SI can work.
No problem.
I've been through 3 rotors, all have gotten corroded and the motor froze. I have been able to sand down the corrosion and seems to work. I also am going to purpose a rotor from Blue Robotics. Its 1/3 of the price TPP want me to pay
You could’ve just bought the one that’s meant for the transducer plate for your outback 🤓 they didn’t do anything wrong, you just ordered the wrong version lmao
There would be zero difference in performance, and even less of a chance of clearing an obstruction. Also, you lose the transducer location.
Merci pour la comparaison exhaustive et argumenté. Je cherchais une alternative au Outback et par rapport à ma future utilisation le Old Town me paraît être un bon challenger !
Oui.c'est vrais
A tip for getting the seat on easily is silicone spray on the part that clamps on. Makes it super super easy
The Center Pin will wear out and bearings will if its too loose. Also the stock grease is not very good. Get really good Marine grease and redo the main pin, roller and the two pins by the chain. It will run much smoother. Wash with fresh water with good pressure to get rid of sand and debris.
I have 3 TPP gen1's they all came with a cut off switch and they were one of the first ones sold. not sure how yours isn't there. But I do want to thank you for the blue robotics info it has really helped as TPP prices are crazy. I got a new unit for $200 and installing it now. The old motors it looks like the rotor is the problem the coating on the inside is missing in spots and the magnets start to rust then seize up the unit. I'll be buying a new rotor to see if I can repair this one. I have always rinsed and used the right lube after each use, but I can see now that isn't enough. My suggestion now is a 5 gallon bucket of fresh water and let the motor run slowly to completely flush the system then drain a lube after each use. after finding the t200 info I found on thingiverse a 3d print for both the prop and the weed guard trying those as I type but you have to look it up t200 not TPP I'm still looking for the other items if anyone has info on the controller, cable ends, or motor mounts
Could I use a 12v 60ah Lifepo battery?
Does anyone know why I keep shearing off my chain cables? Is there some tension or rotational problem I am doing when I replace them?
I have Lynx. Do you think the little yellow motor is better than the remora? Is the yellow one faster
How has your new yellow weedless motor been doing? Does it get weeds in it?
It's certainly better than the thruster. The new system is an improvement, but I still had to hack it... Like adding a kill switch to it. Also, this is NOT for salt conditions.
@@buildingcodepro9237 can you possibly make a video on how to add a kill switch?
Great comparison video! It would be great to see the setup / mods on the Revo kayak.
Great video. I wouldn’t spend a dime on this product especially at over $1500 bucks. They’re CRAZY
What are the end connections called that plug into the battery? I’m needing to order one of those
The Old Town is heavier…
It is, but not with the drive removed. And either way, the old town is easier to maneuver on the ground without damage where the hobie rudder is extremely vulnerable. Also the little rope on the hobie handle wears out. I think the ground handling definitely goes to the old town, hands down. Remember, I own and use both, on the same vehicle and the exact same locations and conditions, both ramps and long foot paths on kayak carts.
My reply is true and correct, the Old Town is heavier. I don’t know the reason for the rest of your reply
having to pull a chain in order to reverse is pretty silly especially if u are fighting a fish or something
Do you have a link for the speed controller?
Do you think I can add that small yellow motor to the rudder on my Lynx or is it too heavy? Also where would I get the speed knob?
Well I was going to bite the bullet and buy 2 remora’s for my 2 Lynx but sounds like I’m better off taking my 18v drill and adding a drill propeller. 😂
Agreed.
Too expensive for that kind build..better newportvessel more powerful..
Agreed. It is discreet though, which may get one by any restrictions. Also, it being on the rudder means the steering is easy and very responsive. I don't know about the newport
What a cry baby, boo hoo, you should buy a 60,000 boat
Thank you for making us aware of options. Their "Blue Boat" uses two of these motors so I'm curious what only one will do on a kayak.
About 3.5 to 4 mph on the hobie outback
Epic thanks. I’m looking to beach launch a kayak and it seems the old town is a better option. Simpler and lighter. Better handles.
Are you Juan? I thought that was Gus's PDL😊
I own one also
How did that crack form on the back of that old town?
What crack?
whats the speed of this gen 3
Too many factors determine speed, like type of kayak, current etc. It's about as fast as using the pedals. A little faster than trolling speed
awesome thanks for responding, i am looking at the blue robotics stuff and realized i can just buy the modified rudder from tpp for $99 and the rest i can build from the bluerobotics website, is there anything else i would need from tpp besides the ridder mod?
I dont think it can do as fast as bigger throlling motor like newport vessel..now i m using nk300..it is more fun..everything there in term of speed
About 3 to 4 mph tops
The ONLY advantage I see in the Hobie is the drive when you’re in weeds and since I don’t fish much in weeds it’s irrelevant. And $30 worth of rails you can put them everywhere on the Old Town
Not questioning you but my own experience was better. Mine came with a red kill switch with coiled cable, don't know why yours doesn't. Sorry you had bad experience .I had no trouble getting answer within a day from either the owner or customer service. Have had one for 2 years on my Outback use it in Texas marsh twice week. No problems. Every few months you gotta take appart and clean motor but do maintenance on my outboard boat too. Company states : "On full throttle 120 minutes, low throttle or combine w pedaling, average user gets 6-8 hours". So do not claim all day. I usually go out 4-5 hours use it mid to full and still have 45% battery. Do not work for them and paid retail. If you lube use marine grade lithium grease. WD40 is good for door hinges but has rusted some of mine. They have new model motor for heavy weed areas. Hope you find a system that works for you. Friend has new Old Town Epedal 132 and an Autopilot 120 he loves.
I own a Native pdl chinese clone. It is been 5 years of harcore use, camping and offshore fishing, out of the box, not so good, but with some mods, it is a beast. I did the ("car engine) oil convertion"on the pedal drive, it is a game changer if you are able to do it on the old town, highly recommend you. O got a "weed guard" that a guy 3D printed in Australia, and it solved the problem with the fishing lines and everything else snags in between the propeller. I does wrap aroung the propeller, but it is easy to clear out. I tried a hobbie once and it is great, but personally I Ipreffer the circle motion of the pedal drive, than the hobbie straight pushes. I think it is a deal breaker that hobbie hulls has that many crack reports on the hull, that freaks me out, cause it is a very expensive kayak, and hull toughness is one the first things you need. I mean a have a chinese Yak that is well abused for years... no hull issues whatsoever.
Seems like it would be hard to put a stern mounted motor on the PDL with that flip up rudder back there. I need to find some examples. I spend a lot more time in shallow water rivers though so Hobie wins for me.
Many good examples on UA-cam showing Newport and Bixpy installs with no holes drilled.
Hi. I found your channel by watching your kayak comparison and you commented that your an inspector. I’m a home inspector in Austin. I was wondering what crawlspace bot you are using? I need to get one but they’re so freaking expensive. Also, are you a commercial inspector?
Hello! Yes, I do comercial as well. I use the BIG crawler that Scot Baker made. North of $3000, it was VERY expensive, but I own two of them of that tells you anything about how invaluable this tool is for me.
@@buildingcodepro9237 Gotcha…I’ve spoken to Scott several times about his bot. I should just bite the bullet and get one. Although, he told me a few months ago he wasn’t selling them right now due to a part shortage or something like that. I’m guessing that if you bought 2 of them from him, that you would recommend him and his bots?
lol lame that outback will out do any other yak other then a pro angler lol
Lame, I own and fish both. You?
Thank you! Thank you! Ive been looking at either the Texas or the Bixby and have not bought either because of the feaar of weed clogs. I'm on Lake Guntersville and Wilson - both high density weeds. Good for bass, bad for the Texas Power Paddle given your experience. Best real-world assessement I've seen. Will be interested in their response or corrective actions!
They have not responded other than to ask if I made the video. They're playing ostrich. Zero customer support... Do me a favor, please share this video on any kayaking forum you belong to. Help me get the word out!
....that motor looks like its for toy boats, not big enough for Kayaks...and they're pricey
If I pay premium, I expect either a SUPERB product, or OUTSTANDING customer service. They have it all backwards.
First of all let me say thank you for taking the time to put together this video and offer viewers and prospective Texas Power Paddle customers an independent and unbiased review of their products and service. The only other reviews on UA-cam are from the TPP channel and are obviously sponsored and thus biased. I have the same boat (Hobie Outback 2022) and have been considering the TPP system for a while now. The only difference being, I was considering the Remora system that fits into the transducer space. I even went as far as contacting the company (as you said, you never get a live person) about a demo of the system. Someone did return my call and left a message saying that their demonstration program was no longer available. So if you go to their website, they actually still advertise a demonstration program which doesn't even exist! The way I look at it, I wouldn't buy a car, a boat, a motorcycle or anything else of any value, without trying it out or test driving it first. That was a red flag for me immediately. After listening to your very valid and troubling concerns, I believe I will just continue to look for a different system, or possibly even put one together myself. Any company that can't stand behind their product or service shouldn't even be considered.
Incidentally, the system has NO KILL SWITCH. If you manage to fall off your kayak you'll see it sail away into the sunset. Oh, and after the discount, the replacement motor comes to $609!!! WTF?!
This IS the exact motor and propeller the unit I have uses: VGEBY 2838 5000KV Waterproof Thruster with 60mm Propeller RC Underwater Thruster (Reverse) a.co/d/6bQBhxQ
It's a design fault as far as I see. I and my mates had same issue and hence we have replaced carbon pin bearing with ceramic ball bearing and works like charm. They should sell sprocket only not the entire assembly.
Yes! You hit all the pet peeves of mine with the Outback. That friggin' seat is a PITA indeed. I do love the rails and molded in places in the Outback but would figure it out with the Old Town. Thanks for the drive comparison too. Great info that has helped me decide to stow the Outback and try the Old town.
Good review! I have the Outback and often fish on rivers around me. The rudder got knocked loose the other day on a float as I came over a shallow ledge. It wouldn't have happened if I could have retracted that rudder the entire way up on to the boat. One question; how does the peddle drive on the Old Town compare to the Hobie peddle drive as far as feel and smoothness? I had a Bite PDL by Jackson and after I got in the Hobie, the Jackson felt like a Flintstone car compared to the smooth Hobie drive. Your thoughts on the pedal drive comparison?
Yes the pdl causes more drag on the water when u stop pedaling compared to the hobie that keeps gliding when you stop pedaling.
