027(EP34) Cities In Dust: Siouxsie & the Banshees, International Centre, Toronto, Canada, July 10/84
After years of devoted fandom, I finally get to see the one and only Siouxsie Sioux and her plucky Banshees in a cavernous-but wonderfully air conditioned-venue on Toronto’s outskirts.
I’d been following Ms. Sioux since the early days of punk rock reporting in the UK press, and fell in love with their debut 45, “Hong Kong Garden” in 1978. It was a UK smash hit and remains one of my favourite singles of the ‘70s.
I was a Banshees nut from then on, and when I finally got to see them live in 1984, I was pretty damned stoked.
HOWEVER ………. this gig is Another in an ongoing sub-thread in the mylifeinconcert.com series that could be called Concert Disasters, with said Disaster happening before, during, or after the show-OR during all 3, for those extra-lucky occasions.
Frequently they involve some of the cheap and old cars I was driving in the 80s malfunctioning in some way. And this is the first of those Car Nightmare EPs.
Phil Robinson will also be back again to detail his memories of the show. We each went down with other people with meant Phil was spared the “journey” that the other 3 of us went through.
There will also be a new blog entry for this show.
So what the hell happened with this one? Tune in to find out and hear all about leg casts, “rumours of a gig,” smoking fuses, the little Honda that couldn’t … and cities in dust.
Tune in (or read the blog entry for) Epsiode 34, Concert no. 026. Cities In Dust: Siouxsie & the Banshees with Images in Vogue, the International Centre, Toronto, Ontario, July 10, 1984.
NEXT ON STAGE: I’ll be selecting and looking back on my favourite London, Ontario shows that I’ve seen through the years, as well as those I’ve missed that I would most like to have seen.

Following that will be an episode looking at two concerts by The Smiths. Stay tuned for EP 36 I Know It’s Over: The Smiths with Billy Bragg, Kingswood Music Theatre, Canada’s Wonderland, Vaughan, Ontario, June 9, 1985; and with Phranc, Centennial Hall, London, Ontario, July 30, 1986.

Birmingham UK’s reggae outfit UB40 made two trips to London, Ontario, in the mid-80s, playing to a packed and joyous Centennial Hall on March 7, 1984, and then returning a year later almost to the week, to pack out Alumni Hall on the Western University campus on March 14, 1985. The first show came on the heels of their international breakthrough with the “Red Red Wine” single and its accompanyi...

The Stray Cats arrived to rock London, Ontario in 1983 at the peak of their fame. With this episode, I’ve once again jumped backwards in my story, just not as far back as that cabaret show I saw with my parents in the UK in 1977 that was the focus on EP 31, Mum’s the Word. This time, I jump back to March 26, 1983, when the Stray Cats rocked Alumni Hall here in London, Ontario. Technically this ...

It featured Susan Maughan, Pam Ayers, the Famous People Players, possibly Tessie O’Shea, and others. The cabaret took place between my first (Roxy Music at the London Arena, February 8, 1975) and second (Bob Seger at the London Gardens on May 19, 1978) official concerts. M...

They played there in the summer of 1995 but I was not at the gig. I wasn't keen on Radiohead's debut album and had not yet heard their brand new album, The Bends, so I did not go. I heard and fell in love with The Bends in early 1996 and kicked myself for not having gone to the CTO gig. I did see them at Centennial Hall in 1997, though.

wow! What a great podcast. I found you through a Stiv Bators interview and next thing I came across is OMD. And 1982 was a very important and successful year for them, at the peak of their success in Europe but still underground at the other side of Atlantic but with a dedicated cult following. I also remember vividly URGH a music war, it was played in the cinemas in Greece where I'm from. OMD's first four albums are incredible. What a brilliant memory to have! No matter the freezing cold I wish I could travel back in time and be on the cue waiting in frozen Canada to see them (after I waved them earlier at a restaurant)!!! OMD live up until 1983 were pure magic. So passionate with an incredible set.

Thanks for listening and I'm glad you enjoyed it so much. First off, I LOVE URGH! A Music War. I first had the album but later dubbed a copy of the film in the mid-80s. That VHS cassette got played so much that it eventually wore out. Happy to have a DVD version now. And yes, 1982 was a big year for OMD. Canada is a bit different from the States, and a lot of those British and New Wave bands were much more popular up here than down there. A&M became their first hit album here and it was just starting its chart ascent at the time of the show. I still love those early albums but the debut remains my favourite.

Very hot day at CNE that summer. Floors were general admission (standing). Spoons were great as were FOS. Funny how Gordon Deppe (Guitarist/vocalist for Spoons now plays guitar with FOS as they tour currently). However, Talking Heads were amazing as were the Police. 1982 was a great year for UK New Wave. Concert Hall on Yonge Street (North of Bloor) was the centre for many of these. Squeeze, OMD, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran (twice [July at Concert Hall and August opening for Blondie] at CNE), The Jam, The Beat, ABC, Spandau Ballet, Thompson Twins, etc. The Beat was there... Also played Concert Hall in December of 1982 and Kingswood Theatre (Canada's Wonderland) in April 1983. I don't believe Joan Jett finished her entire set. The roadies threatened to cancel the show but when she came out, she got pelted all over again.

I’ve listened to about 20 episodes so far. I love hearing about the shows, but I especially like the many references to London, Ontario in the 80’s. You are bringing up so many places that I haven’t thought about in years. I used to go to teen dances at the Polish Hall all the time. I had no idea there were punk shows there. I also read the book, Murder City. Great book! Fun fact; I lived a few doors down from an escaped serial killer in London in the 80’s. Anyways, thanks for the memories and I look forward to future episodes. Especially the Smiths, because I was at that show. My memories of the show are vague, but I remember what led up to the show like it was yesterday.

@@mylifeinconcert My pre-concert story isn’t very interesting. I remember it was a weekday because I was working at a summer day camp earlier that day. One of the popular kids from my high school working at the camp asked me if I wanted to come to the Smiths concert that night and I said, sure. I gave him $20 for the ticket then he thanked me for buying the ticket because he couldn’t go to the show. So, here I was with a ticket to see the Smiths by myself. I thought he was inviting me to the show with all the popular kids lol…. I remember stressing all day about going to the show by myself. I have never gone to a concert by myself before or after. The only things I seem to remember is that there was a fifth member of the Smiths (Craig Gannon) and it was mentioned that it was his birthday. I also remembered that they didn’t sound that impressive. I wish I could remember more. I’m looking forward to hearing what your interpretation of the gig was. Maybe it will unlock some memories. Oh, on a side note. I did here of several sightings of Morrissey walking in the park wearing a red cardigan. There was also a girl from my high school that claimed to have hung out with Andy Rourke (RIP) and Mike Joyce.

Also, it’s nice hearing y’all mention the old bars and clubs around London. I moved away over 25 years ago and I haven’t heard the names Mingles or Call the Office in years. Thanks again for these wonderful memories of yours.

This is such a great podcast. I am binge listening all weekend. Thank you for sharing your memories with us. This is bringing back so many memories from my youth in London. Did you happen to go to the Smiths or the Cult/Guns an’ Roses concerts?

I thought I recognized your voice from CHRW. I listened to that radio station throughout the 80’s

Re the Moog: I believe that Micky Dolenz was one of the first---- if not THE, first---people in rock music to buy and play a Moog on songs for his band (The Monkees). I recall he first heard the Moog's use in an old SF film from the mid-50's that he liked, called FORBIDDEN PLANET and fell in love with it.

I often get the feeling, from history's "muses", of how much they remind me of unfinished symphonies and long-lost classic silent films from which just enough salvaged stills remain to make you wonder What wonders may have been
